American Airlines refund, voucher or travel credit: which should you choose?
Choose cash reimbursement when American cancels or significantly changes travel you no longer accept; choose rerouting when reaching the destination remains essential; accept a voucher or travel credit only after comparing restrictions and settlement wording. A refund is separate from EU261 or UK261 compensation on covered Europe-origin or UK-origin flights.

Four different remedies
| Remedy | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Cash reimbursement | Returns unused ticket value |
| Rerouting | Completes journey to destination |
| Travel credit or voucher | Voluntary future value with conditions |
| Fixed compensation | Statutory payment for qualifying disruption |
Receiving one does not automatically answer all others. A passenger can take rerouting and still claim compensation. Full refund and free replacement for the same unused transportation are normally alternatives.
Covered European cancellation
After American cancels a flight departing the EU, EEA, Switzerland or UK, the passenger should be offered reimbursement or rerouting. Care applies while waiting for earliest rerouting. Fixed compensation can additionally arise based on notice, replacement timing and cause.
American cannot reject EU261 simply because it is a US airline on a Paris or Madrid departure. UK261 similarly protects Heathrow departures.
US-origin American cancellation
An American-operated flight from the US to Europe normally falls outside fixed EU261 and UK261 compensation. DOT rules can nevertheless require automatic refund when American cancels or significantly changes the flight and the passenger declines alternatives.
Current processing is generally seven business days for credit-card purchases and twenty calendar days for other payment methods. The refund covers unused fare and eligible ancillary services. It is not a standard inconvenience award.
This makes cash-refund content useful without pretending that New York-Paris on American is a EUR 600 case.
Refund or rerouting?
Choose refund when the trip has lost its purpose, no acceptable route exists or the passenger prefers not to travel. Choose rerouting when arrival remains important and American can provide an acceptable alternative.
Before selecting refund, check whether later return or companion segments will be cancelled. Ask American to document which coupons remain active. A no-show is not the same as a deliberate refund election.
If the journey is partly completed and the remaining travel no longer serves its purpose, European rules can allow reimbursement of relevant parts and a return to the first departure point. Explain the lost purpose.
Evaluate a travel credit
Compare:
- expiry and booking deadline;
- eligible traveller;
- transferability;
- route or airline restrictions;
- residual-value treatment;
- currency;
- blackout or fare-difference rules;
- release of statutory claims.
A credit worth slightly more than cash can be attractive only if it is realistically usable. Do not accept it under pressure where cash is mandatory.
Flight Credit, Trip Credit and other labels
American uses different credit types and terms can change. Rely on the document issued, not an old online explanation. Save the number, expiry and passenger name.
If American substitutes credit without consent, request cash in writing and preserve the original payment method. Do not spend the credit while disputing its issue unless advised, because use can imply acceptance.
Ancillary refunds
Request unused paid seats, baggage, priority services and upgrades where the service was not provided. List each receipt. A cabin downgrade can have a statutory percentage remedy beyond simple return of a seat fee.
Award tickets require mileage redeposit and tax refund. Missing miles and fixed compensation are different requests.
Compensation after refund
A covered Paris-Dallas cancellation with two days' notice can support full unused-ticket refund and EUR 600 per passenger if American cannot prove a defence. The refund restores what the passenger paid; compensation addresses the qualifying disruption.
For Dallas-Paris operated by American, the cash refund may be due after cancellation and rejection of alternatives, but EUR 600 normally is not.
The American compensation pillar explains the directional test.
Evidence and channel
Save the ticket receipt, original payment method, cancellation or significant-change notice, offered alternative, rejection and unused coupon status. Screenshot any screen offering only credit.
Use American's refund portal for ticket reimbursement. Use Customer Relations for fixed compensation and care expenses. If an OTA issued the ticket, the seller may service the refund while American remains responsible for an eligible operating claim.
Partial use and companion bookings
When only one direction is cancelled, identify each unused coupon and do not request reimbursement for flights already taken unless the completed travel lost its purpose under the applicable European rule. A round-trip price may not divide evenly, so ask for fare construction rather than simply halving the total.
Passengers on the same reservation can make different choices. One traveller may accept rerouting while another abandons the journey, provided American records each ticket correctly. Preserve individual consent and new ticket numbers.
If a companion's credit is issued in the lead passenger's account, verify who can use it and whether transfer is allowed. A nominal value is not equivalent to cash when the intended traveller cannot redeem it.
Save the original credit terms because later website wording may differ from the conditions attached when it was issued.
Examples
Madrid-Miami cancelled: passenger rejects travel and requests cash. EU261 refund is due; a separate short-notice compensation claim can also exist.
Miami-Madrid cancelled: passenger rejects next-day travel. DOT refund can be due, but American operation from the US normally carries no EU261 fixed amount.
Heathrow-New York rerouted same day: passenger accepts travel and later claims eligible UK261 compensation. Full ticket refund is normally not due for used transportation.
Voucher offered after weather cancellation: fixed payment may be excluded, but cash refund or rerouting and care choices remain on covered departure.
FAQ
Must I accept an American travel credit?
No when law entitles you to cash. Credit should be a voluntary informed choice.
Can I receive refund and EUR 600?
Yes on a covered cancellation when separate refund and fixed-compensation conditions are met.
Can I receive refund after taking the replacement flight?
Normally not for transportation accepted and used. A separate compensation claim can remain.
Does DOT refund law pay for inconvenience?
No. It returns unused ticket and ancillary value after cancellation or significant change rejected by the passenger.
What if an OTA issued my American ticket?
The OTA can handle ticket servicing, while the operating airline remains central to statutory compensation. Keep both case references.
