Air France care at CDG: hotel, meals, calls and transport
Short answer: during a qualifying Air France delay, cancellation or involuntary denied boarding, EU261 can require meals, communication, a hotel and transport between Paris-CDG and the accommodation. Care remains due even when weather, ATC restrictions or another extraordinary circumstance removes fixed compensation. If Air France does not provide effective assistance, buy only what is reasonably necessary and keep itemised receipts.

Check your case in the form
Enter your route, date and type of disruption. We will check whether your case qualifies for a claim under EU 261/2004 or UK261.
What happened to your flight?
Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.
Choose the situation that applies to your flight:
This practical guide states the rules checked on 13 August 2026.
Care is separate from EUR 250-600
Passengers often receive a refusal saying the disruption was extraordinary and assume every claim ends. Article 9 care and Article 7 fixed compensation answer different needs.
| Remedy | Main trigger | Does an extraordinary cause remove it? |
|---|---|---|
| meals and communication | expected wait reaches the Article 6 threshold | no |
| hotel and airport transfer | overnight or additional stay becomes necessary | no |
| fixed EUR 250-600 | qualifying delay, cancellation or boarding refusal | it can |
| ticket reimbursement | cancellation choice or delay of at least five hours | no fault test |
Request and calculate each remedy separately. A meal voucher does not replace fixed compensation, and EUR 600 does not automatically repay a hotel bill.
When meals become due
For delay, the waiting threshold depends on route distance:
| Flight category | Expected departure delay |
|---|---|
| up to 1,500 km | 2 hours |
| intra-EU over 1,500 km | 3 hours |
| other flights of 1,500-3,500 km | 3 hours |
| other flights over 3,500 km | 4 hours |
The food and refreshments must be reasonable in relation to the waiting time. A short daytime delay may call for a meal and drink; a disruption extending through several meal periods may require more.
For cancellation and involuntary denied boarding, care follows the rerouting wait. Do not focus only on the table if Air France has already cancelled and moved you to the next day.
Overnight accommodation
Air France should provide hotel accommodation where a stay of one or more nights becomes necessary, or where an additional stay beyond the passenger's plan is needed. It should also cover transport between the airport and the accommodation.
At CDG, confirm the collection point and whether Air France provides a shuttle, bus or taxi authorisation. Take a screenshot of instructions. If the offered hotel cannot accept the voucher or has no room, record that failure before arranging another reasonable option.
The duty is not limited to passengers who live abroad. A local passenger may still need accommodation if returning home is impractical, although the reasonableness of the chosen solution matters.
Extraordinary events do not suspend care
In McDonagh v Ryanair (C-12/11), decided after volcanic ash closed airspace, the Court of Justice confirmed that the care duty applies during extraordinary circumstances. The regulation does not impose a general time or monetary cap on that duty.
That does not make every expense recoverable. Reimbursement concerns necessary, reasonable and appropriate costs resulting from the carrier's failure to provide care. A luxury suite, minibar, alcohol or entertainment is unlikely to satisfy that test when modest alternatives existed.
If a major closure makes ordinary rooms scarce, preserve evidence of the prices available when you booked. Context can explain why an otherwise high rate was the reasonable option.
Ask Air France first
Make a practical request through the desk, app, message channel or telephone. Record time, location and response. If a queue is so long that waiting would cause harm or every desk is closed, photograph the situation and act reasonably.
Useful evidence includes:
- Air France's notice telling passengers to arrange their own hotel;
- screenshots showing no digital voucher was issued;
- a rejected meal or hotel code;
- photographs of closed service desks;
- chat logs and call records;
- itemised receipts and payment proof.
Air France should not reject a reasonable receipt merely because the passenger lacked a paper voucher when no effective assistance was offered.
Meals at Paris-CDG
Use airline vouchers where they are available and practical. Check outlet restrictions and expiry time before joining a queue. If the voucher value cannot buy a reasonable meal or arrives after outlets close, retain it and the additional receipt.
Claims should show date, passengers and necessity. A supermarket purchase of food and water can be easier to justify than restaurant alcohol or a large group bill without a passenger breakdown.
Families should identify the cost attributable to each traveller without submitting the same receipt several times. Dietary or medical needs can justify a particular purchase when explained briefly and supported where appropriate.
Hotel transport and travel between airports
Article 9 covers transport between the airport and accommodation. A separate rule may require transfer after a diversion to another airport. A move between CDG and Orly as part of rerouting can also create carrier responsibility depending on the arrangement.
Keep the route, time, fare and reason for every taxi or rail ticket. Share a vehicle where sensible. If public transport was unavailable late at night, capture the timetable. The reimbursement request is stronger when it shows why the chosen method was proportionate.
Two communications
EU261 refers to two telephone calls, telex or fax messages, or emails. Modern claims usually concern reasonable communication costs, such as contacting accommodation or relatives. Most passengers have no measurable extra charge, so there may be nothing to reimburse.
Do not turn normal roaming use into an unsupported lump sum. Submit an actual incremental cost and explain its connection to the disruption.
What care does not normally cover
Article 9 is not a general consequential-loss policy. It does not usually repay lost salary, missed events, emotional distress, prepaid tours or business opportunities. Those losses may raise separate Montreal Convention, package-travel, insurance or contract questions and require proof of causation and damage.
Similarly, essential clothing after baggage delay belongs in a baggage claim, not a CDG meal-and-hotel request. Separate files reduce confusion and duplicate recovery.
After choosing a ticket refund
A delay of at least five hours can allow reimbursement when the passenger decides not to continue. A cancellation also presents refund as one of the Article 8 alternatives. Once you abandon the journey and choose reimbursement, care for an extended voluntary stay may no longer remain the same.
Document when the choice was made and what waiting occurred beforehand. Ask Air France how you will return to the first departure point if completed sectors no longer serve the original travel plan.
Claim format
Create a table with date, city, category, merchant, amount, currency and passenger. Attach readable itemised receipts, not only bank totals. Explain in two or three sentences what Air France offered and why self-purchase was necessary.
Submit care costs separately from the Air France fixed-compensation form if the interface provides distinct categories. Preserve the reference and original files.

FAQ
Must Air France provide a hotel after a weather cancellation?
Yes, where rerouting requires an overnight or additional stay. Weather may affect fixed compensation but does not erase reasonable care.
Can I book my own CDG hotel?
You can where Air France provides no effective accommodation, but choose a reasonable room, document the request and retain an itemised receipt.
Are taxi costs from the hotel recoverable?
Transport between the airport and required accommodation falls within care. The method and price should be proportionate to available alternatives.
Does a EUR 15 meal voucher settle my compensation claim?
No. The voucher addresses care during the wait; statutory fixed compensation is a separate question based on disruption and cause.
Can I claim a missed hotel at my destination?
Not under Article 9 care at the disruption point. A prepaid loss may require examination under another legal basis, package rights or travel insurance.
