JetBlue overbooking and denied boarding compensation

JetBlue denied-boarding compensation depends on departure territory and whether the passenger volunteered. A protected EU departure can pay EUR 250-600 and a UK departure GBP 220-520. An involuntary bump on a US departure uses 200% or 400% of the one-way fare, subject to current caps of USD 1,075 and USD 2,150. A volunteer receives the negotiated offer instead.

What happened to your flight?

Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:

Do not leave the gate without a written reason and replacement itinerary. The JetBlue amount guide compares the currencies and formulas.

Volunteer or involuntary bump

SituationLegal position
Passenger accepts points or credit to surrender seatVoluntary agreement controls
JetBlue selects passenger after too few volunteersInvoluntary denied boarding rules can apply
Passenger arrives after check-in or gate deadlineUsually no oversales payment
Passenger lacks required passport or visaUsually justified refusal
Aircraft change reduces available seatsCan still be involuntary denied boarding
Safety or weight restrictionFact-specific; oversales formula may not apply

Ask JetBlue to state whether the flight was oversold, whether volunteers were requested and why this passenger was refused. A boarding pass marked standby can require closer reservation analysis.

EU261 and UK261 departures

An eligible passenger with a confirmed reservation who presented as required and was involuntarily refused can receive fixed compensation immediately, plus reimbursement or rerouting and care.

Most JetBlue transatlantic EU departures fit the EUR 600 distance band. London departures generally fit GBP 520. If replacement transport arrives within the statutory long-distance reduction window, the amount can be halved.

Extraordinary circumstances are not the normal defence to commercial overbooking. The airline chose how many reservations to accept. A genuine safety, security, health or documentation reason is different and may justify refusal.

Payment should be in money unless the passenger freely agrees to vouchers or another form. Read restrictions, expiry and transferability before accepting.

US formula and current caps

For flights departing the United States, DOT rules compare arrival under substitute transportation with the original schedule. On international services leaving the US:

Replacement arrivalMandatory amount
Within 1 hourNo mandatory denied-boarding payment
1-4 hours late200% of one-way fare, maximum USD 1,075
More than 4 hours late, or no substitute400% of one-way fare, maximum USD 2,150

Domestic timing uses a one-to-two-hour first band and more than two hours for the higher band. Current caps should be rechecked because DOT adjusts them periodically.

JetBlue's April 2026 Contract of Carriage reflects the 200%/400% formula and current caps. If a separate summary displays an older flat number, request calculation under the current contract and DOT rule.

Calculate the one-way fare

US compensation uses the fare to the passenger's next stopover or final destination, including mandatory taxes and fees used by the regulation. Round-trip total should not simply be multiplied by four. Ask JetBlue for the one-way fare basis if the receipt does not show it.

Example: the relevant one-way fare is USD 350 and replacement arrival is five hours late on a US international departure. Four hundred percent is USD 1,400, below the USD 2,150 cap. The passenger can receive USD 1,400.

Example: fare is USD 800 and replacement arrival is two hours late. Two hundred percent is USD 1,600, but the cap limits payment to USD 1,075.

Rerouting, refund and care

Denied-boarding compensation does not buy the unused ticket. JetBlue must also arrange substitute transportation or refund under the applicable regime. A passenger who accepts rerouting retains the payment.

EU261 and UK261 require meals and hotel according to waiting time. US federal oversales rules focus on the denied-boarding payment, while JetBlue's operational commitments can add assistance. Ask for vouchers and keep receipts.

If the passenger has an event that will be missed, show reasonable earlier alternatives before self-purchasing. Record JetBlue's refusal or inability to reroute.

Payment timing and form

Under US rules, the airline should normally provide denied-boarding compensation at the airport on the day of the involuntary bump. If JetBlue arranges substitute transportation that leaves before payment can be prepared, payment should follow within 24 hours. Obtain a written calculation and do not accept a future credit as mandatory cash without informed agreement.

EU261 and UK261 likewise allow bank transfer, cheque or cash, while vouchers require signed passenger agreement. Record any partial payment: accepting the undisputed amount need not mean abandoning the balance unless a release says otherwise. Ask for the replacement arrival used in the calculation.

Volunteers should negotiate details

DOT does not cap a voluntary offer. Ask:

  • exact points or credit value;
  • expiry and blackout conditions;
  • whether the offer is transferable;
  • confirmed replacement flight and seat;
  • hotel, meals and transport;
  • what happens if the replacement is disrupted;
  • whether accepting waives other claims.

Do not volunteer based on a gate announcement alone. Obtain written terms before surrendering the boarding pass.

When refusal is justified

JetBlue can refuse carriage for missing travel documents, unsafe conduct, intoxication, health or security reasons and failure to meet deadlines, subject to law and non-discrimination duties. These are not commercial oversales.

If the stated reason is documentation, photograph valid documents and note when they were presented. If disability or mobility needs appear to have influenced refusal, request the Complaint Resolution Official and document the accessibility issue.

Evidence and submission

Keep confirmed reservation, check-in time, boarding pass, gate arrival evidence, written denied-boarding notice, volunteer announcement, one-way fare, replacement itinerary, final arrival and receipts. State explicitly that the passenger did not volunteer.

The JetBlue claim-form guide shows how to separate the statutory payment from refund, rerouting and care.

For a family, calculate each traveller separately. This guide was checked on 14 August 2026; verify current DOT caps on the claim date.

FAQ

Does JetBlue overbooking always pay USD 2,150?

No. US payment is a fare percentage limited by the cap and depends on replacement arrival delay.

Can I receive EUR 600 after volunteering?

Usually the voluntary agreement replaces involuntary denied-boarding compensation, so understand the offer before accepting.

Must JetBlue ask for volunteers first?

US and European systems generally require the airline to seek volunteers before involuntarily bumping passengers.

Does an aircraft swap count as overbooking?

It can produce compensable involuntary denied boarding when reduced capacity leaves a confirmed, timely passenger without a seat.

Are refund and denied-boarding payment separate?

Yes. The passenger also chooses replacement transport or unused-fare reimbursement.
