British Airways Gatwick disruption: BA Euroflyer, UK261 and rerouting
Reviewed on 10 August 2026. Many BA-branded short-haul services from Gatwick are operated by BA Euroflyer, a separate UK airline within the British Airways family. Confirm the operator on the itinerary, then use UK261 for a qualifying Gatwick departure. Delay, cancellation, care and rerouting rights are the same statutory types, but the respondent and London-airport transfer evidence require attention.

Gatwick claim checklist
| Item | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| "Operated by" entry | Distinguishes Euroflyer, BA Plc or a partner |
| Original airport and schedule | Prevents rebooking from obscuring facts |
| Final door-opening time | Measures delay |
| Cancellation notice | Applies the 14-day test |
| Heathrow or City alternative | Creates surface transfer questions |
| Hotel and meal receipts | Supports care reimbursement |

BA Euroflyer as operating airline
British Airways announced that BA Euroflyer obtained its own UK Air Operator's Certificate and operating licence in December 2022. BA's official partner information describes it as a wholly owned subsidiary operating UK domestic, European and North African services from Gatwick.
Where the itinerary says BA Euroflyer, name it as operating carrier. British Airways' conditions include Euroflyer within the collective customer wording, and the BA complaints channel can still be used, but legal identity should be accurate.
The booking confirmation is stronger evidence than the flight number alone. Preserve the line naming the operator, the ticket number and any later reissue. If disruption produces a replacement service, record both operators: the airline responsible for the original cancellation may differ from the airline that completes the journey. A boarding pass for the substitute flight does not erase the original contract or the first operator's decision. When the paperwork is unclear, ask BA in writing which licensed airline operated or was due to operate each sector and quote that answer in the claim.
An inbound BA code operated by another airline requires a fresh nationality test. The BA operating-carrier guide covers codeshare and wet lease.
Delay compensation from Gatwick
Every Gatwick departure is a UK departure, so UK261 normally applies regardless of operator nationality. Fixed payment requires final arrival at least three hours late and no proven extraordinary-circumstances defence.
The bands are GBP 220 up to 1,500 km, GBP 350 between 1,500 and 3,500 km, and GBP 520 above 3,500 km. Euroflyer's typical short-haul route must be measured individually; do not assume a destination's band from region name.
Record first door opening at destination. A flight may land within three hours but remain closed long enough to cross the threshold. Care begins at earlier waiting thresholds.
Cancellation and London alternatives
After cancellation, choose refund, earliest rerouting or later travel. BA may offer a Heathrow departure. Check whether surface transfer, baggage collection and new check-in make it a realistic earliest option.
The carrier should arrange or reimburse necessary transfer when rerouting changes airports in the same London region. Obtain written instruction. A passenger who independently chooses Heathrow for convenience may struggle to recover parking or car hire.
Ask BA to consider another Gatwick airline where it arrives sooner. Its commercial network does not define the full statutory rerouting duty.
Diversion into or away from Gatwick
A flight booked to Heathrow may divert to Gatwick, or a Gatwick service may land elsewhere. BA should complete transport to the booked airport or an agreed nearby destination. Final delay can run until arrival there.
Keep coach, rail or taxi receipts. If BA provides a transfer, record when it reaches the destination. Weather can justify the diversion without eliminating onward transport or care.
The BA diverted-flight guide explains alternate-airport timing.
Weather, ATC and airport causes
Gatwick disruption can arise from runway restrictions, weather, ATC, security or airport systems. BA Euroflyer can also face ordinary aircraft, crew or IT events. Require the event and causal timeline rather than accepting an airport name as the defence.
An external runway closure may remove fixed compensation. BA must still show reasonable mitigation, including rerouting. A routine Euroflyer technical defect remains within the normal technical-fault analysis.
If an earlier flight in the aircraft rotation was affected elsewhere, ask how that event reached Gatwick and what recovery was attempted.
Hotel and care
During qualifying waits, request food, communications, accommodation and hotel transport. Gatwick-area availability can tighten during widespread disruption. If BA provides no room, preserve failed requests and book a proportionate alternative.
Passengers living near another London airport can consider travel home and back, but safety and cost matter. Keep detailed receipts and do not include alcohol or destination losses in the care schedule.
Submit expenses separately from compensation. The BA expense guide provides a table.
Package-holiday considerations
Gatwick leisure routes can form part of a British Airways Holidays package. Contact the organiser as well as the operating airline when a cancellation changes hotel nights, transfers or trip duration.
The airline handles UK261 flight rights. British Airways Holidays handles package performance. ATOL 5985 concerns protected-package insolvency, not ordinary delay compensation.
Avoid double recovery for the same hotel or transfer. Use the BA Holidays article for separate claim schedules.
Evidence and escalation
Attach the original operator, Gatwick schedule, final arrival, cancellation notice and alternatives. State UK261 and the distance band. For an airport change, include transfer request and arrival at the booked airport.
If BA says British Airways Plc did not operate, ask it to confirm Euroflyer and process or route the claim correctly. If cause is disputed, request flight-specific evidence.
British Airways directs unresolved eligible complaints to CEDR. Check that the named operating entity and case fall within the scheme before filing.
FAQ
Is every BA Gatwick flight operated by BA Euroflyer?
No. Euroflyer operates many BA-branded services there, but the specific itinerary must confirm the current operator.
Does a Gatwick departure use UK261?
Yes in the normal case because it leaves a UK airport, regardless of whether Euroflyer or another airline operates.
Can BA move me to Heathrow after cancellation?
It can offer that rerouting if feasible. Necessary London-airport transfer should be arranged or funded and must fit check-in timing.
Who pays after a Heathrow flight diverts to Gatwick?
The operating carrier should complete transfer to Heathrow or another agreed nearby destination and assess delay at that endpoint.
Are BA Holidays rights the same as Euroflyer compensation?
No. The airline handles UK261; the package organiser addresses hotel, transfer and other combined services.
