BBN Airlines Turkiye flight compensation: ACMI passenger rights
Published: Updated:
Quick answer
A BBN Airlines Türkiye passenger flight can be covered by EU261 when it departs from the EU, by UK261 when it departs from the UK, and by SHY-YOLCU when the Turkish operator flies to or from Türkiye. A direct BBN-operated return from Türkiye to the EU or UK normally falls outside EU261 and UK261, while Turkish rules may apply. BBN frequently provides ACMI capacity for other airlines, so the company that sold or managed the booking may be different from the carrier operating the aircraft. Confirm both roles before choosing the claim recipient.

Enter the complete route, date, operating airline and disruption. We will check whether EU261, UK261, Turkish SHY or another passenger-rights framework may be relevant.
What happened to your flight?
Choose the situation that applies. Eligibility and currency depend on the route, operating airline, disruption and applicable law.
Choose the situation that applies to your flight:
BBN Airlines Türkiye is not the similarly named Indonesian airline. Its legal page identifies BBN Hava Yolları ve Taşımacılık Anonim Şirketi, a Turkish company within Avia Solutions Group. BBN's official history says it received a Turkish Air Operator Certificate in March 2023 and began with passenger aircraft. Its services include passenger ACMI and charter work as well as cargo operations. That mixed model means an aircraft or cargo reference alone cannot determine whether a traveller had a passenger claim.
The charter and holiday-flight guide explains how ACMI changes the practical complaint path. Use the airline directory when another airline appears as seller or replacement operator.
Which company operated and sold the flight?
BBN's own contact page gives an unusually clear warning for certain ACMI flights: BBN supplies aircraft and cockpit and cabin crew, but does not handle ground services, ticket sales or booking management. It tells passengers to contact the airline from which they bought the ticket for seat, baggage, booking and aftersales changes. That is important, but it does not mean the selling airline automatically becomes the operating carrier for every statutory question.
Collect the e-ticket, the complete “operated by” line, boarding pass, airport notices and any aircraft-substitution email. If the document names BBN Airlines Türkiye as operator, preserve that exact wording. If it names another BBN company or an unrelated airline, do not shorten the identity to “BBN” without checking the legal entity.
The tour operator, ticket seller, marketing carrier and operating carrier can each have distinct duties. A fixed passenger-rights claim normally centres on the operating carrier. Booking changes or a voluntary cancellation may remain with the seller, and a package organiser may have separate obligations.
Which rules cover the route?
This table concerns direct passenger flights actually operated by BBN Airlines Türkiye. It does not turn a cargo flight into a passenger service or decide a complex connection.
| BBN Airlines Türkiye journey | EU261 | UK261 | SHY-YOLCU |
|---|---|---|---|
| EU airport to Türkiye | Can apply because departure is in the EU | Normally not | Can also apply because BBN is Turkish |
| Türkiye to an EU airport | Normally not because BBN is not an EU carrier | Normally not | Can apply |
| UK airport to Türkiye | Normally not | Can apply because departure is in the UK | Can also apply |
| Türkiye to a UK airport | Normally not | Normally not because BBN is not a UK or EU carrier | Can apply |
| Domestic passenger flight in Türkiye | No | No | Can apply |
| Passenger flight outside all three territories | Not from that route alone | Not from that route alone | Not from that route alone |
The return is tested separately even on one booking. Citizenship, residence, booking website and payment currency do not expand the regulations. For a connection, establish whether the sectors form one protected reservation and identify the final destination; a self-transfer normally remains a separate journey. Consult the EU261 and UK261 route guide before treating a UK or EU transit as automatic coverage.
Other national rules may apply at another airport. They require their own test. The Montreal Convention can address proven delay loss in qualifying international carriage, but its liability limit is not an automatic cash payment.
Delayed BBN Airlines Türkiye flights
For EU261 and UK261, fixed delay compensation generally depends on reaching the protected final destination at least three hours late. Care can begin earlier according to distance and waiting time. Record the original timetable, gate information, the time passengers could leave the aircraft and the ultimate arrival for a protected connection.
The airline may rely on extraordinary circumstances only if it identifies an external or qualifying event and shows that reasonable measures could not avoid the result. “Operational reasons” does not, by itself, answer that test. Ask the selling airline and BBN to preserve the operational explanation, but direct the formal statutory demand according to the final operator analysis.
Turkey's 10 December 2024 SHY-YOLCU amendment introduced a compensation route for arrival at least three hours late for technical or operational reasons. It has its own date and cause requirements and should not be projected backwards onto earlier flights.
