Delta refund, eCredit or rerouting: choose the right remedy

When Delta cancels or significantly changes a flight and the passenger rejects the alternative without travelling, cash refund to the original payment method is normally available under US rules. On a covered EU261 or UK261 cancellation, the passenger instead chooses among reimbursement and two forms of rerouting. Delta eCredit is optional, not a compulsory replacement for cash where a statutory refund right exists.

Check your case in the form

Enter your route, date and type of disruption. We will check whether your case qualifies for a claim under EU 261/2004 or UK261.

Step 1 of 813% completed

What happened to your flight?

Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:

Decide whether the priority is ending the trip, reaching the destination soon or travelling later. Accepting one transport remedy can close another, while fixed compensation and reasonable care remain separate.

Compare the three choices

RemedyBest suited toMain consequence
Cash refundJourney no longer serves its purposeUnused ticket value returns to original payment method
eCreditPassenger voluntarily wants flexible future Delta travelCredit rules, validity and passenger restrictions apply
Earliest reroutingDestination still needs to be reached quicklyDelta should provide suitable replacement transport

Do not press “cancel” in My Trips merely to inspect the value. Capture the offer, terms and alternative itinerary first.

Cash refund after Delta cancellation

US DOT rules require an automatic refund when an airline cancels or significantly changes a flight, the passenger does not accept rebooking, travel credit or another alternative, and does not travel. The refund covers the unused ticket and eligible ancillary fees for services not received.

Delta says it first tries to rebook affected passengers at no added cost. If the replacement is not acceptable, the passenger can search alternatives or cancel the rebooked itinerary for refund of the unflown portion, prepaid seat upgrade, Preferred Seat and applicable bag fees.

State clearly that the alternative is rejected and cash to the original payment method is requested. Do not use the word “refund” for hotel receipts; those are reimbursements.

Delta's significant-change thresholds

For many tickets issued on or after 28 October 2024, Delta currently describes a significant schedule change as departure or arrival at least three hours earlier or later for a domestic itinerary, or at least six hours for an international itinerary. Its materials also identify certain airport changes, added connections, lower cabin and accessibility-related changes.

Ticket date and current terms matter. DOT's legal standard governs the refund entitlement, while Delta's contract describes how it implements covered changes. Keep the original schedule and the replacement Delta assigned.

A smaller change can still make a connection impossible or interact with European cancellation law. The Delta schedule change guide covers flights moved earlier by more than one hour on a protected route.

EU261 reimbursement and rerouting

For a covered cancellation, Article 8 gives a choice:

  1. reimbursement within seven days of the unused ticket and, where the journey no longer serves its purpose, relevant used portions plus a return flight to the first departure point;
  2. rerouting to the final destination at the earliest opportunity under comparable conditions;
  3. rerouting at a later date convenient to the passenger, subject to seat availability.

EU261 covers Delta-operated departures from the EU/EEA and Switzerland. UK261 provides corresponding choices for Delta-operated UK departures. Delta's US nationality does not remove these outbound rights.

A direct Delta-operated US-to-Europe flight normally relies on US refund rules because Delta is not an EU or UK carrier. The destination alone does not create European rerouting rights.

Delay of five hours or more

On a protected journey, an expected departure delay of at least five hours allows the passenger to abandon travel and seek reimbursement under Article 8. If part of the journey was already completed but the trip no longer serves its purpose, a return to the first point of departure may also be relevant.

This is not an extra payment for waiting five hours. A passenger who travels can still assess fixed delay compensation from final arrival, while a passenger who abandons travel uses the reimbursement remedy.

Read the Delta five-hour delay refund guide before cancelling a remaining connection or return sector.

eCredit is a voluntary alternative

Delta currently states that an eCredit chosen after its cancellation, significant delay or significant change is valid for five years from issuance. A voluntary cancellation without a Delta-caused significant disruption generally produces an eCredit valid for one year from the original ticket date, subject to ticket conditions and fees.

Check the displayed validity for the specific certificate. Record the number, owner, value, currency and restrictions. Do not assume all Delta credits are transferable; many are tied to the named passenger.

Cash can be more valuable than a larger-looking credit if future fares, routes or eligibility are uncertain. Once a passenger voluntarily selects eCredit instead of an available refund, reversing the choice may require an appeal.

