Air Serbia alternative transport: reclaim a flight or train ticket
Short answer: a passenger may recover the reasonable cost of a self-booked replacement flight, train or bus when Air Serbia had a duty to reroute but failed to offer effective transport and the passenger first gave it a fair opportunity to help, unless urgency made contact impossible. Reimbursement is not automatic: prove cancellation or protected disruption, available alternatives, attempted contact, necessity, proportional cost and actual travel.

Do not take a full Air Serbia ticket refund and then describe the same replacement as carrier-arranged rerouting without explaining the legal basis. Refund and rerouting are alternative transport remedies in many situations.

Start with Air Serbia's duty
After a covered cancellation or involuntary denied boarding, Air Serbia should offer refund or replacement travel. A qualifying missed connection on one booking also requires carriage to the final destination. A long departure delay can allow abandonment, but does not always create an unlimited right to buy any substitute.

Give the carrier a workable opportunity
Contact Air Serbia at the airport, through its notified disruption channel and in writing where possible. Ask for a specific route to the final destination and identify an earlier available option.
Preserve:
- timestamps of calls and chats;
- queue photograph or closed-desk evidence;
- Air Serbia's proposed arrival;
- screenshots of reasonable alternative seats;
- refusal or failure to respond;
- urgency, such as a connection or essential event;
- time at which self-booking became necessary.
Repeated unanswered calls over several hours can show opportunity. One abandoned call while staff are actively rebooking passengers may not.
Choose proportionate transport
The replacement should be comparable, safe and reasonably priced. Economy for economy is the clearest comparison. A higher cabin can still be justified when no lower seat exists and delay would otherwise be substantial, but document availability.
Rail or bus can be suitable for regional travel, especially after a diversion or cancellation between well-connected cities. Include necessary transfer to the station and from the arrival point, while excluding unrelated stops.
Consider the entire cost rather than ticket price alone. A slightly dearer direct flight can be more reasonable than a cheap overnight route requiring hotel, visas and extra ground transport.
Examples
EU-origin cancellation
Air Serbia cancels a covered EU-to-Belgrade service. Its only offer arrives two days later, while another airline has economy seats that evening. The passenger sends the option to Air Serbia, asks for rerouting, receives a refusal and buys the reasonable alternative. EU261 Article 8 can support reimbursement, with fixed cancellation compensation analysed separately.
Missed protected connection at BEG
One ticket continues beyond Belgrade. Air Serbia provides no confirmed seat until the following evening, but a partner route reaches the final destination that morning. Evidence of the unitary booking, request and available seat strengthens the self-booked claim.
Separate self-transfer
The Air Serbia ticket ends at Belgrade and a separately purchased train or flight is missed. The first carrier does not automatically owe replacement of that separate contract. Insurance or proven Montreal delay damages may be considered, subject to causation and mitigation.
Do not accidentally choose refund first
If Air Serbia offers a cash refund and the passenger accepts it, the carrier can argue that its rerouting duty ended. Where replacement-cost reimbursement is intended, clearly request earliest rerouting and state that self-booking occurs because the carrier failed to provide it.
Sometimes local law permits the passenger to obtain repayment after failure to reroute even if a refund was processed automatically. That dispute is harder. Immediately tell Air Serbia that the refund was not the selected remedy and preserve the choice screen.

Canadian and US differences
Air Serbia's current Canadian tariff declares large-carrier status. Under APPR, broader any-airline rebooking can arise after specified nine-hour or 48-hour periods depending on control. A Toronto passenger should match self-booking timing to those rules rather than assume EU “earliest opportunity” wording.
US DOT guarantees refund after qualifying cancellation or significant change when the passenger rejects alternatives. It does not generally require EU-style rerouting on another carrier. A self-booked US replacement therefore needs contractual, applicable foreign-law or damages analysis beyond the federal refund rule.

Deduct any refund already received for the same unused transport. Do not claim both full original fare and full replacement cost without explaining how the applicable remedy allocates them.
Claim and escalation
Submit the original itinerary, Air Serbia cancellation or missed-connection record, all rerouting requests, alternatives, new ticket, proof of use and final arrival. Explain why the purchase was necessary and proportionate.
If Air Serbia says “you booked without permission,” respond with the contact chronology and the duty relied on. If it disputes price, show the alternatives available at the moment rather than today's cheaper fares.
For Serbian procedure, complain within 90 days and allow the 60-day complete-response stage. An unresolved monetary dispute may require a competent court because CAD does not itself order private reimbursement.

FAQ
Can I immediately buy another airline ticket after cancellation?
First ask Air Serbia for effective rerouting unless contact is genuinely impossible or delay creates urgent necessity. Preserve that opportunity and available alternatives.
Is a train eligible as replacement transport?
It can be when rail reasonably carries the passenger toward the booked destination and Air Serbia failed to provide suitable rerouting. Keep ticket and journey proof.
Can I choose business class if economy is sold out?
Possibly when no reasonable lower cabin exists and urgency justifies travel, but document availability and explain why waiting was not a comparable solution.
What if Air Serbia already refunded my original ticket?
Deduct the refund and explain whether it was chosen or automatic. Accepting reimbursement can end rerouting rights and make replacement recovery harder.
Are missed separate-ticket costs always reimbursed?
No. A self-transfer normally falls outside the first ticket's rerouting duty. Insurance or a proven Montreal damages claim may provide another route.
