British Airways delay over five hours: refund, return flight or travel
Reviewed on 10 August 2026. When a covered British Airways departure is delayed by at least five hours, a passenger who no longer wants to travel can choose reimbursement of the relevant ticket. If a through journey has already begun and no longer serves its original purpose, BA may also owe a return flight to the initial departure point. Continuing to travel preserves transport but gives up refund for the flown carriage.

Enter your route, date and type of disruption. We will check whether your case qualifies for a claim under EU 261/2004 or UK261.
What happened to your flight?
Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.
Choose the situation that applies to your flight:
The five-hour choice is separate from fixed compensation. A final arrival delay of three hours can create GBP or EUR payment, while the five-hour rule lets the passenger abandon the trip.
Decision table
| Passenger's decision | Result |
|---|---|
| Continue on delayed BA flight | No refund for carriage used; compensation and care remain possible |
| Abandon before departure | Refund of unused ticket portions |
| Journey already began but lost its purpose | Refund can include relevant used portions and return transport |
| Accept rerouting | BA continues carriage and care until replacement |
| Cancel voluntarily before threshold | Fare rules may apply instead |
Tell BA which option is selected and ask for written confirmation. Do not simply leave the airport while the booking remains active.
How the five hours are measured
Article 6 uses expected departure delay for the refund trigger. This differs from fixed delay compensation, which is normally assessed at arrival. A flight may wait five hours at Heathrow and later arrive four hours late; both rights require separate calculations.
Use the scheduled departure and BA's actual or expected departure. Record cancellation or boarding announcements. If BA repeatedly changes estimates, preserve screenshots showing when the five-hour point was reached.
The flight need not depart eventually for the choice to arise. If BA later cancels, the ordinary cancellation refund and rerouting options also apply.
Refund before travel starts
When the outbound service has not left, reimbursement can cover unused sectors on the same ticket. If the passenger booked a return as one ticket and the outbound trip is abandoned, the return can also be useless. State that the complete booking no longer serves the original plan and ask BA not to leave an active no-show chain.
BA's refund form warns that requesting reimbursement can cancel remaining flights for all passengers on the booking. Obtain consent and contact BA if only some passengers or sectors should be refunded.
An OTA may control ticket processing. Preserve requests to both the agent and BA if each redirects the passenger. The statutory choice should not be lost in accounting arrangements.
Journey already under way
Suppose a passenger flies Belfast-Heathrow and the BA Heathrow-San Francisco connection is delayed more than five hours. The business trip can no longer serve its purpose. On one booking, the passenger can seek refund of unused travel, relevant used portions and a return to Belfast at the earliest opportunity.
Explain why the journey is pointless, such as the event ending before arrival. This is stronger than a preference to go home. Ask BA to arrange the return rather than buying it silently.
If the flights were separate tickets, the first completed service is not automatically refundable. Insurance and contractual terms may be necessary.
Continue travelling or request rerouting
A passenger who still needs the destination should not choose refund. Ask BA to carry them on the delayed service or provide lawful rerouting if cancellation follows. Care continues during the waiting period.
At five hours, requesting a refund does not force every passenger to abandon. Family members can make different choices, but BA's online form may operate at booking level. Contact the airline to prevent accidental cancellation of another traveller's sectors.
If BA offers a voucher, compare it with money. The refund right is monetary unless a voucher is freely accepted. The BA refund-versus-voucher guide explains form consequences.
Fixed compensation remains separate
An ordinary technical problem can lead to both the five-hour refund and fixed compensation. The passenger does not have to arrive late after abandoning the flight, but long-delay compensation case law and facts require careful analysis when no carriage occurs. Cancellation or denied-boarding classification may offer the clearer route.
Where the passenger continues and reaches the final destination at least three hours late, use the ordinary delay test. UK261 amounts are GBP 220/350/520 and EC261 amounts are EUR 250/400/600, subject to distance, reduction and extraordinary circumstances.
Weather may defeat the fixed amount while leaving the five-hour reimbursement option and care intact. Do not let BA answer all remedies with one cause label.
Care before the choice
BA should provide meals and refreshments at the relevant threshold, communications, accommodation for overnight delay and hotel transport. Keep receipts where it does not.
Care normally ends after the passenger elects reimbursement because BA no longer has to carry them. Reasonable costs incurred before the choice can still be claimed. If BA must return the passenger to the initial departure point, care can continue while awaiting that flight.
Ask staff to time-stamp the refund decision and transport arrangement. The BA care article describes assistance.
Evidence and submission
Save the original ticket, delay updates, five-hour timestamp, passenger choice and any return-transport request. Explain which sectors were unused and why any completed portion lost its purpose.
Use BA's refund route with caution around remaining flights. Submit care expenses separately. For fixed compensation, retain the operating cause and appropriate event classification.
Reconcile the refund against fare, taxes, Avios and extras. A partial credit without explanation may not include all unused portions. If BA refuses because the flight eventually operated, state that the right was exercised after the five-hour threshold.
FAQ
Is the five-hour rule measured at departure or arrival?
It is a departure-delay refund trigger. Fixed compensation generally uses final arrival, so the two calculations should not be confused.
Can I take the refund and still fly later?
Not under the same refunded carriage right. After reimbursement, make a new booking or choose later rerouting instead before confirming.
Will BA refund my return flight too?
It can where the outbound and return are unused parts of one ticket and the trip is abandoned. Check the booking-level effect of the form.
What if I already flew to Heathrow?
On one through ticket, BA can owe a return to the initial point and refund where the onward delay makes the journey pointless.
Does weather remove the five-hour refund choice?
No. Extraordinary circumstances concern fixed compensation; reimbursement and care remain independently available under the current rules.