Rerouting at the earliest opportunity

If the destination still matters, ask Delta for the earliest suitable route to the booked final destination. Provide a specific same-day Delta, Air France, KLM, Virgin Atlantic or other ticketing-partner option if visible. Partner availability is not guaranteed, but a concrete request is easier to assess.

Comparable conditions concern cabin and practical transport, not the same seat number. If only a lower cabin is offered, preserve documents for a separate downgrade claim. If another airport is used, agree necessary ground transport.

Do not accept an unwanted refund if the real request is rerouting. Once the ticket is refunded and closed, carrier-arranged replacement transport can become difficult to obtain.

Buying a replacement independently

Self-purchase carries risk. Under European guidance, an airline that fails to offer required rerouting at the earliest opportunity may have to reimburse a reasonable alternative. The passenger should give Delta a genuine chance to arrange it, document available routes and preserve the refusal or inability to help.

Delta's ordinary US expense policy expressly excludes alternative transportation to the final destination. A US-policy reimbursement form is therefore not a substitute for a protected Article 8 rerouting claim.

Keep the new ticket, payment, boarding pass and proof it was used. Explain why the selected route and cabin were reasonable and why a later Delta offer was inadequate.

One ticket, OTA and partner bookings

For one reservation, request a remedy for the complete itinerary to the final destination. Cancelling one coupon independently can place later flights at risk. Ask Delta to confirm that return and companion sectors remain active.

If a travel agency issued the ticket, Delta may direct the refund through that agency because it controls settlement. The operating carrier remains responsible for applicable passenger rights, and Delta's own EU request page says to contact it if the agency causes difficulty.

For a partner-operated flight sold under a DL number, the operating airline handles statutory disruption. The ticket issuer may still process the money. The Delta claim form guide separates those roles.

Fixed compensation remains a separate question

Refund or rerouting does not automatically remove EUR 250–600 or GBP 220–520 compensation for a qualifying protected cancellation, long delay or denied boarding. Notice timing, replacement schedule, cause and distance determine that payment.

Likewise, fixed compensation does not replace the unused ticket refund. Present each remedy under its own heading. A weather cancellation may defeat the fixed amount but leave refund, rerouting and care intact.

Use the Delta amount guide only after establishing route coverage and disruption type.

Evidence before choosing

Save the original itinerary, cancellation or change message, new itinerary, alternative options and every screen showing refund or eCredit value. Keep PNR, ticket number, payment method and ancillary receipts.

Write a short election to Delta: “I reject the replacement itinerary and request cash refund to the original payment method,” or “I choose rerouting at the earliest opportunity and do not accept refund or eCredit.” Clear wording reduces accidental closure.

If no response arrives, preserve the case number and escalate through the appropriate body for the departure location. Do not file a card dispute while still expecting Delta to keep and reroute the same ticket without understanding the conflict.

Worked examples

Paris-New York cancelled: the passenger still needs to travel and asks Delta to use a same-day partner service. EU261 rerouting and care apply; fixed compensation is assessed separately.

Atlanta-Amsterdam changed by eight hours: the passenger rejects Delta's international replacement and does not travel. US refund rights are central; EUR 600 is not automatic on this Delta-operated direction.

London-Atlanta cancelled by weather: UK261 gives a refund or rerouting choice and care. Weather may remove GBP 520 but cannot force eCredit.

Amsterdam-New York delayed more than five hours before departure: the passenger abandons a now-useless trip and requests reimbursement under EU261 instead of boarding.

FAQ

Must I accept Delta eCredit after a cancellation?

No. When a statutory refund right exists, the passenger can choose cash to the original payment method instead of voluntary credit.

How long is disruption eCredit currently valid?

Delta currently states five years from issuance for eCredit chosen after its qualifying cancellation, significant delay or significant change.

Can I demand rerouting instead of a refund from Europe?

Yes. A protected cancellation gives a choice that includes travel at the earliest opportunity under comparable conditions.

Does taking a refund eliminate fixed compensation?

Not automatically. A qualifying protected cancellation can support both remedies because they address different losses.

Who refunds a ticket bought through an online agency?

The issuing agency may process the money, while the operating carrier remains responsible for statutory disruption duties; keep both case records.
