Brussels Airlines refund, voucher or rerouting: choose carefully

Short answer: after Brussels Airlines cancels a flight, choose between cash reimbursement, rerouting at the earliest opportunity, or later rerouting at a convenient date subject to seats. A voucher is voluntary and should be accepted only after checking value and restrictions. Once a cash refund is requested, the ticket is no longer valid and rebooking normally ends, so decide whether you still need transport first.

Step 1 of 813% completed

What happened to your flight?

Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:

Fixed compensation and reasonable care are separate. A passenger can accept rerouting and still claim EUR 250-600 when its independent conditions are met.

Make the choice for each passenger only after checking whether the booking must remain together. A family may prefer one shared route, while an adult travelling alone for a fixed event may reasonably choose reimbursement. Ask Brussels Airlines to record any split booking so children, baggage and assistance do not detach from the correct traveller.

Compare the three Article 8 choices

ChoiceWhat Brussels Airlines owesMain consequence
ReimbursementRefund of unused ticket and relevant used partsTransport contract ends for refunded travel
Earliest reroutingComparable transport as soon as reasonably possiblePassenger continues the journey
Later reroutingTravel on a suitable later date, subject to availabilityPassenger postpones by choice

Do not confuse later rerouting with an ordinary voluntary ticket change. After carrier cancellation, Article 8 provides the choice without relying solely on fare flexibility.

Cash reimbursement

Current EU261 calls for reimbursement within seven days. It can cover unused travel and parts already used when the journey no longer serves its original purpose, plus a return flight to the first departure point where relevant.

Brussels Airlines' refund portal warns that once refund is requested, the ticket becomes invalid and rebooking is no longer possible. Preserve the original itinerary, cancellation notice and refund confirmation before proceeding.

Airport taxes and charges not incurred can also be refundable under the carrier's Conditions of Carriage. Ancillary fees for an undelivered seat, bag or service should be listed separately. Do not let a partial automatic refund silently settle fixed compensation.

Earliest rerouting

If reaching the destination remains important, ask for the route that arrives reasonably soon under comparable conditions. Brussels Airlines may use its own aircraft, Lufthansa Group, Star Alliance or another suitable carrier. The legal standard is not “next Brussels Airlines flight” when a materially earlier reasonable alternative exists.

Check final arrival, cabin, baggage, visa, accessibility and airport transfer. Screenshot realistic alternatives and ask the carrier to book them. Give Brussels Airlines a practical opportunity before purchasing independently.

If the replacement starts at another airport, request ground transport. If it arrives at an alternative airport serving the same region, the airline must complete transfer to the booked airport or another nearby point agreed with the passenger.

Later travel

Later rerouting can suit a holiday or family visit that remains useful on another date. Seat availability applies, but the carrier should not simply convert this statutory choice into a fare-difference sale. Ask for written confirmation that the rebooking is made under the disruption remedy.

Ancillary services may need reattachment or refund. Check seats, baggage, special assistance, pets and accepted upgrades on the new date.

Voucher or travel credit

A voucher requires free and informed agreement. Before accepting, inspect:

  • cash value and any bonus;
  • expiry and booking deadline;
  • passenger-name and transfer rules;
  • eligible routes and operating airlines;
  • treatment of unused balance;
  • insolvency protection;
  • wording about waiver of compensation or expenses.

A larger headline value can be worse than cash if it expires quickly or cannot cover taxes. Save the full terms shown at acceptance.

Do not accept credit merely to unlock immediate customer support. Ask for the cash and rerouting choices first.

Automatic rebooking and silence

Brussels Airlines says it often rebooks automatically after short-notice cancellation. Review that itinerary promptly. Silence can be treated differently under US DOT refund rules on covered tickets, so passengers on US journeys should read every notification and explicitly reject an unsuitable alternative where needed.

An automatic itinerary does not prove the passenger knowingly waived cash, nor does it always satisfy earliest rerouting. Preserve when the offer arrived and whether it was accepted, rejected or merely displayed.

Travel-agent bookings

An online or traditional agent may be the merchant that processes ticket money. Brussels Airlines remains responsible for operating-carrier duties on its flight. Ask both parties to state their role rather than allowing circular referrals.

If the agent withholds a carrier refund or deducts a service fee, request the airline refund record and the agent's contractual basis. Package organisers have separate duties when the flight forms part of a package. The OTA and package page explains this split.

Compensation after choosing transport

Rerouting does not erase fixed compensation. Its arrival timing can reduce the amount under statutory windows. Reimbursement also does not automatically eliminate a cancellation payment, although the facts and cause must qualify.

EUR 250, EUR 400 or EUR 600 is per passenger and not based on ticket price. Meals, hotel, replacement transport and downgrade have separate calculations. State each remedy independently.

Evidence and wording

Keep the cancellation or delay notice, original ticket, every option shown, messages with the airline or agent, selection confirmation and payment record. If rejecting a voucher, say clearly that you choose reimbursement or rerouting under Article 8 and do not consent to credit.

For earliest rerouting, name a concrete available alternative. For reimbursement, identify unused and now-pointless used coupons. Submit through the relevant Brussels Airlines route and save the case number.

FAQ

Can Brussels Airlines force me to accept a voucher?

No. Travel credit requires voluntary agreement; cash reimbursement and rerouting remain statutory choices after cancellation.

Can I request a refund and later ask Brussels Airlines to rebook me?

Usually not for the same travel. Once reimbursement is requested, the ticket becomes invalid and the transport duty generally ends.

Does accepting rerouting waive EUR 250-600?

No. Fixed compensation is separate, although replacement timing and cause can affect entitlement and amount.

Must rerouting stay within Lufthansa Group?

No. Earliest comparable transport can involve another reasonable airline or mode where appropriate.

Who pays a refund for a travel-agent ticket?

The agent may process money as merchant, while Brussels Airlines retains its own passenger-rights duties. Obtain records from both if responsibility is disputed.
