Air Austral cancelled flight: refund or rerouting
Published:
When Air Austral cancels a flight, decide first whether you still need the journey. Refund and rerouting are alternative transport remedies; fixed compensation is a separate question. As at 9 September 2026, EU261’s existing rules remain applicable. The July 2026 reform has deferred application, and its future nine-month claim period must not be treated as current.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:
Choose refund or rerouting deliberately
For a covered cancellation, the passenger may choose reimbursement of the unused ticket, rerouting at the earliest opportunity under comparable conditions, or rerouting at a later convenient date subject to seat availability. If a disrupted leg makes the completed part of a trip pointless, reimbursement can also include the relevant used segment and a return to the first departure point where appropriate.
Do not accept a refund reflexively if you still need to reach Réunion or Mayotte and replacement fares are expensive. Once a genuine choice is made, the other option normally falls away. Ask Air Austral to confirm the offered itinerary in writing, including partner-operated sectors and any surface transfer.
Find the territorial gateway and operator
EU261 covers departures from EU airports regardless of carrier and inbound flights from third countries when an EU carrier operates them. Air Austral is a French EU carrier. Réunion and Mayotte are EU outermost regions, unlike Mauritius, Madagascar, Comoros and Seychelles.
Thus Paris–Saint-Denis and Saint-Denis–Paris sit within the EU territorial framework. An Air Austral-operated Mauritius–Réunion flight may also be protected through the EU-carrier arrival rule. But a UU code on a sector actually operated by EWA Air, Air France or another partner is not decisive. Read the “operated by” line and direct the flight claim to the operator.
Decide whether compensation is added
Cancellation compensation may be due when notice was given fewer than 14 days before scheduled departure. It can be excluded where sufficiently close rerouting was offered within the regulation’s timing windows, or where the carrier proves extraordinary circumstances that could not have been avoided despite reasonable measures.
The notice date matters. Save the original booking contact details, cancellation email and timestamp. If Air Austral says an agency was informed earlier, ask for proof that notice effectively reached you. A cyclone, airport closure or air-traffic restriction may support a defence; the carrier must still link the event to this cancellation and explain reasonable alternatives.
The existing fixed amounts are EUR 250, EUR 400 and EUR 600. Paris–Réunion is frequently misclassified: because Réunion is EU territory, this is an intra-EU route over 1,500 kilometres and normally attracts EUR 400, not EUR 600. Distance alone does not make it a third-country long-haul flight.
The fixed award is independent of the fare refund. A passenger may receive both where their separate conditions are met. Where accepted rerouting delivers the passenger close enough to the original arrival time, the carrier can sometimes reduce compensation by 50 per cent.
Daniel’s cancelled Saint-Denis flight
Daniel is booked from Saint-Denis to Paris on Air Austral. At 18:00 the day before departure, the airline cancels for an internal aircraft problem and offers a flight two days later. He must attend a medical appointment in Paris, so he asks for rerouting at the earliest opportunity and identifies a reasonable same-day alternative via another carrier. Air Austral instead refunds automatically.
Daniel should immediately state that he did not choose reimbursement and still requires rerouting. He should mitigate his loss and preserve screenshots of reasonable alternatives before buying independently. If the cancellation cause does not support an extraordinary-circumstances defence, the separate fixed claim would normally be assessed in the EUR 400 intra-EU band. His necessary meals and hotel while awaiting transport belong to care, not that fixed amount.
Use care and package rights for their own purpose
While awaiting rerouting, reasonable meals, refreshments, communications, hotel accommodation and airport–hotel transport may be owed. If Air Austral supplies nothing, retain itemised receipts and keep spending proportionate. Extraordinary circumstances do not automatically cancel care.
Where the flight formed part of a package, the organiser may also have duties concerning accommodation, transfers or a materially shortened holiday. Those package remedies do not turn the organiser into the operating airline and should not duplicate sums recovered for the same loss. Baggage damage or delay follows Montreal rules; it is not cancellation compensation.
Send a remedy-by-remedy request
Attach the confirmation, cancellation notice, replacement offer, boarding documents, receipts and proof of actual travel. State the operating carrier and every airport. Then request, in separate paragraphs: the chosen refund or rerouting remedy, fixed compensation if applicable, and care expenses.
Air Austral has distinct post-travel and refund routes, so label the requested outcome precisely and save the acknowledgement. Médiation Tourisme Voyage may be available after a qualifying prior complaint; DGAC supervision is a different process and is not an individual payment judgment.
Questions about the cancellation with Air Austral
Must I accept a refund?
No. For a covered cancellation, rerouting at the earliest opportunity is an alternative choice when you still need to travel.
Can I claim compensation after taking a replacement flight?
Potentially yes. Rerouting and fixed compensation are separate, though close arrival can permit a reduction and other defences may apply.
What if a cyclone caused the cancellation?
A proven cyclone impact may defeat fixed compensation, but rerouting, refund and care duties can remain.
Is Paris–Réunion a EUR 600 cancellation?
Normally no. It is an intra-EU flight over 1,500 kilometres and normally belongs in the EUR 400 band.
Who handles a cancelled partner flight?
The operating carrier normally handles EU261 flight-performance duties. The seller or package organiser may have separate contractual responsibilities.
