British Airways downgrade: reimbursement for First, Club World and cabins
Reviewed on 10 August 2026. If British Airways carries a passenger in a lower cabin than booked, current UK261 or EC261 rules can require reimbursement of 30%, 50% or 75% of the price of the affected flight within seven days. The right does not require delay, cancellation or airline fault and can exist alongside fixed disruption compensation.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:
Calculate only the downgraded sector. Under the Mennens judgment, if its price is not itemised, allocate the ticket price by the distance of that flight relative to the total journey. Exclude taxes and charges whose existence and amount do not depend on cabin.
What is a statutory downgrade?
| Change | Article 10 position |
|---|---|
| First to Club World | Lower cabin, so reimbursement can apply |
| Club World to World Traveller Plus | Lower class of service |
| Club Europe to Euro Traveller | Cabin downgrade |
| World Traveller Plus to World Traveller | Lower cabin |
| Different seat within Club World | Not a cabin downgrade by itself |
| Loss of paid seat selection in the same cabin | Contractual service refund, not Article 10 |
| Aircraft changes but booked cabin remains | No statutory downgrade merely from aircraft type |
The European Commission's current guidance distinguishes cabin class from benefits attached to a fare within the same class. Missing catering, lounge access or a chosen seat can support another complaint, but not automatically the percentage refund.
The reimbursement percentages
| Distance of affected flight | Reimbursement |
|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km | 30% of relevant flight price |
| 1,500-3,500 km | 50% of relevant flight price |
| Other longer qualifying flight | 75% of relevant flight price |
EC261 contains a special formulation for intra-EU journeys above 1,500 km, which uses 50%. Confirm the precise route rather than applying 75% to every flight beyond 3,500 km without checking the statutory category.
BA's own disruption page recognises partial refund for the downgraded sector and excludes taxes and charges. Its consumer distance wording should be checked against the governing regulation where a boundary is disputed.
Calculate the affected sector under Mennens
The Court of Justice decided in Mennens v Emirates that reimbursement concerns the price of the flight on which downgrade occurred. Where the ticket shows only a total price, use the proportion represented by the affected flight's distance over total distance the ticket entitled the passenger to travel.
Example: a passenger buys Paris-Heathrow-New York in Club World for a single base fare. BA carries Paris-Heathrow in Club but downgrades only Heathrow-New York to World Traveller. The 75% calculation applies to the allocated Heathrow-New York flight price, not automatically 75% of the complete return or package value.
A workable formula is:
allocated flight price x applicable percentage = downgrade reimbursement
If no sector fare appears, retain the e-ticket fare construction and ask BA for a price breakdown. Use great-circle distances consistently when an allocation is necessary.
Taxes, fees and carrier charges
Mennens excludes taxes and charges from the calculation when neither the obligation to pay them nor their amount depends on the booked cabin. Airport taxes commonly fit that description. A charge that varies with class may require different treatment.
Do not assume every line called a fee is excluded. Ask BA to identify each component and why it is cabin-independent. Carrier-imposed charges can be fact-sensitive because their amount may vary by fare or cabin.
Keep the original receipt and ticket breakdown. An unexplained refund based only on "fare difference" may not equal the statutory percentage.
Paid upgrades and Avios
A paid BA upgrade creates evidence of the cabin purchased for travel. Preserve the upgrade confirmation, amount, new booking class and ticket reissue. If BA later carries the passenger lower, request the Article 10 calculation and return of any separately unprovided service.
Avios upgrades and reward tickets are more complex because the ticket price can combine points, cash, taxes and carrier charges. A public loyalty ticket is not excluded from passenger protection, but converting the percentage into Avios or cash can be disputed. Ask BA for its calculation rather than promising one universal valuation.
The BA Avios disruption guide explains cash compensation and loyalty refunds separately.
Several passengers and several sectors
Reimbursement is calculated per affected passenger and downgraded flight. If three family members are moved from Club World to World Traveller on Heathrow-Toronto, each has a claim based on their ticket price allocation. One form may coordinate them, but the arithmetic must remain individual.
If BA downgrades both outbound and return, calculate each sector separately. If only the feeder is affected, do not apply a long-haul 75% percentage to the untouched onward cabin.
A child ticket discount affects its price base, unlike fixed UK261 compensation. Keep passenger-specific fare records.
Downgrade can coexist with delay or cancellation compensation
Article 10 reimburses lower-class carriage. Article 7 fixed compensation addresses qualifying delay, short-notice cancellation or denied boarding. A passenger rerouted ten hours late in economy instead of Club World can potentially claim both if each test is met.
Care expenses are another category. Hotel, meal and transfer receipts should not be deducted from the downgrade percentage. Likewise, a refund of paid seat selection does not settle the cabin reimbursement unless the agreement expressly and lawfully covers it.
Avoid double recovery for the same fare component. Ask BA to label each payment: statutory downgrade, ancillary-service refund, fixed compensation or expense reimbursement.
Evidence and claim
Keep the original e-ticket, ticket receipt, cabin, booking class, seat and upgrade documents. Obtain the replacement boarding pass showing the flown cabin. Photograph the cabin sign or seat where the boarding pass remains ambiguous, and ask gate staff for written confirmation.
Request the affected-sector price, tax breakdown and calculation. State the distance category and percentage. For one-price itineraries, provide the Mennens allocation and ask BA to correct any whole-ticket or fare-difference method that conflicts with it.
Use BA Customer Relations after travel. A downgrade may be arranged at the gate without an automatic refund, so do not wait indefinitely for the payment. The BA claim-form guide lists attachments.
This guide applies the current seven-day reimbursement rule on 10 August 2026. The adopted EU reform will later preserve the percentages, automate reimbursement within 14 days and codify sector allocation, but it is not yet applicable. Do not confuse that future 14-day payment period with the separate future nine-month claim request.
FAQ
Is First to Club World a British Airways downgrade?
Yes. It is carriage in a lower cabin even though Club World remains a premium product. The affected flight can attract percentage reimbursement.
Does losing my chosen Club World seat count?
Not as Article 10 downgrade if you remain in Club World. Seek return of the paid seat service or another contractual remedy.
Is 75% calculated on my entire return ticket?
No. Mennens limits the base to the downgraded flight. Allocate by sector distance if that flight price is not shown.
Can I claim downgrade and delay compensation together?
Potentially yes. They address different events, and each must satisfy its own legal conditions without duplicate recovery.
How is an Avios upgrade reimbursed?
The method can be disputed because points, cash and charges interact. Preserve the upgrade evidence and require BA to explain its valuation and legal basis.
