American Airlines EUR 600 or GBP 520 long-haul compensation
An American-operated long-haul flight can qualify for EUR 600 when it departs the EU, EEA or Switzerland, or GBP 520 when it departs the United Kingdom and arrives at least four hours late for a non-exempt reason. Three-to-four-hour long-distance delay can reduce the amount by half. American-operated flights beginning in the US normally receive neither European maximum.

Maximum-value routes and the inbound trap
| American-operated journey | Potential maximum |
|---|---|
| Paris to Dallas | EUR 600 |
| Madrid to Miami | EUR 600 |
| Dublin to Charlotte | EUR 600 |
| London to New York | GBP 520 |
| Dallas to Paris | Normally EUR 0 under EU261 |
| New York to London | Normally GBP 0 under UK261 |
The last two rows may still have refund or baggage remedies. They are not fixed-compensation leads unless the actual operator or continuous journey facts change the legal scope.
Requirements for the full amount
For delay, confirm:
- the protected journey departs Europe or the UK;
- American is the operating carrier, or identify the actual partner;
- the distance sits in the longest band;
- final arrival is at least four hours late for the full maximum;
- the disruption was not caused by proven extraordinary circumstances;
- the passenger had a confirmed reservation and complied with check-in requirements.
For cancellation, the full amount can arise with short notice and late replacement arrival, subject to cause and reduction rules. Involuntary denied boarding can also use the top distance band.
Why three hours may pay only half
On a journey over 3,500 kilometres, arrival between three and four hours late can permit a 50% reduction. Under EU261 the potential result is EUR 300; under UK261 it is GBP 260. The exact door-opening time matters.
At four hours, the full EUR 600 or GBP 520 is generally the starting amount. Do not round a 3h 58m delay upward, and do not let touchdown replace later door opening.
For cancellation rerouting, different statutory arrival windows can also permit reduction. Record the replacement itinerary rather than assuming maximum payment from route length alone.
Final destination can be beyond the transatlantic gateway
A Madrid-Philadelphia-Orlando journey on one ticket is measured at Orlando. If the first flight is two hours late but the passenger misses the connection and arrives six hours late, the final delay can support the long-distance amount.
Separate reservations are generally not combined. If the Orlando ticket was bought independently, Philadelphia may remain the protected destination. Save ticket numbers and baggage-checking details.
The American missed-connection guide explains the single-reservation test.
Cause can turn the maximum into zero
Ordinary technical trouble, internal crew scheduling and many routine operational issues do not automatically excuse American. Severe weather, ATC restrictions, airport closure or external security events can be extraordinary when causal link and reasonable measures are proved.
Request the exact event, time and impact. A general reference to “weather” somewhere in the system does not prove why this specific Europe-origin flight arrived late. Compare the aircraft rotation and available alternatives.
Fixed compensation can be zero while meals, hotel, rerouting and reasonable expenses remain payable on a covered departure. Keep those requests separate.
Family and group value
The amount is generally per eligible passenger. A family of five on a qualifying four-hour Paris-Dallas disruption can have a potential fixed total of EUR 3,000. A group of six on Heathrow-Miami can have a potential GBP 3,120.
Each traveller needs ticket evidence. Fare-paying children generally qualify. A truly free infant ticket can require separate analysis. Shared expenses, such as one taxi, are claimed once at actual cost rather than multiplied.
Codeshare can create an inbound maximum
An AA-coded New York-Madrid flight operated by Iberia is an EU-carrier operation and can fall within EU261 inbound coverage. An AA-coded New York-London flight operated by British Airways can fall within UK261. In those cases, claim against the operating partner.
A BA or Iberia code operated by American remains American operation and normally fails inbound scope. Always preserve the operated-by field.
Evidence and calculation format
Keep the complete ticket, original and replacement schedules, boarding passes, operator wording, final arrival and cause communications. State the calculation per passenger and total:
Four eligible passengers x EUR 600 = EUR 2,400 fixed compensation, plus EUR 96.40 documented care expenses.
If arrival was between three and four hours, calculate the potential half band rather than inflating the demand. Accuracy improves credibility and allows a clear challenge if American uses the wrong reduction.
Use the amount calculator guide for all bands, including EUR 250/400 and GBP 220/350.
Contrasting examples
Rome-Chicago, 4h 22m late due to ordinary maintenance: EU261 covers the non-EU airline because departure was in Rome. EUR 600 per passenger can be due.
Heathrow-Philadelphia, 3h 24m late after controllable disruption: UK261 covers departure, but the long-distance reduction can limit payment to GBP 260.
Miami-Madrid, 7h late on American: there is normally no EU261 fixed payment. If the flight was completed, DOT rules do not generally create an automatic delay award.
Boston-London operated by BA, 4h 10m late: UK operator status can bring the inbound journey within UK261 and make GBP 520 relevant.
Do not exchange a strong claim unknowingly
American may offer miles, a travel credit or goodwill payment. Ask whether it is in addition to statutory rights or requires full settlement. A voluntary voucher can be useful, but compare value, expiry, transfer limits and release wording with the cash entitlement.
Accepting ordinary rerouting does not automatically waive compensation. Keep the replacement arrival because it affects amount.
FAQ
Is four hours required for EUR 600?
For long-distance delay, three hours can qualify but a 50% reduction may apply until four hours. Cancellation and denied boarding use their own timing rules.
Can American pay EUR 600 on Madrid to the US?
Yes. EU261 covers an American-operated flight departing Madrid if the remaining eligibility conditions are met.
Can American pay GBP 520 on US to Heathrow?
Normally not when American operated the US-origin flight. Check whether British Airways or another eligible partner actually operated it.
Is the maximum calculated per reservation?
No. It is generally per eligible passenger, with individual ticket status and authority documented.
Can hotel costs be added to EUR 600?
Yes as a separate reasonable care-expense claim on a covered journey. Attach itemised receipts and avoid duplicate recovery.
