American Airlines flights from the UK: when UK261 applies
UK261 applies to American Airlines flights departing the United Kingdom even though American is a US carrier. A qualifying delay, short-notice cancellation or involuntary denied boarding can therefore produce GBP 220, GBP 350 or GBP 520 per passenger. The reverse American-operated flight from the United States into the UK is normally outside fixed UK261 compensation.

Direction decides the first result
| American-operated route | UK261 position |
|---|---|
| London Heathrow to New York | Covered departure |
| Heathrow to Dallas with onward travel on one ticket | Covered journey can reach final destination |
| Manchester to the US if American operates the flight | Covered departure |
| New York to Heathrow | Normally no fixed UK261 payment |
| AA-coded New York-Heathrow operated by British Airways | UK carrier operation can be covered inbound |
Residence, citizenship and ticket currency do not control scope. An American passenger leaving London receives the same territorial protection as a UK passenger. A UK resident starting in Chicago does not gain UK261 merely through residence.
Delay amounts and timing
UK261 delay compensation uses current bands of GBP 220, GBP 350 and GBP 520. The basic band depends on distance. American's UK-US services usually fall in the longest category, but final arrival and cause still decide payment.
A delay normally must reach three hours at the final ticketed destination. For long-distance arrival between three and four hours late, the amount can be GBP 260 rather than GBP 520. At four hours or more, the full top band is normally the starting point.
Arrival is generally measured when at least one aircraft door opens and passengers can leave. If Heathrow departure connects in Philadelphia to another US city on one ticket, measure at the last destination rather than only the first US airport.
Cancellation from a UK airport
American should offer reimbursement or rerouting after cancellation, with care during the wait. Fixed payment can additionally arise when notice was fewer than 14 days before departure and American cannot rely on compliant replacement timing or extraordinary circumstances.
Preserve the first notification. When notice is seven to thirteen days before travel, examine whether the alternative departs no more than two hours early and arrives less than four hours late. Under seven days, examine the tighter one-hour-early and two-hour-late window.
Accepting rerouting does not automatically settle compensation. A voluntary travel credit is different, so read its terms before giving up cash rights.
Care applies even during extraordinary events
On a covered UK departure, American should provide meals and refreshments appropriate to waiting time, communications, and hotel accommodation plus airport transport when an overnight stay is necessary. Genuine severe weather can exclude fixed compensation but does not simply remove care.
Ask for vouchers and accommodation before self-funding. If adequate help is unavailable, keep chat records, photographs of closed desks and itemised receipts. Reasonable necessity is easier to prove than luxury spending.
At a departure delay of at least five hours, a passenger who no longer wishes to travel can choose reimbursement under the UK regime. Document that choice before leaving.
Operating carrier and Heathrow partnerships
American coordinates transatlantic services with British Airways and other partners. An AA code does not prove American operation. Find the words “operated by” in the confirmation.
This distinction is crucial inbound. New York-Heathrow operated by American normally sits outside fixed UK261 compensation. The same route operated by British Airways can be covered because BA is a UK carrier. A British Airways code operated by American remains an American operation.
For a complete comparison, see American Airlines codeshare compensation.
Causes and proof
Routine technical issues, ordinary crew-planning failures and internal operational decisions are not automatically extraordinary. American should disclose the specific event and reasonable measures taken.
Severe weather, air-traffic restrictions, airport closure, security events or some external strikes can qualify as extraordinary. The carrier must connect the event to the particular disruption. A general reference to congestion at Heathrow does not prove why one flight arrived late.
Keep the original and revised itineraries, every boarding pass, operated-by line, final door-opening evidence, cancellation messages and expense receipts. If the reason changes between airport announcements and the written refusal, preserve both versions.
Why a US refund is not GBP 520
For an American-operated inbound flight outside UK261, US DOT rules may still require a refund if the airline cancels or significantly changes the flight and the passenger rejects alternatives. That remedy returns unused ticket value. It does not normally award GBP 520 for inconvenience after a completed delay.
This honest distinction helps direct strong claims correctly. A Heathrow departure with a qualifying controllable disruption is a fixed-compensation lead. A Miami-Heathrow American delay is usually a service or contract issue unless the actual operator changes the analysis.
Read US-to-Europe American rights before claiming on the inbound direction.
Worked examples
Heathrow-Dallas, 4h 40m late after an ordinary aircraft defect: UK261 covers departure. Subject to cause evidence, GBP 520 per eligible passenger can be due.
Heathrow-New York, cancellation one day before travel: American offers arrival the next evening and cites “operational reasons.” Reimbursement or rerouting and care apply; a fixed claim is realistic unless American proves a lawful defence.
Chicago-Heathrow, 5h late, American operated: fixed UK261 compensation normally does not apply. Check DOT refund only if the passenger rejected cancelled or significantly changed travel, and examine any recoverable contractual costs.
Boston-Heathrow operated by BA under AA code: British Airways is the operating carrier. Inbound UK261 can apply, so the claim should be directed using that operator fact.
A clear claim opening
Use language such as: “The disrupted flight departed London Heathrow and was operated by American Airlines. UK261 applies to departures from the United Kingdom on any airline. Final arrival was 4 hours 18 minutes late.” Follow with the amount, cause, passenger list and evidence.
Do not describe the flight as EU261 merely because older templates use that term. Current UK departures should be pleaded under UK261 and in pounds.
FAQ
Does UK261 cover American Airlines from Heathrow?
Yes. Departure from the UK is enough to bring an American-operated flight within territorial scope.
Can I claim GBP 520 for New York to London on American?
Normally no, because American is not a UK or EU carrier and the flight starts outside the UK. Check the actual operator.
What is the long-distance amount for 3 hours 30 minutes?
It can be GBP 260 because the top band may be reduced by 50% when arrival is between three and four hours late.
Are hotel and meals due after a weather cancellation?
They can be on a covered UK departure. Extraordinary circumstances may remove fixed compensation, not the underlying care obligation.
Should I claim in euros or pounds?
Use pounds for a UK261 departure. An EU departure is normally assessed under EU261 and its euro bands.
