Brussels Airlines delay over five hours: refund, return or continue

Short answer: after a Brussels Airlines flight is expected to depart at least five hours late, a passenger may abandon a journey that no longer serves its purpose and request reimbursement. Where relevant, the airline must also provide a return flight to the initial departure point. Continuing the trip preserves transport and care rights and may still produce fixed compensation based on final arrival.

What happened to your flight?

Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:

The five-hour rule is a choice, not an automatic cancellation of the booking. Decide what outcome you need before accepting money or boarding an alternative service.

Three clocks that passengers mix up

ClockMain consequence
2, 3 or 4 hours expected departure delayMeals, refreshments and communications, based on distance
3 hours final arrival delayPossible fixed EUR 250/400/600 payment
5 hours departure delayOption to abandon a now-pointless journey for reimbursement

A passenger can cross one threshold without crossing another. A five-hour wait followed by substantial time recovery can support reimbursement if the traveller abandons the trip, even though arrival compensation would have been uncertain. A missed connection can produce a seven-hour final delay after the feeder departed only 90 minutes late.

When reimbursement fits

Article 8 covers the cost of the ticket for unused parts and, where the journey no longer serves the passenger's original plan, parts already used. A return flight to the first point of departure is due at the earliest opportunity when needed.

Consider a single booking Antwerp-area traveller starts with a flight from Brussels to a European connecting point and then onward. The first sector operates five hours late, making a one-off event impossible. If the purpose has objectively disappeared, the passenger can explain that the remaining travel has no value and request reimbursement plus return where the trip already began.

Evidence of lost purpose may include an event ticket, meeting invitation, cruise departure, fixed medical appointment or a short stay that would be consumed by the delay. The Regulation does not require every trip to be business-related, but a concrete explanation is stronger than saying travel became inconvenient.

When continuing is better

If reaching the destination remains important, do not choose a full refund merely because the app offers it quickly. Once reimbursement is selected, Brussels Airlines can treat the transport contract as ended. The passenger may then have to buy a new ticket without the same rerouting protection.

Instead, request the earliest comparable route. That can involve Brussels Airlines, another Lufthansa Group carrier or another suitable airline when it materially improves arrival. Keep the proposed options and the airline's response. The refund-versus-rerouting guide compares the three Article 8 choices.

What Brussels Airlines must provide while you decide

Reasonable care is due during the qualifying wait, including food and refreshments proportionate to time. If departure shifts to the next day, accommodation and transport between Brussels Airport and the hotel may be required. Brussels Airlines states that refreshment access can appear through the QR code on the affected boarding pass and that hotel assistance is available during disruptions.

If no adequate voucher or room is offered, ask once through a practical channel, record the response and purchase a reasonable alternative. Retain itemised receipts and proof of payment. A simple airport meal and ordinary room are easier to recover than alcohol, luxury upgrades or purchases unrelated to waiting.

Care does not disappear because the reason is weather, ATC or another extraordinary event. The defence relates to fixed compensation, not the duty to look after stranded passengers.

Five hours does not itself guarantee EUR 250-600

Fixed delay payment is judged at final arrival and depends on cause. If the passenger abandons the journey before travelling, the facts may not produce the same final-arrival comparison as a completed delayed flight. Cancellation or denied-boarding rules can nevertheless apply if that was the real event.

Where the passenger continues and arrives at least three hours late, calculate EUR 250, EUR 400 or EUR 600 by distance. For a non-EU long-haul arrival between three and four hours late, the EUR 600 amount can be reduced to EUR 300. The airline may defeat the fixed sum only by proving an applicable defence.

Connections and used sectors

On one reservation, ask whether the entire trip still has purpose. If a passenger has flown from Africa to Brussels, waits more than five hours for a European connection and decides to return to the African starting point because the visit is no longer viable, Article 8 can engage reimbursement for relevant travel and a return flight. Document why the completed first sector no longer served the original plan.

Separate bookings are more difficult because each contract has its own destination. The five-hour event on one ticket does not automatically refund a separately purchased hotel, onward airline or event. Those losses may need insurance, package-travel or damages analysis.

Cash versus voucher

When reimbursement is chosen under current EU261, payment is due within seven days. A travel voucher requires genuine passenger agreement. Before accepting credit, inspect expiry, transferability, route restrictions and whether it purports to settle other claims.

Do not treat the adopted 2026 EU reform as current law. Its future procedural timetable was not applicable on 12 August 2026, and it does not change the decision required for today's disrupted journey.

A practical airport record

Save the original itinerary, boarding pass, delay notifications, app screenshots and every proposed replacement. Record when the five-hour threshold was expected and reached. If abandoning travel, send a clear message before leaving the airport or boarding another arrangement:

  1. identify the flight and booking;
  2. state that expected departure delay has reached at least five hours;
  3. explain that the journey no longer serves its purpose;
  4. choose reimbursement and request a return flight if relevant;
  5. ask how checked baggage will be returned;
  6. retain the airline's reply or evidence that no help was available.

Submit expense receipts separately from the ticket refund. If a fixed payment is also claimed, give its independent legal basis. Brussels Airlines' one-year contractual period for EU261 actions makes prompt written follow-up important.

FAQ

Does five hours mean Brussels Airlines automatically refunds me?

No. It gives a choice to abandon a journey that no longer serves its purpose. Communicate that choice and keep proof.

Can I take a refund and still demand rerouting?

Normally you choose between reimbursement and rerouting for the same disrupted transport. Selecting cash can end the duty to carry you.

Does the five-hour clock run from departure or arrival?

The reimbursement option is tied to a long delay at departure. Fixed compensation uses delay at the final destination.

Must Brussels Airlines provide food during extraordinary weather?

Yes, once the applicable care threshold is met. Weather may affect fixed compensation but not reasonable assistance.

Can used parts of my ticket be reimbursed?

They can when the completed travel no longer serves the original plan, with a return to the initial departure point where relevant.
