Brussels Airlines partner rebooking: who transports and who pays?
Short answer: Brussels Airlines may reroute a disrupted passenger on Lufthansa Group or Star Alliance partners, but the replacement airline does not automatically assume liability for the original delay or cancellation. Separate three roles: the carrier that caused the event, the carrier performing new transport, and the ticket seller processing money.

Check your case in the form
Enter your route, date and type of disruption. We will check whether your case qualifies for a claim under EU 261/2004 or UK261.
What happened to your flight?
Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.
Choose the situation that applies to your flight:
Partner availability can make rerouting through Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich, Vienna or another airport practical. It does not limit Article 8 to group flights if a reasonable earlier route exists elsewhere.
The three-role table
| Role | Typical duty |
|---|---|
| Original operating carrier | Fixed compensation, original care and rerouting decision |
| Replacement operating carrier | Safely perform the new flight and handle its own later disruption |
| Ticketing or travel agent | Process certain ticket changes or refunds as merchant |
One company can fill several roles, but shared ownership does not merge them. Write each legal name next to the relevant sector.
Earliest opportunity under Article 8
After cancellation or a missed protected connection, the passenger can choose earliest rerouting under comparable transport conditions. Brussels Airlines' automatic option may be reasonable, but it is not necessarily the final answer when it creates a long avoidable wait.
Search concrete alternatives while seats remain visible. Ask Brussels Airlines to reroute on a named service and preserve the request. Relevant considerations include final arrival, cabin, baggage, visa or transit restrictions, accessibility and airport transfer.
An available Lufthansa or SWISS seat is useful evidence, not proof that Brussels Airlines was technically able to issue it at that moment. Give the carrier a realistic opportunity to act.
Is another alliance airline required?
EU261 does not say rerouting must stay within Star Alliance or Lufthansa Group. The legal standard is comparable transport at the earliest opportunity. A non-alliance flight can be relevant if it is reasonable and materially earlier.
Commercial agreements and seat access affect practical booking, but they do not turn an offer arriving days later into earliest rerouting merely because it uses the same group. Document both the proposed route and realistic alternatives.
Self-booking after refusal or silence
Buying a replacement independently carries reimbursement risk. Strengthen the record by:
- asking Brussels Airlines for earliest rerouting;
- proposing a specific route with price and availability;
- preserving refusal, silence or inaccessible support;
- choosing a comparable fare rather than unnecessary luxury;
- keeping proof of payment and boarding;
- claiming only the reasonable consequence of the carrier's failure.
Urgency matters. A passenger stranded overnight with no service channel and a disappearing seat has a stronger explanation than someone who rejects an adequate same-day option for personal preference.
The alternative-transport page deals with rail and independent purchases in more detail.
Cabin and downgrade on the replacement
Comparable conditions do not always mean the identical seat product. If a Business passenger is rerouted in Economy because no equivalent cabin is available, preserve the original fare, coupon price and new boarding pass. Article 10 downgrade reimbursement may apply in addition to delay or cancellation compensation.
If Brussels Airlines places an Economy passenger in Business, it cannot demand a supplement under the Regulation's upgrading rule. Paid seat reservations or baggage services that cannot be delivered should be refunded separately.
Baggage and special services
Confirm whether bags are retagged to the partner flight. Keep the original and new baggage receipts. If luggage does not arrive, create a PIR at the final airport against the actual carriage chain rather than returning to the original BRU desk days later.
Request rebooking of wheelchairs, medical assistance, unaccompanied-minor arrangements, pets and special equipment. A route that appears faster but cannot safely provide a required service may not be comparable.
Who pays fixed compensation?
Suppose Brussels Airlines cancels BRU–Africa and reroutes the passenger through Frankfurt on Lufthansa. The event remains Brussels Airlines' cancellation; Lufthansa's successful replacement service does not take over that fixed claim. Its arrival timing can, however, affect whether compensation is reduced under rerouting windows.
If Lufthansa's replacement then suffers an independent qualifying delay, analyse that later event separately and prevent overlapping recovery. Preserve both booking histories and operator records.
For a missed connection caused by a partner feeder, the causal operator may be responsible even though Brussels Airlines manages rebooking at BRU. The operator guide provides the sector test.
Care during partner rerouting
The carrier responsible for the disrupted journey must ensure reasonable care while passengers wait. A voucher may be issued through shared airport systems, but retain evidence of who offered it. Hotel, meals and local transfer are not deducted from fixed compensation.
If rerouting moves departure to another airport, ask who pays the ground transfer. Keep rail or taxi receipts and the written instruction. Do not assume the replacement airline will reimburse costs created before its own transport begins.
Miles & More and ticket reissue
Award tickets and Cash & Miles can be reissued through shared loyalty systems, but the passenger-rights analysis still follows operating carriers. Record returned miles, taxes, expiry adjustments and any involuntary cabin change separately.
Do not accept a mileage credit as settlement of EUR compensation unless the value and waiver are consciously agreed. The Miles & More guide covers reward-specific evidence.
Claim record
Save the original ticket, proposed automatic rebooking, all alternative searches, service conversations, reissued coupons, boarding passes and final arrival. In the request, use a timeline that assigns each action to the correct airline.
State whether you seek fixed compensation for the original event, reimbursement of a self-bought route, care costs or downgrade. Each line needs its own evidence. Act promptly because operator-specific deadlines can differ.
FAQ
Must Brussels Airlines reroute me only within Lufthansa Group?
No. Article 8 focuses on earliest comparable transport, so a reasonable non-group option can be relevant.
Does Lufthansa owe compensation because it flew the replacement?
Not for the original Brussels Airlines event. Lufthansa is responsible for performing its flight and for any separate disruption it causes.
Can I buy another airline's ticket myself?
Sometimes, but first give Brussels Airlines a realistic opportunity to reroute and preserve evidence that no adequate option was provided.
What if the replacement has a lower cabin?
Keep both tickets and boarding passes. Article 10 reimbursement can apply to the affected downgraded sector.
Will my bag automatically follow the partner route?
Do not assume it. Confirm retagging, retain both bag receipts and file a PIR at final arrival if luggage is missing.
