American Airlines delayed or lost baggage claim

Report delayed American Airlines baggage immediately, obtain the 13-character file reference, keep tags and claim reasonable essential purchases in writing within the applicable international deadline. Baggage uses the Montreal Convention, not EU261's EUR 250-600 table. A US-origin flight can therefore support a baggage claim even when European fixed flight compensation is unavailable.

What happened to your flight?

Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:

First actions at the airport

  1. Go to American or the handling carrier's baggage desk before leaving.
  2. File the delayed-bag report.
  3. Obtain the 13-character file reference.
  4. Check delivery address and contact details.
  5. Keep baggage tag and boarding pass.
  6. Photograph the report and any damaged items.
  7. Ask how to update the claim after five days.

An airport report starts tracing, but a later written monetary claim may still be required.

Do not request EUR 600 merely because baggage arrived days late. Claim proven baggage loss and purchases under the Convention while separately assessing the flight.

Reasonable essential purchases

Buy items reasonably needed until the bag arrives: basic clothing, toiletries and necessary replacement equipment. The appropriate amount depends on destination, delay length, trip purpose and what the passenger had available.

Avoid luxury replacements or buying the entire bag contents immediately. Reuse what can be reused and keep itemised receipts. Explain unusual necessities, such as formal clothing for a documented event or essential child equipment.

American may apply depreciation or question whether items remain useful after delivery. A concise necessity note helps.

The twenty-one-day written deadline

For international baggage delay, the Montreal Convention generally requires written complaint within twenty-one days from the date the bag is delivered. Do not count from the flight date when delivery occurs later.

Submit receipts and loss details promptly through American's baggage process. Keep confirmation. The airport file reference alone may not contain the monetary demand.

If the bag never arrives, American's procedure treats prolonged tracing and loss claims separately. American currently directs passengers with bags delayed five or more days to provide additional details online.

When a bag is treated as lost

The Convention generally treats baggage as lost after twenty-one days or when the carrier admits loss. Do not wait indefinitely to assemble proof of contents.

Create a list showing item, brand, approximate purchase date, original price, current value and supporting receipt or photograph. Claims usually reflect proven value, not replacement cost of every item as new.

Do not exaggerate contents. Consistency with baggage weight, trip length and purchase history improves credibility.

Current liability ceiling

American's international liability information states the Montreal Convention baggage limit at 1,519 Special Drawing Rights per passenger, subject to legal conditions and proof. This is a ceiling, not an automatic payment.

Passengers who made a special declaration of interest and paid any required fee can have a different limit. Ordinary valuable items may also be excluded or limited under carrier terms, especially in checked baggage.

Which airline handles a codeshare bag?

Report to the carrier at the final airport and preserve which airline operated each segment. Under Convention rules for successive carriage, claims can involve the first, last or responsible carrier depending on circumstances.

An AA code operated by British Airways or Iberia does not remove baggage rights. Keep both American and partner file references if transferred.

Delivery and transport

Confirm whether American will deliver the bag. If the passenger must collect it, ask about reasonable transport cost and keep receipts. Record the delivery date and condition immediately.

Open the bag promptly. If it arrives damaged or items are missing, photograph and submit the separate damage complaint within the shorter deadline.

The damaged baggage guide explains that process.

Evidence pack

Keep:

  • e-ticket and boarding passes;
  • baggage tag and checked-bag receipt;
  • 13-character file reference;
  • delivery tracking and date;
  • itemised purchase receipts;
  • explanation of necessity;
  • contents inventory and proof of ownership;
  • photographs before and after travel where available;
  • written claim and acknowledgement;
  • any partner-airline correspondence.

Redact unrelated card transactions but retain merchant, date and amount.

Examples

Madrid-Dallas bag arrives four days late: the flight starts in the EU, but baggage purchases use Montreal rules. A separate EU261 claim exists only if the flight disruption itself qualifies.

Dallas-Paris bag delayed: American operation from the US normally has no EU261 fixed payment, yet reasonable baggage expenses can still be claimed internationally.

Family's one suitcase delayed: allocate proven contents to the passengers who owned them and avoid applying the ceiling as an automatic sum for every traveller.

Bag arrives after twenty-three days: it may already be legally treated as lost; record delivery and inspect condition before resolving the claim.

Claim wording

State the file reference, delivery date, number of delayed days and attached expense table. For loss, include contents valuation and requested total under the Convention.

Use American's baggage process, not the ordinary flight-compensation form. Keep any EU261 or UK261 demand in a separate case.

Home arrival versus outbound delay

Essential-purchase claims are usually stronger when baggage is delayed away from home because the passenger lacks normal belongings. A bag delayed on the return home can still cause proven loss, but replacing items already available at home is harder to justify.

Explain the destination and what alternatives existed. If specialist work, medical or child equipment was inaccessible at home, document the concrete need rather than assuming the route direction decides everything.

When American delivers only part of a family's baggage, allocate purchases to the people whose bags were missing and identify shared items once.

FAQ

Is delayed baggage worth EUR 600?

Not under EU261 simply because the bag was late. Claim proven loss and expenses under Montreal Convention rules.

How quickly should I report the bag?

Report at the airport before leaving where possible and obtain American's 13-character file reference.

What is the written expense deadline?

For international delayed baggage, generally twenty-one days after the bag is delivered.

Can I buy replacement clothing?

Yes when reasonably necessary and proportionate. Keep itemised receipts and explain the trip context.

Can a US-origin flight have a baggage claim?

Yes. Montreal baggage rights are separate from EU261 and UK261 territorial coverage.