Cancelled BBN Airlines Türkiye flights
Under an applicable passenger-rights regime, cancellation normally gives a choice between reimbursement and rerouting. Fixed compensation is separate. Under EU261 and UK261, notice at least 14 days before departure normally removes the additional fixed payment; shorter notice still requires replacement timing, cause and other conditions to be assessed.
In an ACMI arrangement, the selling airline may issue the cancellation notice and arrange a replacement. Keep that notice and evidence that BBN was originally due to operate. If the seller changes only the aircraft operator but the journey continues, analyse the actual disruption rather than calling every operator swap a cancellation.
Denied boarding on a BBN flight
Involuntary denied boarding may be compensable where a passenger has a confirmed reservation, correct documents and arrives by the specified deadlines. A refusal for safety, security, health or travel-document reasons is not the same as overbooking. Ask whether volunteers were requested and obtain a written explanation.
The seller may manage check-in and ground handling on an ACMI service. Record the company and staff channel used, but do not assume the ground handler is the operating carrier. A voluntary voucher agreement should state the benefit, replacement journey and any restrictions before acceptance.
Compensation, refund and expenses
EU261 uses EUR 250, EUR 400 and EUR 600 bands. The relevant category depends on the protected journey; an intra-EU flight longer than 1,500 km generally carries EUR 400 rather than EUR 600. UK261 uses GBP 220, GBP 350 and GBP 520, with a possible reduction to GBP 260 for a long-distance arrival delay between three and four hours.
SHY-YOLCU provides EUR 100 for a qualifying domestic flight and EUR 250, EUR 400 or EUR 600 for an international flight, paid in Turkish lira using the applicable Central Bank selling rate on the payment date. Do not select the maximum merely because BBN used an A321 or the service crossed several countries.
Fixed compensation, unused-fare reimbursement and care expenses are separate claims. Necessary meals, a reasonable hotel and airport transfers can be recoverable where the carrier should have supplied care. Keep itemised receipts. Disclose any compensation already received and avoid demanding two full statutory awards for the same event without an overlap analysis.
Charter, package holiday and wet lease
ACMI means aircraft, crew, maintenance and insurance are supplied to a customer airline. BBN describes this as a core service and also offers charters. In practice, the passenger may have no direct booking relationship with BBN even though BBN operates the aircraft. That makes accurate labelling essential.
Ask four questions: who sold the ticket, who organised any package, whose flight number was marketed, and who actually operated the aircraft? Booking amendments and ancillary purchases can remain with the seller, while statutory compensation can focus on the operator. A package claim can run separately from either.
BBN also carries cargo. Do not infer a consumer passenger route from a fleet list, airport sighting or general claim that the airline operates in many countries. The particular service must have carried the claimant under a confirmed passenger reservation.
How to complain and escalate
First submit a structured written claim through the party's current official channel. BBN publishes a passenger contact address, while its ACMI notice directs booking and aftersales matters to the ticket seller. Send the statutory disruption claim according to the operating-carrier analysis and copy the seller where the roles remain unclear.
Include passenger names, reservation, route, final destination, date, flight number, operated-by evidence, scheduled and actual arrival, notice, reason given and all previous payments. Separate compensation, reimbursement and expenses. Keep proof of submission.
EU261 escalation depends on the competent departure-country body or dispute route. UK261 escalation requires checking whether the actual operator participates in approved ADR; PACT may otherwise offer a non-binding review. Under SHY-YOLCU, approach the airline first and use SHGM's passenger-rights system if no answer arrives within ten days or the response is insufficient. Court forum and time limits require jurisdiction-specific advice.
Check the actual operator
Use the flight compensation calculator with the complete route and the company named as operating the aircraft. Test outbound and return separately. The result is a screening indication and cannot replace the documents or cause assessment.
FAQ
Is BBN Airlines Türkiye the same as BBN Airlines Indonesia?
No. This guide concerns the Turkish company BBN Hava Yolları ve Taşımacılık A.Ş. Verify the full legal name on the flight documents.
Why does BBN tell some passengers to contact another airline?
On certain ACMI flights, BBN supplies aircraft and crew while the selling airline manages tickets, bookings and aftersales. Different claims may therefore go to different parties.
Does EU261 cover a BBN flight from Türkiye to the EU?
Normally not when the Turkish company operates the direct flight. SHY-YOLCU may apply instead.
Can a cargo operator owe passenger compensation?
BBN conducts both passenger and cargo activity. A passenger claim requires evidence that the disrupted service was a passenger flight carrying the claimant; the wider cargo business is not decisive.
Can both UK261 and SHY-YOLCU cover a UK departure to Türkiye?
Potentially. UK261 can attach to the UK departure and SHY to a Turkish carrier flying to Türkiye. Any overlap and previous payment must be assessed.
