Cancel a KM Malta Airlines booking: refund and no-show rules
Short answer: when the passenger chooses to cancel a KM Malta Airlines booking, refund depends mainly on the fare conditions, unused taxes and any flexible option. This is not an EU261 cancellation, because the airline did not cancel the flight. KM says voluntary cancellation or date change can be requested up to one day before departure through its Malta Airport sales office or Customer Support Centre, subject to fare rules and fees.

Enter your route, date and type of disruption. We will check whether your case qualifies for a claim under EU 261/2004 or UK261.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:
Advise KM before missing the outbound journey. Under its conditions, an unannounced no-show can cancel later reservations on the same ticket, while prior notice should preserve subsequent sectors.
Fare and carriage material was checked on 13 August 2026. Always retain the rules displayed when the ticket was bought because products can change.
Passenger cancellation versus airline disruption
| Event | Main legal route |
|---|---|
| Passenger changes plans | Fare rules and voluntary refund conditions |
| KM cancels the flight | EU261 reimbursement or rerouting choice |
| KM significantly changes the timetable | Involuntary refund or cancellation analysis |
| Departure delay reaches five hours and passenger abandons | EU261 Article 8 reimbursement |
| Passenger misses check-in or gate deadline | No-show rules, normally no statutory compensation |
Do not select "voluntary cancellation" in the portal if KM actually cancelled or materially changed the flight. That classification can apply fees and obscure stronger statutory rights.
Check the fare before cancelling
Retrieve the e-ticket receipt and fare conditions. Identify:
- fare brand and booking class;
- refundable and non-refundable components;
- cancellation or service charge;
- deadline for a voluntary request;
- whether changes are allowed instead;
- treatment of taxes and carrier charges;
- payment by card, voucher or SkyBux;
- travel-agent servicing restrictions.
KM's conditions state that voluntary refunds are calculated according to the fare rules and may deduct reasonable service or cancellation fees. Some fares can be completely non-refundable.
A lower fare can still include taxes that are refundable when travel is not taken, but the amount and administrative fee require the ticket breakdown. Ask the issuer for a written calculation.
Contact KM before departure
KM's disruption and travel-information page says a passenger can request cancellation or change up to one day before departure by contacting the Customer Support Centre or the sales office at Malta International Airport. Availability, change fees and refundability apply.
Do not assume the website's Manage Booking function can complete every ticket. Codeshare, agency, group or partially used bookings may require the issuer. Keep screenshots of errors and the time of contact.
If illness or another force-majeure event prevents travel, KM's conditions contain a limited future-credit provision for a non-refundable unused fare when the passenger promptly advises the airline and supplies satisfactory evidence. It is not a guaranteed cash refund and reasonable administration charges can apply.
Protect the return and onward sectors
Airline tickets are normally used in sequence. KM's conditions allow later reservations to be cancelled when a passenger fails to use a flight without advance advice. They also say subsequent reservations will not be cancelled if the passenger informs KM beforehand.
State clearly which sector will not be used and which must remain active. Obtain written confirmation that the return or onward reservation is protected. A return booked separately is a different contract, but notify the relevant carrier if plans change.
The EU reform adopted in July 2026 includes a future prohibition on cancelling a return solely because the outbound was unused. That reform was not yet applicable on 13 August 2026, so do not rely on it before the application date.
Taxes, vouchers and mixed payment
Ask the issuer to separate fare, carrier surcharge, government taxes and airport charges. Items not incurred because the passenger did not fly can be refundable depending on law and terms, even where the base fare is not.
If a gift voucher or SkyBux paid part of the booking, request a component-by-component result. Cash, credit and loyalty value can return to their original instruments under different conditions. Do not assume a statutory euro compensation band applies to a voluntary cancellation.
Read expiry after recredit. A returned credit that expires immediately may require prompt challenge under the applicable programme or consumer law.
Agency and package bookings
An OTA-issued ticket is often serviced by the agency. Ask it for the fare calculation and proof that it submitted the cancellation before deadline. KM remains the carrier, but the seller can control ticket reissue or refund transmission.
For a package, cancelling the whole holiday is governed by package terms and statutory package-travel rules, not only the flight fare. Contact the organiser before cancelling the air component independently, because that can affect hotel and transfer rights.
The KM OTA and package guide explains roles.
When EU261 can still apply
If KM later cancels a flight that the passenger has already voluntarily cancelled, the entitlement depends on whether the passenger still held a confirmed reservation and what refund or termination had occurred. A person who ended the contract beforehand cannot automatically claim as an affected passenger.
If KM made a significant schedule change first, preserve the original notice and object to voluntary classification. The schedule-change guide explains when a refund or cancellation claim may be stronger.
Request wording and evidence
Give the booking reference, ticket number, passenger name, sector, request date and desired outcome. Quote the fare condition and ask for a line-by-line calculation. Identify later sectors that must remain valid.
Keep the original ticket, rules, cancellation acknowledgement and refund receipt. If no refund arrives, distinguish whether KM approved it and the agent retained it, or whether the carrier denied entitlement.
FAQ
Can I cancel a KM flight for a full refund?
Only if the fare or another applicable rule permits it. Voluntary cancellation does not create the EU261 refund right used for airline disruption.
How late can I request voluntary cancellation?
KM currently states that cancellation or date change can be requested up to one day before departure, subject to fare conditions and contact channels.
Will missing the outbound cancel my return?
It can under current sequencing rules if KM is not advised. Contact the airline beforehand and obtain confirmation that later reservations remain active.
Can illness produce a refund?
KM's conditions may allow future credit for an unused non-refundable fare with prompt notice and satisfactory force-majeure evidence, less reasonable administration charges.
Are unused taxes refundable?
Some taxes or charges not incurred can be, but request an itemised calculation from the ticket issuer rather than assuming every listed fee returns.
