Air France refund, voucher or rerouting: choose the right remedy

Short answer: when Air France cancels a covered flight, EU261 gives you a choice between monetary reimbursement, rerouting at the earliest opportunity or rerouting later at your convenience subject to seats. A voucher is optional, not the default legal form of refund. Choose carefully because accepting reimbursement normally ends Air France's duty to carry you under that cancelled booking.

The Article 8 choice

After cancellation, Air France should present three alternatives:

ChoiceWhat it providesBest fit when
reimbursementunused ticket value, plus used sectors that no longer serve the plan and a return where relevantthe journey has lost its purpose
earliest reroutingcomparable carriage to the final destination as soon as reasonably possibleyou still need to arrive
later reroutingcomparable carriage on a date you select, subject to available seatsyou want to postpone rather than abandon

These alternatives are not additions to one another. A passenger cannot ordinarily take a full refund and still require free transport to the destination on the same cancelled contract.

Do not click before checking the itinerary

Airline interfaces can emphasise a refund, credit or next Air France flight. Before choosing:

  1. screenshot every option and its timing;
  2. check other Air France, SkyTeam and suitable rival services;
  3. confirm whether the replacement is ticketed, not merely requested;
  4. compare arrival at the final destination;
  5. check cabin, baggage and airport changes;
  6. ask how a connection or return sector will be protected.

If the app provides no workable route, contact Air France and make a clear request. A written record matters if you later buy alternative transport.

Earliest opportunity can require another carrier

EU261 does not say rerouting must use Air France's own aircraft. European Commission guidance states that carriers should explore direct or indirect alternatives and may need to use another airline or transport mode where that achieves comparable rerouting at the earliest opportunity.

Air France does not have to buy any itinerary a passenger names regardless of price or practicality. Offer a sensible option with available seats and explain urgency. A same-day economy seat may be more comparable than Air France's own departure two days later.

If the airline refuses or does not respond, preserve the proposed route, live availability and price before self-purchase. See the Air France alternative-transport guide for the reimbursement evidence.

Later travel is a distinct right

You can request rerouting on a later date at your convenience, subject to seat availability. This is not an open ticket with unlimited cabin or seasonal flexibility. Agree the new date and obtain a reissued ticket.

Ask how return sectors, paid options and fare conditions transfer. A voluntary change after rerouting has been confirmed may then follow the new ticket's conditions rather than the original cancellation remedy.

Monetary reimbursement

Current EU261 requires reimbursement within seven days through cash, electronic bank transfer, bank order or cheque. Travel vouchers or other services require the passenger's signed agreement.

Reimbursement includes the full cost of the ticket at the purchase price for the part not made and for parts already made if the journey no longer serves the passenger's original travel plan. Where appropriate, Air France should also provide a return flight to the first point of departure at the earliest opportunity.

Example: a feeder reaches CDG, but Air France cancels the onward flight and the business meeting becomes impossible. A passenger may request reimbursement for the journey that no longer serves its purpose and a return to the initial departure point, rather than only the unused coupon.

Five-hour delay without cancellation

If departure is delayed by at least five hours, EU261 also provides a reimbursement choice. The passenger can decide not to travel and recover qualifying ticket value, with return to the first departure point where relevant.

This is different from the three-hour arrival threshold used for fixed compensation. Do not abandon a flight after three hours believing a full refund is automatic. Confirm the projected departure delay and tell Air France that you elect Article 8 reimbursement when the five-hour threshold is met.

Voucher versus refund

A flexible or refundable credit can be useful, but compare:

  • cash value and any bonus;
  • expiry and travel deadline;
  • eligible carrier and passenger;
  • transfer and combination limits;
  • treatment of residual value;
  • refundability of a new booking.

Ask whether the credit repays the ticket, settles EUR 250-600 compensation, or is goodwill. Those are different claims. Never infer the purpose from the amount alone.

The Air France cash-versus-voucher article compares the carrier's separate higher-value compensation vouchers.

Fixed compensation may be additional

The refund or rerouting choice does not itself decide Article 7 compensation. A short-notice cancellation caused by an ordinary Air France operational issue can lead to both transport remedies and EUR 250, EUR 400 or EUR 600.

Conversely, timely notice or extraordinary circumstances may remove the fixed sum while leaving the Article 8 choice intact. Keep the cancellation reason and notification timestamp.

Care while waiting for rerouting

Meals, communication, hotel and airport-hotel transfer can be due during the rerouting wait. If you select a much later date for personal convenience, Air France is not necessarily responsible for care throughout that voluntary interval.

Ask for assistance before paying. Keep receipts where no effective help is provided. Do not combine those expenses with ticket reimbursement in one unexplained total.

Booking through an agent

An online travel agent may control ticket servicing or receive the fare payment, but Air France remains responsible for EU261 operating-carrier duties where it operated the cancelled flight. The practical refund path can depend on who collected the money.

Send both parties the cancellation notice, ticket receipt and remedy chosen. Do not allow each to refer you to the other indefinitely. Record whether Air France refunded the agent and whether the agent deducted a fee.

US itineraries

For flights to, from or within the United States, Department of Transportation automatic-refund rules provide an additional basis when the airline cancels or significantly changes a flight and the passenger rejects alternatives. Air France's US commitment describes seven-business-day credit-card refunds and 20-calendar-day refunds for other payment methods when due.

Those US rules do not replace EU compensation on an Air France-operated journey that also falls within EU261. They should not produce duplicate repayment of the same fare.

Make the request unambiguous

State the booking reference, cancelled sector and one selected Article 8 remedy. If rerouting, name a practical available option. If refund, identify unused and no-longer-useful sectors and the original payment method. List care expenses and fixed compensation separately.

Keep the case reference and avoid opening duplicate forms merely because an answer is slow. The Air France claim-status guide explains follow-up.

FAQ

Can Air France give me only a travel voucher after cancellation?

No. Current EU261 provides monetary reimbursement, while a voucher requires passenger agreement.

Can I take a refund and ask Air France to fly me later?

Normally no. Refund and rerouting are alternative Article 8 choices for the cancelled booking, so decide which outcome you need.

Must rerouting stay within SkyTeam?

No. The earliest comparable solution can require another airline or transport mode when Air France's own or partner options are materially later.

Does a refund remove EUR 600 compensation?

Not automatically. Fixed compensation has separate coverage, notice and cause conditions and can coexist with fare reimbursement.

When can I request a refund for a delayed flight?

EU261 provides the reimbursement choice when departure delay reaches at least five hours and the passenger elects not to continue.
