British Airways long-haul compensation for the USA, Canada, Asia and Africa

Reviewed on 10 August 2026. A long British Airways itinerary can produce up to GBP 520 under UK261 or EUR 600 under EC261 when the protected journey exceeds 3,500 km and a qualifying delay, cancellation or denied boarding occurs. Direction, final destination, one-ticket status and operating carrier decide more than the destination label.

Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:

British Airways is a UK carrier. That gives broad UK261 coverage to its outbound and inbound operations, while EC261 remains especially important for journeys beginning at an EU airport.

Verify the actual operator for every sector. A BA-marketed transatlantic service may be performed by American Airlines, Iberia or another partner, changing inbound coverage and the respondent.

Connections through Heathrow

On one booking, the final destination controls the long-delay analysis. A passenger travelling Glasgow-Heathrow-Tokyo can arrive at Heathrow only 50 minutes late, miss the onward flight and reach Tokyo the next day. The final arrival, not the feeder's isolated delay, drives compensation.

The Folkerts judgment confirms that a directly connecting itinerary can qualify even where the first departure delay does not itself reach the Article 6 threshold. Distance is normally measured by the direct great-circle arc from Glasgow to Tokyo.

Keep the original and replacement boarding passes, missed-flight gate time and BA rebooking. Heathrow transfer queues, terminal movement and security can be relevant facts, but a lawful connection claim still requires a causal delay attributable under the regulation.

If the tickets were purchased separately, the first contract may end at Heathrow. BA is not automatically responsible for a self-transfer booked independently, even if both flights carry BA numbers.

United States and Canada

London departures for New York, Boston, Washington, Miami, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Toronto or Vancouver ordinarily fall within UK261. The statutory amount depends on actual great-circle distance, not a broad "North America" category. Most major transatlantic services exceed 3,500 km, but calculate the specific airports.

For the return journey, a BA-operated flight arriving in the UK is normally covered by UK261. A US or Canadian airline operating a BA codeshare requires separate analysis; inbound UK rules cover EU or UK carriers, not every foreign operator.

US DOT refund rules and Canadian APPR can sometimes be relevant alongside UK law. Do not claim duplicate compensation for the same harm, and identify which carrier and regulation decided any payment. The BA article should not treat foreign systems as interchangeable with UK261.

Asia and Africa

BA-operated UK departures to long destinations in Asia or Africa receive UK261. Return flights to the UK can also qualify because BA is British. EU-origin passengers connecting in London may have EC261 protection for the complete through booking if the journey began at an EU airport.

Airspace restrictions, destination weather and security events can be genuine extraordinary circumstances on some long routes. BA must still establish the flight-specific causal chain and reasonable mitigation. A generic reference to regional disruption does not prove why one service arrived late after rerouting options became available.

Long-haul aircraft rotations can spread delay over several sectors. Ask whether the reason arose on the affected flight or earlier in the rotation, and what spare aircraft or crew options existed. Normal rotation planning remains part of airline operations.

Cancellation and alternative travel

After cancellation, the passenger chooses refund, earliest rerouting or later travel. Earliest rerouting can involve a partner or competitor where BA's own next seat would create a much longer delay. Cabin must be comparable, although exact product and seat availability can require practical compromise.

Do not accept a refund if travel remains necessary. Once refunded, the airline normally treats the transport duty as ended. If BA cannot offer a reasonable long-haul alternative and the passenger self-books, preserve written requests, available itineraries and the price evidence before purchase.

A replacement that reaches the destination within four hours can halve long-distance cancellation compensation. Short-notice rules also look at when BA notified the passenger and how early the substitute departed.

Overnight care and expenses

Long-haul disruption often creates an overnight stay. BA should provide accommodation, transport between the airport and hotel, reasonable meals and communication while the passenger waits for earliest rerouting. Extraordinary circumstances do not normally eliminate this support.

If BA fails to arrange it, choose a proportionate hotel and keep an itemised invoice. Save taxi or public-transport receipts and evidence that airport transport had stopped. Separate these costs from destination losses such as a missed cruise, prepaid safari or unused hotel; those are not ordinary UK261 care items.

The BA right-to-care guide explains waiting thresholds, while the expense guide covers evidence.

Premium cabins and downgrade

First, Club World and World Traveller Plus passengers receive the same fixed UK261 or EC261 amount as economy passengers. Fare and cabin do not raise GBP 520 or EUR 600.

If BA reroutes a passenger in a lower cabin, Article 10 can produce 75% reimbursement on an affected long flight. The percentage applies to the price of that flight, excluding taxes and charges not dependent on cabin, rather than the whole multi-sector ticket without allocation.

Downgrade can coexist with fixed delay or cancellation compensation because it addresses a different wrong. Record the original and flown cabin, booking class and sector fare. See the BA downgrade article.

Evidence for a long-haul claim

Save the complete ticket, all operating-carrier notices, cabin, booking class and every sector. Record final door-opening time in the destination's local time and UTC. Keep notice messages, rerouting offers and cause statements.

Calculate distance from first departure to final destination for a protected through journey. Show the amount and any reduction per passenger. Submit fixed compensation and itemised expenses separately so BA's response can be reconciled.

For an Avios or companion-voucher booking, preserve the points and cash breakdown. Public reward tickets can receive statutory protection, but ticket refunds have loyalty-specific mechanics.

FAQ

Does every BA flight to the USA qualify for GBP 520?

No. The route must be covered, exceed 3,500 km and satisfy the event and cause tests. A three-to-four-hour delay can reduce the UK amount to GBP 260.

Is a Canada-to-London BA flight protected?

Usually yes under UK261 when British Airways actually operates it, because it arrives in the UK on a UK carrier.

What if I miss my BA long-haul connection at Heathrow?

On one through booking, measure lateness at the final destination. Separate tickets normally do not combine into the same statutory journey.

Can First passengers claim more fixed compensation?

No. They use the same distance bands. A lower replacement cabin can create an additional percentage downgrade reimbursement.

Does airspace closure remove hotel rights?

It may defeat the fixed payment if BA proves the defence, but reasonable care generally continues while a passenger waits for rerouting.
