KM Malta Airlines compensation calculator: check your claim
Short answer: a reliable KM Malta Airlines compensation calculation needs six inputs: operating carrier, travel direction, booking structure, disruption type, actual final arrival and cause. If EU261 applies, a qualifying case produces a standard band of EUR 250, EUR 400 or EUR 600 per passenger. The calculator result is an initial classification, not proof that the airline must pay.

Check your case in the form
Enter your route, date and type of disruption. We will check whether your case qualifies for a claim under EU 261/2004 or UK261.
What happened to your flight?
Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.
Choose the situation that applies to your flight:
KM Malta Airlines Limited is an EU carrier that began operations on 31 March 2024. Do not enter a legacy Air Malta journey or a flight operated by Malta Air, Wizz Air Malta or a codeshare partner as if KM necessarily performed it.
This method was checked against current sources on 13 August 2026. The EU reform adopted in July 2026 was awaiting its application date, so present thresholds and remedies are used.
Inputs to collect
| Input | Where to find it |
|---|---|
| Operating airline | "Operated by" field on itinerary and boarding pass |
| First departure and final destination | E-ticket and fare construction |
| One ticket or separate bookings | Ticket numbers, booking references and travel-agent documents |
| Scheduled and actual arrival | Original itinerary, airport records and door-opening evidence |
| Cancellation notice time | Original email, SMS or app message |
| Disruption reason | Airline notice, airport information and later claim response |
Passenger nationality, home address and fare price do not select the EU261 distance band. Ticket price becomes relevant to refunds or downgrade calculations, not the standard EUR 250-600 amount.
Step 1: identify the correct airline
Look beyond the KM flight number. A codeshare may be sold by KM Malta Airlines but operated by another carrier. EU261 fixed claims are generally directed to the operating airline. A wet-leased aircraft and crew require closer reading because the contracting airline may retain operational responsibility for the scheduled service.
Also check the travel date. KM Malta Airlines' first flight was on 31 March 2024. A pre-launch Air Malta case cannot simply be entered against the new company because the two are distinct legal entities.
Use the KM versus Air Malta guide and operating-carrier guide if identity is uncertain.
Step 2: run the coverage test
| KM-operated direction | Current EU261 result |
|---|---|
| Departing Malta or another EU airport | Normally covered |
| Departing the EU for a third country | Normally covered |
| Departing a third country for Malta or another EU airport | Normally covered because KM is an EU carrier |
| Journey entirely outside EU scope | Check the local regime and contract |
Britain has a separate retained regime. UK261 covers departure from a UK airport on any airline and can cover arrival into the UK on an EU carrier such as KM. Sterling bands differ from EU euro amounts, and overlapping recovery for the same inconvenience must be avoided.
Step 3: select the disruption type
For a delay, enter actual arrival at the protected final destination. The normal fixed-payment threshold is three hours, measured by aircraft-door opening when passengers can disembark.
For a cancellation, enter the time between receipt of notice and scheduled departure, plus the offered replacement timing. Notice at least 14 days ahead usually removes the fixed sum. Shorter periods contain specific departure and arrival exemptions.
For denied boarding, confirm that refusal was involuntary, the passenger had a confirmed booking and valid documents, and check-in and gate deadlines were met. Volunteering for negotiated benefits is different.
Step 4: calculate protected distance
Use great-circle distance between first departure and final destination on the protected booking.
| Category | Current EU261 amount |
|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km | EUR 250 |
| Intra-EU over 1,500 km | EUR 400 |
| Other 1,500-3,500 km journey | EUR 400 |
| Other journey over 3,500 km | EUR 600 |
Do not sum sector mileage. Do not combine self-transfer tickets. Use the actual airports, not city centres or country-to-country estimates. If the result lies near a boundary, retain the coordinates and output.
Step 5: apply timing adjustments
Rerouting can permit a 50 percent reduction when arrival remains within two hours for the shortest band, three hours for the middle categories or four hours for the longest category. Enter actual arrival after rerouting, not the scheduled time of the substitute flight.
For cancellation, calculate whether the replacement offered fits the notice exemption. A flight offered seven to under 14 days ahead must depart no more than two hours early and arrive under four hours late to remove fixed compensation. With under seven days' notice, the corresponding limits are one hour early and under two hours late.
Step 6: test extraordinary circumstances
A calculator cannot conclusively decide cause from a label. KM must prove the concrete extraordinary event, its causal effect and reasonable measures. Severe unsafe weather, airport closure or binding air-traffic restrictions can qualify. Routine technical faults and ordinary airline staffing are usually part of normal operations, subject to the facts.
Mark the result as potentially eligible when the cause remains unknown. Request details before treating a generic rejection as final. Care, reimbursement and rerouting can continue even where fixed compensation is defeated.
Worked calculation
Assume two passengers hold one KM-operated booking from an EU airport to Malta. Great-circle distance is within 1,500 km. Their final arrival is 3 hours 35 minutes late and no extraordinary cause has yet been substantiated.
The provisional calculation is:
2 eligible passengers x EUR 250 = EUR 500
Hotel or meal receipts are not included in EUR 500. They belong in a separate expense request. If later evidence proves an unavoidable extraordinary event, fixed compensation may fail while supported care costs remain.
Now assume rerouting brings each traveller to the same destination only 1 hour 40 minutes late after cancellation. KM may be able to halve the shortest-band amount to EUR 125 per passenger if the statutory reduction conditions are met.
Turn the result into a documented claim
Save the calculation inputs, e-ticket, boarding passes, notices, actual-arrival proof and operating-carrier evidence. State the formula and requested amount for every traveller. Attach receipts under another heading and request a precise cause if it has not been supplied.
Submit through KM's Help Centre and keep the acknowledgement. A future nine-month filing step was approved by EU lawmakers in 2026 but was not yet applicable on the date above; do not use it as permission to postpone a current case.
FAQ
Is an online calculator result legally binding on KM?
No. It organises the facts and statutory bands, but entitlement still depends on evidence, coverage, timing, operating carrier and cause.
Should I enter departure delay or arrival delay?
For fixed delay compensation, enter final-arrival lateness. Departure waiting time is used separately for care and the five-hour reimbursement choice.
How do I calculate a connecting journey?
Use first departure to final ticketed destination on one protected booking. Independently purchased tickets should not be combined automatically.
Does the calculator include meals and hotel costs?
No. Those are evidence-based care expenses and should be claimed separately from the fixed statutory amount.
Can a SkyBux ticket produce compensation?
Potentially yes. Commercial reward tickets are not automatically excluded, but verify that the passenger travelled on an eligible issued ticket and apply the normal coverage tests.
