Aeroplan reward tickets and eUpgrades after a disrupted Air Canada flight
Short answer: paying with Aeroplan points does not normally remove statutory passenger rights. A qualifying Air Canada disruption can still produce cash compensation under APPR, EU261 or UK261, while the unused reward ticket, taxes, eUpgrade credits and paid add-ons are reconciled separately. The decisive questions are the route, operating carrier, confirmed cabin and what part of the reward was actually used.

Keep four different balances apart
Reward-booking disputes become confusing when every item is described as a "refund." Build four columns instead:
| Item | What it represents | Typical remedy |
|---|---|---|
| Statutory compensation | payment for a qualifying disruption | cash or another legally accepted form under the governing regime |
| Aeroplan points | price of an unused reward ticket | points returned to the member account, subject to involuntary or voluntary rules |
| Taxes, fees and surcharges | cash collected with the reward | refund of the unused value to the applicable payment method |
| eUpgrade credits/add-on | upgrade instrument and related charge | return, adjustment or separate discrepancy request if the upgrade was not delivered |
An airline may correctly return points and still leave a compensation claim unanswered. It may pay APPR compensation and still owe missing eUpgrade credits. State each item separately in correspondence.
Reward tickets can qualify for EU261 and UK261
EU261 applies to tickets issued under a frequent-flyer programme or another commercial programme. It does not exclude a passenger merely because Aeroplan points replaced most of the cash fare. Coverage still depends on direction and operating carrier.
Examples:
- Air Canada operates Paris-Toronto on an Aeroplan reward: EU261 can cover the EU departure.
- Air Canada operates London-Montreal on a reward: UK passenger-rights rules can cover the UK departure.
- Air Canada operates Toronto-Paris: EU261 normally does not cover this Canada-origin flight because Air Canada is not an EU carrier; APPR remains relevant.
- Lufthansa operates Frankfurt-Toronto under an AC code: the operating EU carrier, not the AC marketing code, is central to EU261.
The fixed statutory award is not recalculated as a percentage of points used. If all legal conditions are met, the ordinary compensation band applies. Use the coverage guide before selecting a regime.
APPR does not become a points-only remedy
Canadian APPR coverage applies to flights to, from and within Canada, including connecting flights. For an Air Canada delay or cancellation within the airline's control and not required for safety, qualifying final-arrival delay can lead to the same large-carrier amounts whether the booking was paid in cash or points: CAD 400, CAD 700 or CAD 1,000.
Air Canada should not answer a valid statutory cash claim only by redepositing Aeroplan points. The points restore unused ticket value; compensation addresses the qualifying operational disruption. The amount comparison explains why overlapping systems must not produce duplicate fixed recovery for the same event.
When Air Canada cancels the reward itinerary
For an involuntary cancellation, first choose whether to travel on replacement transport or end the journey. If the trip no longer meets the passenger's needs and a refund is selected, request an itemised restoration of:
- points attributable to unused travel;
- cash taxes, fees and carrier charges attributable to the unused ticket;
- paid seat, baggage or other optional services not delivered;
- eUpgrade credits and any eligible related charge;
- companion or priority instrument, where its specific terms allow restoration.
Do not apply the ordinary voluntary-cancellation fee table without examining why the ticket became unused. Aeroplan publishes fees for member-initiated changes and cancellations, but an airline-caused cancellation engages separate passenger-rights and tariff obligations.
If only one direction or sector is unused, ask for the calculation rather than cancelling the whole file blindly. Mixed-cabin reward pricing can make a simple sector value difficult to infer from the points total.
Waitlisted eUpgrade versus confirmed eUpgrade
This distinction controls most eUpgrade disputes.
The request never cleared
A place on the waitlist is not a confirmed Business or Premium Economy cabin. Air Canada's policy says credits are returned when the traveller is not upgraded. For connecting itineraries where only some flights clear, the return can be limited to the non-upgraded segments.
The upgrade cleared, then the passenger flew lower
Keep proof of confirmation, cabin, seat assignment and the later change. This can require an eUpgrade correction and, depending on route, a statutory downgrade analysis. It is stronger than a complaint based only on waitlist position.
The passenger received Premium Economy instead of requested Business
Air Canada's eUpgrade policy allows the best available cabin on a three-cabin aircraft and says the credit requirement and add-on should be adjusted when Premium Economy is assigned instead of Business. Compare the account deduction with the cabin actually flown.
How long should an eUpgrade correction take?
Air Canada's current public pages are not perfectly aligned: its main eUpgrade policy tells members to allow at least 96 hours after departure before reporting a discrepancy, while a dedicated discrepancy page refers to a shorter automated-return period. A cautious claimant should wait the longer 96-hour period, screenshot both the transaction history and current policy, then submit the discrepancy form if the balance remains wrong.
Do not wait for an account correction until a legal compensation deadline is close. The Canadian request for APPR delay or cancellation compensation must generally reach the airline within one year of the disruption. Other regimes and court routes have their own time limits.
Paid upgrade offers require another receipt
A Bid Upgrade or last-minute paid upgrade is not the same instrument as an eUpgrade. Preserve:
- the accepted offer email;
- amount and currency charged;
- affected sector;
- confirmed cabin;
- card statement and refund record;
- replacement boarding pass.
Air Canada's Bid Upgrade material says the paid amount is refunded when the accepted higher cabin cannot be provided due to insufficient seats. That direct refund does not automatically answer a covered statutory downgrade claim or a separate delay claim.
Evidence package for a reward booking
- Download the original reward confirmation and e-ticket number.
- Capture the points debited and every cash component.
- Save the operating-carrier line for each sector.
- Record the scheduled and actual final-arrival times.
- Keep cancellation, rebooking and cause messages.
- Export the eUpgrade transaction history before and after travel.
- Save cabin confirmation and both boarding passes.
- List the requested remedies in separate rows.
For example, a Paris-Toronto reward passenger arriving four hours late might request EU261 compensation, reimbursement of reasonable care expenses and return of a paid service not delivered. The person should not describe the entire request merely as "refund my points."
A practical claim table
| Requested item | Evidence | Requested outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Statutory disruption payment | route, operator, cause, final arrival | applicable APPR, EU261 or UK261 amount |
| Unused reward value | reward receipt and flown sectors | exact points restoration |
| Cash attached to unused travel | tax and fee receipt | itemised monetary refund |
| Missing eUpgrade credits | transaction history and cabin | corrected credit balance |
| Paid upgrade not delivered | acceptance and card receipt | charge refund |
Send the disruption request through the Air Canada claim process. Use the dedicated Aeroplan or eUpgrade channel for the account discrepancy, but cross-reference both case numbers.
FAQ
Can an Aeroplan reward ticket receive EUR 600?
Yes, if the covered Air Canada flight and disruption meet EU261 conditions. Use of points does not by itself reduce the fixed amount.
Will APPR compensation be paid in Aeroplan points?
Statutory compensation is distinct from restoration of points. An alternative benefit should not be imposed in place of the legally required monetary remedy.
Does a waitlisted eUpgrade create downgrade rights?
Usually not by itself. The passenger needs evidence that the higher cabin was confirmed, not merely requested, for a cabin-downgrade argument.
What if only one connecting flight was upgraded?
Air Canada's policy contemplates returning the portion of eUpgrade credits related to sectors that did not clear. Compare each segment separately.
Should I wait 96 hours before making any claim?
Only for the automated eUpgrade account correction. A time-sensitive disruption, expense or baggage claim should be prepared under its own deadline.
Can delay compensation and an upgrade refund both be due?
Yes. The first addresses a qualifying disruption; the second restores an upgrade product that was paid for or confirmed but not supplied.
