ITA Airways compensation: delay, cancellation and Rome connections
ITA Airways is an EU airline. Its qualifying flights can fall within EU261 when they depart the EU or EEA and when ITA itself operates a flight from a third country back into the protected area. A final arrival delay of at least three hours may produce EUR 250, EUR 400 or EUR 600 per passenger. Cancellation also creates a choice between refund and rerouting, while care costs are separate. For connections through Rome Fiumicino, one booking and the delay at the final destination are often decisive.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:
ITA uses the AZ code, but a codeshare can display an AZ number while another airline operates the aircraft. Read the itinerary before deciding whom to claim from, especially as partnerships and group relationships evolve.
| Situation | Main evidence | Possible claim |
|---|---|---|
| late arrival | door-opening time at the final destination | EUR 250-600 and care |
| missed Fiumicino connection | one booking and replacement arrival | final-destination compensation, rerouting, care |
| cancellation | notice date, offered route and cause | refund or rerouting plus possible fixed sum |
| involuntary downgrade | fare allocation for the affected sector | percentage reimbursement under Article 10 |
| baggage problem | PIR, receipts and written notice | Montreal Convention route, not the EU261 table |
EU261 coverage for ITA Airways
ITA's EU carrier status means that its own routes can be covered in both directions. An ITA-operated Rome-New York departure begins in the EU. An ITA-operated New York-Rome return can also be covered because the carrier is European and the destination lies inside the protected area.
The conclusion changes if a non-EU partner actually operates the inbound flight. The AZ marketing code and ITA ticket stock are not enough. Record the company stated after operated by for every segment.
For a journey involving the United Kingdom, compare UK261 with EU261. A UK departure has its own territorial protection, while an ITA flight into the EU can still engage EU261. Do not seek duplicate fixed compensation for one event.
The final destination through Rome Fiumicino
Rome Fiumicino is ITA's principal connecting airport. When all sectors appear on one accepted booking, a delay on the first flight that causes a missed onward connection is generally assessed at the final ticketed destination. A 70-minute arrival delay in Rome can therefore become an eight-hour arrival delay in Boston, Palermo or another endpoint.
Save the original minimum connection, boarding pass and rebooking. If ITA says the passenger arrived late at the gate, evidence of the inbound block time, bus transfer, security or passport-control queue can be important.
Two separate tickets are different. A passenger who constructs a self-transfer normally bears the risk of missing the second booking, even if both flights use ITA branding. Travel insurance or a special connection guarantee may help, but should not be described as EU261 protection without evidence.
Compensation amount and possible reduction
The distance bands are EUR 250 for flights up to 1,500 kilometres, EUR 400 for other flights between 1,500 and 3,500 kilometres and longer intra-EU journeys, and EUR 600 for other flights over 3,500 kilometres.
Distance on a connected booking is assessed using the protected journey and relevant case law, not by simply adding every flown leg. The final destination and great-circle distance can place a Europe-to-Americas itinerary in the EUR 600 band.
On eligible long-haul rerouting, a 50% reduction may be possible if the alternative reaches the destination within four hours of the original schedule. ITA must rely on the actual alternative arrival, not merely the fact that a new ticket was issued.
Cancellation choices and notice periods
After cancellation, reimbursement and rerouting are alternatives controlled by the passenger. A refund is sensible when the trip has lost its purpose; rerouting is usually better when reaching the destination remains essential. The earliest route can sometimes involve another airline if ITA has no timely seat, though passengers should first request compliant rerouting and document the response.
The fixed payment depends on notice. At least 14 days' notice generally removes it. Notice between seven and 14 days, or less than seven days, requires comparison with the statutory timing windows for the offered replacement. ITA should prove when the information reached the traveller.
A refund, care expenses and compensation should be itemised separately. Accepting rerouting does not automatically waive compensation. Accepting a voluntary voucher can affect the refund choice, so read the settlement terms.
Care, technical faults and external events
Meals and refreshments become due after distance-dependent waiting periods. Necessary accommodation and airport-hotel transport follow when the replacement leaves the next day. If ITA provides no vouchers or room, retain reasonable itemised receipts.
Serious weather, an airport or runway closure, security risk and external air traffic management can be extraordinary. Routine technical faults, ordinary maintenance and internal staffing generally remain within the carrier's operations. ITA bears the burden of explaining the event and reasonable measures when refusing fixed compensation.
Care is not conditional on airline fault. A genuine extraordinary event can defeat EUR 600 but still require meals, hotel and rerouting.
Claims, ENAC and ConciliaWeb
Submit the itinerary, booking reference, ticket and boarding-pass details, final arrival evidence, notice message and receipts through ITA's post-travel channel. State a separate amount for each passenger and list expenses by category.
ENAC is Italy's national civil aviation authority and publishes passenger-rights information. Its enforcement role should not be confused with collecting a private award in every case. ConciliaWeb provides a structured dispute-resolution route for eligible communications and transport disputes after the airline has first received the complaint. Check scope and procedural conditions for the individual case.
For a dispute linked to another departure country, that country's enforcement or ADR body may be more appropriate. Court jurisdiction can follow several connecting factors. Do not infer the limitation period solely from the ITA headquarters or the first airport.
Codeshare passengers should use the airline A-Z directory to identify the operator. The delayed-flight guide explains how the protected final arrival affects a connection claim.
FAQ: Frequently asked questions
Is an ITA Airways flight from the United States to Rome covered?
It can be when ITA actually operates it. ITA is an EU carrier, so a qualifying inbound flight to the EU can fall within EU261.
Does a missed connection at Fiumicino qualify?
Potentially, if the sectors were one protected booking and arrival at the final destination was at least three hours late. Cause and operator must also be assessed.
Can I demand a refund and still take ITA's replacement flight?
Normally reimbursement and rerouting are alternative choices for the same cancelled transport. Care and possible fixed compensation remain separate from that choice.
Is an ITA technical problem extraordinary?
Routine technical problems inherent in normal airline operations generally are not. A specific external or hidden manufacturing event can require a different analysis.
Does an AZ flight number prove ITA must pay?
No. It may be a marketing code. Check which carrier is named as the operator of the disrupted sector.
Should I complain to ENAC before ITA?
Submit a precise claim to the airline first. ENAC, ConciliaWeb, another national body or court may become relevant afterward, depending on the route and remedy sought.
