easyJet Luton disruption: protect your UK261 claim at the airport

Reviewed on 10 August 2026. London Luton departures fall under UK261. If easyJet delays, cancels or overbooks a flight, preserve the airport and airline timestamps before the app changes, choose refund or replacement travel deliberately, and keep evidence of meals, overnight accommodation and transfers. Fixed compensation depends on distance, final delay, notice and cause.

Enter your route, date and type of disruption. We will check whether your case qualifies for a claim under EU 261/2004 or UK261.

What happened to your flight?

Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:

Build the record while events happen

Start with the booking confirmation and mobile boarding pass. Screenshot easyJet Flight Tracker and Luton Airport's flight information at each material change. Record the scheduled gate-close and departure time, cancellation message, replacement booking and actual arrival.

EvidenceWhat it establishes
Booking and boarding passConfirmed reservation and flight identity
Airport status screenshotContemporaneous public operation status
easyJet messageNotice time and airline explanation
Door-opening noteArrival delay rather than touchdown only
Rerouting offerWhether the replacement was timely and workable
Receipts plus help requestNecessary care not supplied directly

Do not depend on a boarding pass remaining inside the app. Save it to the device before a cancellation or rebooking removes it. A baggage-drop receipt and gate photograph can help prove timely presentation in a denied-boarding dispute.

When a Luton delay produces payment

UK261 fixed compensation normally requires final arrival at least three hours late and a cause within the carrier's responsibility. easyJet can avoid payment by proving extraordinary circumstances and all reasonable measures, not by applying a broad label.

Distance sets the amount: GBP 220 up to 1,500 km, GBP 350 on the middle band and GBP 520 above 3,500 km. A long-band arrival between three and four hours late can produce GBP 260. Calculate airport to airport, not the aircraft's detour.

Care starts earlier for many flights. Once the applicable waiting threshold is crossed, ask for food and non-alcoholic drink in reasonable relation to the delay. An overnight wait can require accommodation and airport-hotel transport even if the cause is extraordinary.

The easyJet three-hour guide distinguishes the compensation threshold from earlier assistance.

Cancellation and the irreversible choice

If easyJet cancels, first decide whether travel still serves its purpose. Reimbursement returns the eligible ticket price but usually ends the obligation to transport and care for you. Earliest rerouting preserves the journey and can be worth much more than a low fare.

Compare actual arrival, not simply the next departure shown. Another easyJet service tomorrow may be poorer than a reasonable indirect or alternative-airline option today. Ask the airline to arrange it and preserve the displayed choices.

A voucher is not compulsory. Check validity, account ownership and currency before accepting one. The easyJet refund guide explains how that commercial credit differs from cash and rerouting.

Fixed cancellation compensation is assessed separately. Notice of at least 14 days normally removes it. For shorter notice, replacement departure and arrival windows, route distance and cause must be checked.

Moving between London airports

A Luton disruption may lead to an offer from Gatwick, Stansted or another airport. These are not adjacent terminals. Verify that the transfer can be completed with baggage and before check-in closes.

Ask easyJet whether it will provide or repay ground transport. Save route searches, ticket prices and support messages. If a replacement arrives at another airport, document the time you reach Luton or another destination agreed with easyJet.

Never assume that the word “London” makes transfer cost the passenger's responsibility. Equally, do not choose an expensive private car without checking a reasonable rail, coach or shared option when those are safe and feasible.

For example, two adults and two children are offered a Gatwick departure four hours later. They should calculate baggage collection, a realistic cross-London journey and Gatwick bag-drop closure before accepting. If public transport cannot meet the cutoff but a pre-booked family vehicle can, ask easyJet to authorise that solution and preserve both route calculations. The evidence explains why a higher surface cost was necessary to use the airline's own replacement.

Overnight disruption

Request accommodation before booking. easyJet's current expense position refers to three-star or equivalent rooms where available and standard or shared local transport. If the airline can supply a suitable room and shuttle, taking a luxury alternative weakens the extra-cost demand.

When support is closed or the offer is unusable, capture the queue, unanswered chat and available room prices. Book a proportionate option, request an invoice with guest name and date, and retain both legs of transport evidence.

For families, explain why room configuration was necessary. For accessibility needs, show why an apparently cheaper property was unsuitable. Do not include alcohol, minibar or unrelated purchases in meal claims.

Identify the actual reason

Ask for more than “late inbound aircraft.” The earlier event, affected aircraft and mitigation determine whether the defence is valid. Luton fog or an air-traffic restriction can be extraordinary; routine maintenance and normal crew scheduling usually belong to airline operations.

A restriction may affect only part of the delay. Compare when the airport resumed operation with easyJet's eventual departure. The airline must establish a causal link and reasonable measures for the whole compensation defence.

Suppose fog prevents departure for 90 minutes, but the aircraft then remains at Luton for another four hours because its assigned crew exceeds working limits. The first period may be external while the later period needs separate evidence about planning and mitigation. Do not accept that one extraordinary event automatically explains every minute of final arrival delay.

Refund, rerouting and care remain distinct from fixed payment. Continue those requests even when easyJet proves an external event.

File and escalate

Use easyJet's official compensation portal for the fixed sum and its expense route for receipts. Put passenger names and amount in the claim, and attach only relevant, readable evidence. Keep submission IDs.

If easyJet issues a final rejection or does not resolve an eligible case, AviationADR can consider qualifying disputes under its current rules. Observe the applicable referral deadline. Court jurisdiction and limitation should be checked before waiting for an alternative process.

FAQ

Which law covers easyJet from Luton to Spain?

UK261 is the primary regime because the flight leaves the UK. The destination being in the EU does not replace that outbound rule.

Is touchdown the legal arrival time?

No. Delay compensation generally uses the time at which at least one aircraft door opens and passengers can leave, not runway touchdown.

Must I accept a flight from Gatwick instead?

You should compare whether it is reasonable and workable. Ask easyJet to address the cross-airport transfer, baggage and actual arrival before agreeing.

Can I claim a hotel during bad weather?

Care can remain due even when extraordinary weather removes fixed compensation. Ask easyJet first and keep proof if reasonable self-booking becomes necessary.

Does a refund include UK261 compensation?

No. Ticket reimbursement and fixed compensation are separate. A refund can be due while compensation fails, or both can be valid on the same cancellation.
