American Airlines Heathrow delay or cancellation compensation

An American Airlines flight departing London Heathrow can qualify under UK261 for GBP 220, GBP 350 or GBP 520 after eligible delay, cancellation or involuntary denied boarding. American is a US carrier, but UK departure is enough. The return American-operated flight from the US to Heathrow normally does not receive fixed UK261 compensation.

What happened to your flight?

Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:

Check an American Heathrow departure with final destination, operator and actual arrival.

Heathrow direction test

American-operated journeyUK261 result
Heathrow to New YorkCovered departure
Heathrow to Dallas with one-ticket connectionCovered journey can reach final destination
New York to HeathrowNormally no fixed UK261 payment
Dallas to HeathrowNormally no fixed UK261 payment
US-Heathrow AA code operated by BAUK carrier operation can be covered

An AA number does not identify the operator. Save “operated by American Airlines” or the partner name.

Delayed Heathrow departure

Final arrival normally must be at least three hours late. Arrival is generally when a door opens and passengers can disembark, not runway touchdown.

Most nonstop Heathrow-US routes exceed 3,500 km. A three-to-four-hour arrival can produce GBP 260 after the 50% long-distance reduction. At four hours or more, GBP 520 is generally the starting amount if cause qualifies.

On one ticket to a later US city, measure at the final destination. A two-hour arrival at Dallas that causes a missed connection and six-hour final delay can support the top UK band.

Cancellation at Heathrow

American should offer reimbursement or earliest rerouting and provide care. Fixed compensation depends on notice, alternative timing and extraordinary circumstances.

Notice at least fourteen days before departure normally removes fixed cancellation payment. Under fourteen days, preserve replacement departure and final arrival. A same-day cancellation for ordinary operational reasons is a strong candidate.

Accepting rerouting does not automatically waive compensation. A voluntary travel credit requires separate consent.

Meals, hotel and transport

On a covered Heathrow departure, American should provide meals and communications according to the wait. Overnight rerouting can require hotel and transport between Heathrow and accommodation.

This care remains during severe weather or ATC restrictions even if fixed GBP 520 is excluded. Ask for vouchers first. If adequate help is not available, keep itemised receipts for reasonable necessities.

Do not assume a destination hotel or travel insurance replaces American's statutory duty.

Terminals and same-day information

Terminal assignments and operating arrangements can change. Use American's current app, Heathrow displays and official airport information on the travel date rather than relying on an old article. Record the terminal and service desk actually used.

For a partner rerouting, confirm departure terminal, ticket reissue, baggage transfer and check-in deadline. A reservation display without a valid new ticket can fail at the gate.

British Airways codeshare

American and British Airways sell each other's transatlantic services. On Heathrow departures, either operator can be covered; the operated-by line identifies the statutory respondent.

On inbound US-Heathrow, operator changes scope. BA operation can fall within UK261; American operation normally does not. A BA marketing code on an American aircraft is not enough.

Read the American codeshare guide before choosing a form.

Causes at a busy airport

Weather, ATC restrictions, airport closure, security events and external strikes can be extraordinary. American should show specific causation and reasonable measures. General references to “Heathrow congestion” or “operational reasons” are insufficiently precise.

Routine technical faults, ordinary crew planning and internal rotation problems are not automatically exempt. Compare airport notices and the aircraft's prior operation without assuming every nearby flight had identical constraints.

Evidence before leaving Heathrow

Save:

  • complete ticket and operated-by line;
  • original and replacement boarding passes;
  • scheduled and actual final arrival;
  • cancellation notice timestamp;
  • cause messages and gate announcements;
  • rebooking options;
  • voucher and hotel requests;
  • itemised receipts;
  • final door-opening evidence.

Heathrow examples

Heathrow-Miami, 4h 35m late after routine technical defect: UK261 covers the American departure. GBP 520 per eligible passenger can be due.

Heathrow-New York cancelled during runway closure: refund/rerouting and care remain; the proved extraordinary event can remove fixed compensation.

Heathrow-Dallas-Phoenix, one ticket: a missed connection leads to final arrival seven hours late. Measure at Phoenix and assess UK261 cause.

New York-Heathrow, American operated: fixed UK261 normally does not apply. If the passenger rejects a cancellation alternative, use DOT refund rules.

Claim format

Write: “American operated this flight departing London Heathrow, so UK261 applies. Final door opening at [destination] was [time], [minutes] late.” Add amount per passenger, cause challenge and expenses separately.

Use the American UK departure guide for scope and the GBP/EUR amount guide for calculation.

Local escalation preparation

Keep American's final response and original submission date. Any UK escalation should use the current competent dispute or court route and applicable limitation rules. Do not assume that a regulator pays compensation directly.

As of 14 August 2026, future EU nine-month procedure is not the current UK claim deadline. Apply UK law in force.

Missed positioning and separate tickets

A passenger who independently books travel to Heathrow bears the risk of that separate positioning journey unless another contract or insurance covers it. UK261 for the American flight does not normally reimburse a missed departure caused by an unrelated train or flight.

Arrive by American's check-in and gate deadlines and preserve proof. If a protected same-ticket feeder operated by British Airways is delayed, the connection analysis can be different and should use the complete reservation.

Baggage at Heathrow

Report missing or damaged checked baggage before leaving the arrivals area and obtain the carrier file reference. Baggage follows Montreal Convention rules, not the GBP 520 table. An inbound American flight outside fixed UK261 can still support a valid baggage claim.

FAQ

Does UK261 cover American from Heathrow?

Yes. Any airline operating a UK departure can fall within UK261.

How much is a long Heathrow delay worth?

GBP 520 is the top band, with possible reduction to GBP 260 when long-distance arrival is between three and four hours late.

Does weather remove hotel rights?

No on a covered Heathrow disruption. It can remove fixed compensation while care remains.

Does New York to Heathrow on American qualify?

Normally not for fixed UK261 compensation. Check whether British Airways actually operated the segment.

Is the connection measured at Heathrow or final US city?

On one protected reservation leaving Heathrow, measure delay at the final ticketed destination.
