easyJet missed connection: what separate tickets change
Reviewed on 10 August 2026. easyJet states that it is a point-to-point carrier and does not operate connecting or through tickets. In the usual self-transfer, each flight is a separate booking for Regulation 261. A late first easyJet flight does not normally make the second airline's destination the “final destination” of the first claim. You can still claim for the disrupted easyJet sector itself, and package, insurance or intermediary protection may cover the missed onward journey.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:
Identify the booking structure
| Travel arrangement | Likely treatment |
|---|---|
| Two flights bought separately from easyJet | Each sector normally stands alone |
| easyJet followed by another airline on another PNR | Self-transfer; onward destination usually excluded from first fixed claim |
| Flight and hotel sold as an easyJet holidays package | Flight rights plus possible organiser remedies |
| Third party advertises connection protection | Read the protection contract; it is not automatically EC261 through carriage |
| Genuine single protected itinerary issued by another organiser | Preserve the full ticket and obtain fact-specific analysis |
Do not rely on one confirmation email alone. Some travel sites display several separate reservations in a single interface. Look for PNRs, ticket conditions, baggage through-check and responsibility for missed connections.
Why easyJet's model matters
The final-destination rule can make compensation depend on delay at the end of a connecting journey when all sectors form one booking. easyJet's passenger terms expressly reject connecting or through tickets for its own flights. That means a passenger normally accepts the time needed to collect baggage, cross immigration, change terminal and check in again.
Example: easyJet reaches Gatwick two hours late, causing a separately booked transatlantic flight to be missed. The easyJet sector is below the three-hour delay threshold, and the overseas destination does not normally extend it. The passenger should examine insurance, package rights or a self-transfer guarantee for the new ticket.
If the easyJet arrival itself is three hours late, fixed compensation may be due for that sector, subject to coverage and cause. The price of the missed flight is not added to the EUR or GBP statutory amount.
Protected packages and third-party promises
An easyJet holidays package combines flight and accommodation under package-travel rules and ATOL protection for relevant UK sales. If flight disruption makes the package materially deficient, the organiser can owe assistance, alternatives, price reduction or damages in addition to the operating airline's EC261 or UK261 duties.
Avoid double recovery. A replacement ticket reimbursed by the organiser or insurer should not be claimed again as the same loss from another party. Fixed Regulation 261 compensation addresses inconvenience and can coexist where its own tests are met.
A booking platform may sell “connection protection” or a guarantee. Read who provides it, minimum connection rules, reporting deadlines and approved replacement process. A commercial promise does not convert separate PNRs into an easyJet through ticket.
The easyJet holidays guide separates organiser and airline claims.
What to do when the first flight is delayed
Notify the second carrier or intermediary before its check-in or gate deadline. Ask whether it can preserve the onward booking, change the flight or record disruption. Do not assume easyJet will contact an unrelated airline.
Check baggage. A self-transfer generally requires collection and re-check, and airport minimum connection signs do not guarantee separate tickets. Preserve arrival, immigration, baggage-delivery and terminal-transfer times.
If easyJet is likely to arrive too late, document the forecast and available alternatives. A separate-ticket passenger has no automatic EC261 right to be rerouted on the second flight by easyJet, but early action can reduce loss and satisfy insurance mitigation duties.
Claim for the easyJet sector
Measure door-opening arrival at the destination on the easyJet booking. Apply EC261, UK261 or Swiss coverage. A qualifying delay can pay EUR 250-600 or GBP 220-520 according to distance.
If easyJet cancels, it must offer refund or replacement travel for that booking. Ask for the earliest opportunity; choosing a refund may leave you to reconstruct the rest of the itinerary. Compare the effect before selecting.
For an airline-controlled delay or cancellation, fixed compensation is separate from replacement travel. Severe weather or ATC can remove the fixed sum while care remains due during the first flight's wait.
Consequential losses
The Montreal Convention can address proven damage caused by passenger delay, subject to conditions, carrier defences and a liability ceiling. This is not an automatic reimbursement of every missed separate ticket. The passenger must prove causation, loss and reasonable mitigation, and court action has a two-year period.
National contract or consumer law may apply to an intermediary's guarantee. Travel insurance may cover missed departure or connection subject to policy wording. Package rules apply where the booking legally qualifies as a package.
Keep these claims distinct from EC261 or UK261 fixed compensation. State which party paid what and do not submit the same invoice twice.
Evidence file
Preserve both PNRs, confirmation pages, conditions shown at sale and any “protected connection” wording. Keep easyJet arrival time, baggage delivery, second-flight cutoff and communications with every provider.
For additional cost, retain the unused ticket, change-fee receipt, replacement fare and refund obtained. Show why the chosen alternative was reasonable. If a cheaper same-day option was available but ignored, the loss claim may be reduced.
Save the easyJet operator (EZY, EJU or EZS) and stated cause. Those facts decide the first sector's regulation coverage and defence.
Claim sequence
- Submit the easyJet fixed claim for its own sector when eligible.
- Request easyJet care expenses arising during its delay.
- Notify the second carrier and request any unused-tax or fare remedy.
- Use package, insurance or connection-protection procedure for the missed onward flight.
- Consider a Montreal damages claim only with evidence and appropriate advice.
Do not describe the separate onward city as easyJet's final destination in the official compensation form unless the legal booking genuinely supports that position. Accuracy increases credibility for the claim that does exist.
The adopted EU reform includes strengthened passenger information but does not transform easyJet's current point-to-point bookings into through journeys. It is not yet applicable on 10 August 2026.
FAQ
Will easyJet pay for a missed flight on another booking?
Not automatically. easyJet sells point-to-point travel, so EC261 or UK261 usually assesses its sector alone. Insurance, package rights, Montreal damages or a platform guarantee may be relevant.
Does one email mean my easyJet flights are one connection?
No. Check the PNRs and fare conditions. A travel site can display separate contracts together without creating through-ticket protection.
Can I claim if easyJet itself arrived three hours late?
Yes, for the easyJet segment when coverage, distance and cause support it. The fixed amount does not automatically include the cost of a separately booked onward flight.
What if easyJet holidays sold the whole trip?
Package-travel duties can exist alongside the operating airline claim. Contact the organiser promptly and coordinate payments to avoid recovering the same expense twice.
Does the Montreal Convention guarantee my new ticket cost?
No. It requires proof of compensable damage, causation and mitigation, and allows carrier defences. Its court period and liability rules differ from Regulation 261.
