easyJet changed the flight time: refund, rerouting and possible compensation
Reviewed on 10 August 2026. A major easyJet schedule change can amount to cancellation rather than a harmless timetable update. The Court of Justice has ruled that moving departure forward by more than one hour is cancellation for EC261 purposes. When easyJet moves a flight later, the result depends on whether the original service was cancelled, the notice date, substitute timing and eventual arrival.

Classify the change
| easyJet update | Legal issue to examine |
|---|---|
| Departure advanced by more than one hour | Treated as cancellation under C-263/20 |
| Departure advanced by one hour or less | May remain a schedule adjustment; other contract rights can apply |
| Flight moved to another day or number | Strong cancellation indicator |
| Departure delayed, same flight operates | Delay analysis based on actual arrival |
| Original flight removed and passenger rebooked | Cancellation, even if the replacement is convenient |
| Airport changed | Cancellation or rerouting plus ground-transfer implications |
Marketing language is not decisive. Look at whether the originally planned flight was performed as scheduled and whether easyJet transferred the booking to another service.
Why an early flight can be cancellation
Moving departure earlier can cause serious inconvenience: passengers must reorganise travel, accommodation and commitments, and may be unable to reach the airport. In C-263/20, the Court held that a flight brought forward by more than one hour must be regarded as cancelled.
Record the original and new times exactly. An 08:00 departure moved to 06:45 is advanced by one hour 15 minutes and crosses the rule. A move to 07:10 is 50 minutes and does not fall within that specific classification, although easyJet's terms or consumer law may provide options.
Arrival convenience does not erase the advance. A new flight arriving earlier can still be cancellation because the passenger lost the original transport schedule.
Notice and replacement timing
If the event is cancellation, fixed compensation normally requires notice below 14 days. Between seven and 14 days, easyJet can avoid payment through a replacement leaving no more than two hours early and arriving less than four hours late. With less than seven days, the safe window narrows to no more than one hour early and less than two hours late.
A departure advanced by more than one hour is already outside the under-seven-day early-departure safe limit. For the seven-to-14-day band, compare both early departure and arrival. Preserve the email delivery time and any agent relay.
Even when fixed compensation is unavailable, cancellation supplies a choice of refund or rerouting. Do not let the 14-day rule be used to deny those transport remedies.
A later schedule change
If easyJet announces a new flight much later and removes the original, treat it as cancellation with offered rerouting. If the original flight remains and merely departs late on the day, measure actual door-opening arrival for delay compensation.
An advance message that predicts a three-hour delay is not itself proof of a qualifying arrival. The flight might recover time. Conversely, a shorter departure delay can become more than three hours at destination.
Use easyJet three-hour arrival time when the service operated rather than being replaced.
Refund, rerouting or accepting the change
After cancellation, you can choose unused-ticket reimbursement, transport at the earliest opportunity or later travel at a convenient date under applicable conditions. Accepting the changed flight does not automatically waive fixed compensation, but the replacement timing can reduce or remove it.
If the new time makes the trip useless, request cash reimbursement rather than an unwanted voucher. If you still need to travel, compare easyJet's option with other airlines and nearby airports. Ask easyJet to arrange a significantly earlier reasonable alternative.
Once you choose refund, ongoing transport and care normally end. Save the selection screen because labels such as “cancel flight” may include voluntary fare conditions rather than statutory cancellation rights.
Airport changes and ground transport
A move from Gatwick to Luton, or between airports serving another city, is not a trivial time adjustment. Confirm whether the original flight was cancelled, how easyJet will transport you and whether the revised airport is acceptable.
Where rerouting arrives at a different airport in the same region, the carrier should bear reasonable transfer to the booked airport or another agreed nearby destination. Preserve rail, coach or taxi options and itemised receipts if easyJet cannot arrange them.
Do not assume two airports carrying “London” in their name are interchangeable without cost and travel-time analysis.
Compensation amount and cause
EC261 bands are EUR 250, EUR 400 and EUR 600; UK261 uses GBP 220, GBP 350 and GBP 520. Distance and the correct regime determine the starting amount, while replacement arrival can support a 50% reduction.
easyJet may avoid fixed compensation by proving extraordinary circumstances and reasonable measures. A planned seasonal timetable revision or ordinary commercial decision is not an extraordinary event. Airport closure, security restriction or severe weather may be, but the airline should connect it to the change.
If the schedule moved weeks earlier because of network planning, notice timing may remove compensation while refund or contractual options remain. Do not manufacture an extraordinary-circumstances dispute where the 14-day rule already resolves the fixed claim.
Evidence and claim
Keep the original booking PDF, every revised itinerary and the message headers showing delivery. Screenshot Manage Bookings before accepting. Record whether the flight number, date, airports and operating airline changed.
Prepare a simple comparison:
| Item | Original | Revised |
|---|---|---|
| Departure airport and time | Booking value | easyJet update |
| Arrival airport and time | Booking value | easyJet update |
| Flight number | Booking value | replacement value |
| Notice received | Not applicable | date and time |
Submit the original flight through easyJet's compensation form and explain why the change is cancellation. Attach both itineraries. Request refund or rerouting through the disruption channel and fixed compensation separately.
If easyJet says a flight advanced by more than an hour was not cancelled, cite C-263/20 and ask for reassessment. The easyJet claim form guide shows how to keep the original and substitute details distinct.
The adopted EU reform is not yet applicable on 10 August 2026. Current cancellation classification and notice rules remain controlling until the amending regulation reaches its application date.
FAQ
How early must easyJet move a flight for it to count as cancellation?
The Court of Justice says more than one hour earlier. Measure from the original scheduled departure and keep both itineraries.
Can I use the changed easyJet flight and still claim?
Potentially. Accepting rerouting does not automatically waive compensation, but notice and replacement timing can remove or reduce the fixed amount.
Is a flight moved to the next day cancelled?
That is a strong cancellation scenario, particularly when the original service is not performed. Preserve the new flight number and easyJet's wording.
What if easyJet changes Gatwick to Luton?
Assess cancellation and rerouting, then require a clear ground-transfer arrangement. The passenger should not automatically bear reasonable transport between different airports.
Does 14 days' notice remove every right?
No. It usually removes fixed cancellation compensation, but refund, rerouting and contractual remedies can remain available.
