Air Austral missed connection on one booking

A missed Air Austral connection is not judged by the delay of the first aircraft alone. The practical question is whether the flights formed one transport contract and, if they did, how late the passenger reached the final destination printed on that booking. Separate tickets may look connected on a travel-agency screen but usually produce separate legal journeys.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:

Prove that the itinerary was one booking

Collect the e-ticket receipt, ticket numbers and coupons for every sector. One booking reference is helpful, but the contractual record matters more than the layout of an agency email. A through fare from Paris Charles de Gaulle via Saint-Denis to Dzaoudzi normally identifies Mayotte as the final destination. Two purchases, Paris–Saint-Denis and Saint-Denis–Dzaoudzi, normally do not.

On one contract, the carrier is responsible for rerouting after a protected misconnection. With separate tickets, the passenger may need to ask the second carrier for goodwill, use travel insurance or rely on a specific agency promise. Do not conceal separate tickets in a claim; explain them accurately.

Measure delay at the final destination

For a qualifying EU261 delay claim, compare scheduled and actual arrival at the final destination on the single contract. Arrival generally occurs when a door opens and disembarkation is permitted. A first sector only 70 minutes late can lead to compensation if the missed connection causes arrival in Dzaoudzi four hours late.

The reverse is also true. A three-hour delay in Saint-Denis does not establish compensation if a protected connection is recovered and the final arrival is under three hours late. Preserve rebooking messages and evidence of the door-opening time at the last airport.

Check territory and every operating carrier

Réunion and Mayotte are EU outermost regions. Air Austral is a French EU carrier. Departures from Paris, Saint-Denis and Dzaoudzi meet EU261’s departure gateway; Air Austral-operated arrivals into those territories from Mauritius, Madagascar, Comoros or Seychelles can meet the EU-carrier inbound gateway.

A UU marketing code does not prove that Air Austral operated a sector. Check whether EWA Air, Air France or another partner appears after “operated by”. On a multi-carrier itinerary, identify the carrier that performed the flight causing the missed connection. Direction and operator should be settled before anyone promises compensation.

Follow a Saint-Denis connection through

Owen books Manchester–Paris on one ticket and a separate Air Austral Paris–Saint-Denis–Dzaoudzi ticket. A delay from Manchester makes him miss the Paris departure. The Air Austral journey had not yet been disrupted, so a claim against Air Austral does not arise merely because its flight left without him. His rights depend on the first contract and any rebooking terms.

Ana instead holds one Air Austral contract from Paris to Dzaoudzi via Saint-Denis. An ordinary technical problem delays the first sector and the next available connection reaches Mayotte five hours late. The final destination test can bring the whole through journey into the claim. Because the route is intra-EU and over 1,500 kilometres, the likely fixed band is EUR 400, subject to the cause defence.

Separate rerouting, care and fixed money

After a protected missed connection, request rerouting to the ticketed final destination at the earliest opportunity under comparable conditions. If the journey no longer serves its purpose after a delay of at least five hours, reimbursement and, where relevant, return to the first departure point may be options. Do not accept a refund without considering the cost of replacing the remaining journey.

Care during the wait can include reasonable meals, refreshments, communications, hotel accommodation and airport–hotel transport. Keep itemised receipts where Air Austral supplies nothing. These costs are not deducted from fixed compensation. A package organiser’s duties and Montreal baggage claims also remain separate.

Examine the cause of the first disruption

Fixed compensation requires a qualifying final-arrival delay and no successful extraordinary-circumstances defence. A cyclone, air-traffic restriction or airport closure can be extraordinary when proved. “Late inbound aircraft” or “operational reasons” does not explain the root event.

Ask what disrupted the rotation and what measures were attempted. The carrier must connect the extraordinary event to the affected operation and address whether reasonable rerouting or operational measures could have avoided the long final delay. As at 9 September 2026, the current EU261 rules apply; the July 2026 reform and its future nine-month claim period have deferred application.

Send a connection-specific claim

Build a timeline for every sector: scheduled departure and arrival, actual arrival, gate, operator and rebooking. State that all coupons were on one transport contract and name the final destination. Attach the original itinerary rather than only the replacement boarding pass.

  • Air Austral compensation claim form and evidence
  • Air Austral codeshare: identify the operating carrier
  • Air Austral delayed, lost or damaged baggage claim
  • Air Austral cancelled flight: refund or rerouting

Use Air Austral’s post-travel channel for a claim against it and retain the confirmation. Ask separately for fixed compensation and receipts. If rejected, challenge the specific issue—contract, operator, timing or cause—rather than resending the same general complaint.

Questions about the missed connection with Air Austral

Does one booking reference prove a protected connection?

It is strong evidence, but retain the ticket receipt and coupons showing one transport contract and its final destination.

What delay counts after a missed connection?

On one booking, use arrival delay at the final destination, not simply the first flight’s departure delay.

Is a self-connection covered in the same way?

Normally not. Separate tickets usually have separate endpoints and transfer risk, subject to any specific seller promise.

Is Paris–Dzaoudzi via Réunion a EUR 600 journey?

Normally no. Mayotte and Réunion are EU territories, so the intra-EU journey over 1,500 kilometres usually falls in the EUR 400 band.

Can cyclone disruption still produce meal and hotel rights?

Yes. Extraordinary circumstances may defeat fixed compensation but do not automatically remove the duty of care.
