JetBlue compensation deadlines: do not confuse four different clocks

There is no universal deadline called “the JetBlue claim period.” EU261 and UK261 court limitation depends on the competent country; JetBlue's complaint-response targets are 30 and 60 days; domestic baggage requires very prompt notice; international baggage uses seven-day and 21-day written deadlines. The future EU nine-month submission rule adopted in July 2026 is not yet treated as applicable on 14 August 2026.

Claim typeImportant current timing
EU261 fixed compensationNational limitation law of the competent forum
UK261 fixed compensationApplicable UK limitation rules, often six years in England and Wales, with other UK jurisdictions checked separately
JetBlue written complaintAcknowledgement target 30 days; substantive response target 60 days
Direct claim before third-party involvementJetBlue contract generally asks for 28 days, unless shorter law controls
US card refundSeven business days after refund becomes due
Other US payment refundTwenty calendar days after refund becomes due
Domestic baggage initial noticeWithin four hours under JetBlue's current contract
Domestic baggage written claimWithin 21 days under JetBlue's current contract
International baggage damageWritten complaint within seven days of receipt
International baggage delayWritten complaint within 21 days of receipt
Montreal Convention court actionTwo years

This table is a starting point. Contract terms, mandatory local law and the specific forum can alter the analysis.

EU261 does not contain one shared limitation period

Regulation 261/2004 creates the right but does not set a single EU-wide court limitation period. The Court of Justice has left that period to national procedural law, subject to EU principles. The result can depend on the court with jurisdiction, the ticket contract and the departure or destination connections.

Do not state that every JetBlue EU claim lasts three, five or six years. A Paris departure may engage French rules; an Amsterdam departure may lead elsewhere; a connecting itinerary can create additional jurisdiction questions. Filing with JetBlue is sensible immediately, but an airline form may not suspend a court limitation period.

For UK261, England and Wales commonly use a six-year contractual limitation, while Scotland and Northern Ireland require their own analysis. A passenger should not wait near the boundary based on a generic web answer.

JetBlue's 28, 30 and 60-day periods

JetBlue's Contract of Carriage asks passengers to submit claims directly and allow 28 days before engaging a third party, except where applicable law requires a shorter period. This is an internal direct-claim condition, not a universal extinction of the passenger's right on day 29.

The Customer Service Plan says JetBlue will acknowledge written complaints within 30 days and provide a substantive response within 60 days. Those are response commitments. They do not mean the passenger has 60 days to submit, nor do they override a seven-day baggage notice.

Record the submission confirmation and case number. If no substantive answer arrives, consider escalation without assuming that correspondence stopped limitation.

Refund timing starts after entitlement

After JetBlue cancels or significantly changes a flight and the passenger rejects alternatives, DOT rules require automatic refund. Credit-card refunds are due within seven business days; cash and other payment forms within twenty calendar days.

These are airline processing deadlines, not the period for suing over every dispute. Preserve evidence of the cancellation, the declined alternatives and original payment method. An agent-issued ticket may require the merchant that collected payment to execute the refund.

Baggage clocks are much shorter

JetBlue's current contract requires domestic baggage loss or damage to be reported within four hours after arrival and followed by a written claim within 21 days. It also sets a one-year period for legal action after written denial of a domestic baggage claim.

For international carriage under the Montreal Convention, damage must be complained of in writing within seven days after receiving the bag, and delay within 21 days after the bag is made available. Court action is extinguished after two years, calculated under the Convention.

Report at the airport, obtain the reference and follow in writing. A property irregularity report alone should not be assumed to satisfy every later claim requirement. The JetBlue baggage guide provides the evidence list.

The adopted EU reform is future law

The Council gave final clearance in July 2026 to a reform that includes a future nine-month period for passengers to submit a compensation request and 30 days for the airline to respond. It must pass through publication and the specified application timetable before governing claims.

As of 14 August 2026, do not tell a passenger that nine months has already replaced national limitation law. The future submission period is also conceptually different from the longer period for court proceedings. Recheck the legal status on the actual claim date.

Practical deadline discipline

  1. Report baggage immediately before leaving the airport.
  2. Submit delay, cancellation or denied-boarding claims as soon as the final facts are available.
  3. Record the exact submission and response dates.
  4. Identify the forum before relying on any multi-year period.
  5. Send a formal written follow-up while evidence is still accessible.
  6. Escalate before the shortest plausible deadline, not the most generous estimate.

Keep copies outside the airline application. Account messages and booking histories can change after a ticket is closed.

Examples

Paris-New York EU261 claim: the passenger should submit promptly and identify the competent national limitation law before waiting. The future nine-month rule is not yet the current answer.

London-Boston UK261 claim: six years may be relevant in England and Wales, but a Scottish departure or different proceeding needs separate advice.

Damaged suitcase after an international flight: photograph it on arrival and submit written complaint within seven days, even while repair estimates are being collected.

Missing domestic bag: make the initial report within four hours and written claim within 21 days under JetBlue's contract.

FAQ

Do I currently have nine months to claim JetBlue EU261 compensation?

No. That period belongs to an adopted reform not yet applied on 14 August 2026; current limitation still depends on the competent law.

Does JetBlue's 60-day response target pause court limitation?

Not automatically. Suspension and interruption depend on the governing procedural law.

How long do I have for damaged international baggage?

Send written complaint within seven days after receiving the damaged bag and preserve the two-year court period.

Is the US refund deadline seven days?

For credit-card payments it is seven business days; cash and other methods use twenty calendar days.

Can I wait to report baggage until I return home?

That is risky. JetBlue's domestic initial-notice term is four hours, and immediate airport reporting protects the evidence.
