Brussels Airlines Miles & More: award tickets, upgrades and claims
Short answer: a publicly available Brussels Airlines Miles & More award or Cash & Miles ticket can qualify for EU261 fixed compensation. The statutory amount remains EUR 250, EUR 400 or EUR 600 per passenger; it is not reduced because miles funded the fare. Refund of miles and taxes after cancellation, restoration of an unused upgrade, and Article 10 downgrade reimbursement are separate calculations.

Check your case in the form
Enter your route, date and type of disruption. We will check whether your case qualifies for a claim under EU 261/2004 or UK261.
What happened to your flight?
Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.
Choose the situation that applies to your flight:
Preserve the award receipt before rebooking. Loyalty systems can show the new itinerary without retaining the original mileage, cabin and coupon details.
Three booking types
| Product | How it works | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|---|
| Miles & More flight award | Ticket issued for a set mileage amount plus taxes and fees | Award receipt, mileage debit, ticket and fare class |
| Cash & Miles | Part or all of normal ticket price converted into miles | Cash receipt, mileage debit and standard fare conditions |
| Paid, bid or mileage upgrade | Separate transaction changes one selected flight cabin | Acceptance, payment or miles, original and upgraded class |
Brussels Airlines says Cash & Miles is available from 3,000 miles in supported markets, uses the total ticket price including taxes and charges, and retains the conditions of the normal ticket. It cannot currently be used to purchase upgrades; those follow separate channels.
EU261 includes public award tickets
Article 3 excludes passengers travelling free or at a reduced fare not available to the public, but expressly includes tickets issued under frequent-flyer and other commercial programmes. A normal Miles & More award therefore does not lose protection merely because no cash base fare was paid.
Coverage, event, final arrival and cause still matter. An SN-coded award operated by a partner follows the actual operator. A staff concession or private industry fare can need a different Article 3 analysis because it may not be publicly available.
Fixed compensation remains money
If the journey qualifies, calculate EUR 250, EUR 400 or EUR 600 by route distance, with the usual reduction rules. Brussels Airlines should not automatically pay a lower mileage amount or return only the miles used as substitute for statutory compensation.
A passenger can voluntarily agree to a mileage offer, but should compare its real restrictions and settlement wording. Fixed compensation belongs to each eligible traveller, while the miles may have come from one family member's account.
For UK261 routes, use the statutory GBP bands rather than converting miles. Overlapping EU and UK rights do not permit two fixed recoveries.
Cancellation refund of an award
After Brussels Airlines cancellation, choose rerouting or reimbursement. An award reimbursement can require redeposit of miles plus return of eligible taxes and fees. Record expiry dates and ask that involuntarily returned miles do not expire unfairly because of processing delay.
Cash & Miles requires a split record: miles, cash, taxes and any card amount. Do not accept only the cash portion without confirmation of mileage restoration. If a travel agent or loyalty service issued the ticket, identify who controls redeposit.
Accepting reimbursement usually ends rerouting for the same travel. If the destination is still needed, ask for award-ticket reissue or comparable transport first.
Upgrades after disruption
Brussels Airlines offers bid and fixed-price upgrades and directs mileage upgrades through Miles & More. Its current conditions state that voluntary cancellation does not normally refund an accepted upgrade. That rule is different when the airline cancels, rebooks the passenger without the purchased cabin or cannot deliver the upgrade.
Request restoration of money or miles for an undelivered upgrade. If the confirmed higher cabin was part of the transport and the passenger travels lower, Article 10 can also apply. Avoid claiming the same upgrade value twice without explaining the relationship.
Downgrade calculation
Article 10 uses 30, 50 or 75 percent of the price attributable to the downgraded sector. A separate mileage upgrade can make the fare base disputed. Preserve:
- original ticket and cabin;
- upgrade offer and acceptance;
- cash or mileage debit;
- replacement boarding pass;
- fare and tax breakdown;
- any automatic refund or mileage redeposit.
Ask Brussels Airlines for its sector calculation under Mennens. Do not invent a universal euro value per mile. A transparent restoration of the upgrade and fare-based Article 10 assessment is more defensible.
The downgrade guide explains the percentage method.
Codeshares and loyalty ownership
Miles & More does not make Lufthansa the operating airline. A Brussels Airlines award can be performed by Brussels Airlines, Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian or another partner. Direct fixed compensation to the operator that caused the disruption.
The loyalty programme can still handle mileage redeposit. This creates two contacts, not one group defendant. State the flight claim and loyalty-account correction separately.
If miles came from another person's account, obtain that member's record and authority for the redeposit issue. The passenger retains the fixed claim even where someone else funded the award.
Family and companion bookings
List every traveller and ticket. One award account can fund several passengers, but EUR compensation belongs individually. A child on a public award can qualify. An infant without a paid seat or qualifying fare requires separate analysis.
Companion promotions and private employee tickets should be checked against public availability. Preserve the product terms in force at issue rather than relying on the current programme page.
Evidence and request
Download the award receipt, mileage-account statement, e-ticket, original itinerary, boarding passes and disruption notices. Record scheduled and actual final arrival. Save replacement offers and any loyalty-account change.
In the Brussels Airlines claim, request statutory compensation in money and list rerouting, taxes, miles and upgrade restoration separately. In the Miles & More contact, cross-reference the airline case but focus on account entries. Keep both confirmations.
Brussels Airlines' current one-year EU261 clause makes prompt fixed-claim action important. Programme deadlines for mileage correction can be shorter, so notify both systems after travel.
FAQ
Can a Miles & More award ticket receive EUR 600?
Yes when it is a publicly available programme ticket and the long-haul disruption satisfies EU261 conditions.
Is compensation paid back in miles?
Statutory compensation is a fixed monetary amount. Mileage credit can be accepted voluntarily but should not be imposed as the default substitute.
What happens to Cash & Miles after cancellation?
Track both the cash refund and mileage redeposit, plus eligible taxes. Do not treat one component as the complete reimbursement.
Can an undelivered paid upgrade be refunded?
Yes, airline-caused non-delivery is different from voluntary cancellation. Preserve the upgrade confirmation and new cabin evidence.
Does Miles & More decide which airline owes EU261?
No. Fixed liability normally follows the actual operating carrier, while the programme manages mileage-account transactions.
