Air Arabia Maroc delayed or lost baggage: PIR, expenses and 1,519 SDR
Report missing Air Arabia Maroc checked baggage at the destination airport immediately, obtain a PIR or baggage claim reference, keep essential-purchase receipts and send a written delay claim no later than 21 days after the bag is returned. If it remains missing, pursue a loss claim with an inventory and proof of value. Under the current Montreal Convention limit, qualifying baggage destruction, loss, damage or delay is capped at 1,519 SDR per passenger, not paid automatically as a lump sum.

Baggage liability is different from EC261 flight compensation. A passenger can have a delayed bag without a qualifying flight delay, or can pursue both when the separate facts support each claim.
Baggage action timetable
| Stage | Action | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Bag absent from belt | Report before leaving the baggage area | PIR or claim reference, baggage tag and arrival boarding pass |
| Tracing period | Update delivery contact and retain messages | Tracker screenshots and delivery address |
| Essential purchases | Buy reasonable necessities for the actual wait | Itemised receipts and explanation of need |
| Bag returned | Record delivery date and condition | Delivery receipt, photos and written claim within 21 days |
| Bag still missing | Build an itemised loss inventory | Purchase evidence, age, condition and replacement basis |
| Court action considered | Check the strict Montreal limitation | Filing must normally occur within two years |
Air Arabia's public page says tracing can take up to 21 days and that passengers will receive compensation information if the bag is not found in that period. Treat 21 days as an important operational marker, but do not wait to create the airport report.
Create the PIR before leaving
Go to Air Arabia baggage services or the handling desk at the final airport as soon as the bag fails to arrive. Provide the tag number, suitcase description, itinerary, temporary address and contact details. Obtain a Property Irregularity Report or the carrier's baggage claim reference and photograph it.
A PIR begins tracing but is not always the complete written monetary claim. Air Arabia's conditions place heavy emphasis on the baggage tag, so keep the detachable receipt issued at check-in. If it is missing, provide every alternative identifier and ask the desk to record the report rather than abandoning the process.
If another airline operated the last segment, identify the successive carriers and ask which company created the tracing file. Do not send the matter to Royal Air Maroc AT merely because both airlines have Morocco in the name. The booking and bag tag should reveal the responsible carrier path.
Reasonable purchases during delay
Montreal damages are compensatory. The passenger should show actual, necessary loss caused by late delivery. Basic toiletries, underwear and suitable clothing can be reasonable, especially away from home. Expensive fashion, electronics or a complete wardrobe are harder to justify without exceptional circumstances.
Location, trip purpose and delay length matter. A visitor without belongings may need more than someone whose bag is delayed on the return home. Explain each purchase and keep itemised receipts plus payment proof. If an item remains useful, the airline may assess its lasting value rather than reimburse every cost in full.
Travel insurance can supplement the claim but disclose payments. Do not recover the same purchase twice. Keep insurer correspondence and request only the outstanding loss from the carrier.
Written claim within 21 days after delivery
The Montreal Convention requires a baggage-delay complaint in writing within 21 days from the date the baggage is placed at the passenger's disposal. Air Arabia's current Conditions of Carriage repeat that deadline. Send the claim even if tracing staff said no follow-up was necessary during the search.
State the delivery date, number of delayed days, PIR reference and each expense. Attach receipts and bank details only through a trusted official channel. Save the submission timestamp and complete copy.
The 21-day period is not a waiting period before claiming. It is the final notice window after delayed delivery. Earlier written submission is safer, particularly if the airline asks for missing documents.
When a bag becomes a loss claim
Air Arabia's public process says it will give compensation details when baggage is not found within 21 days. Prepare an inventory while memory and purchase records are available. List each item, purchase date, original price, condition and evidence. Photos taken before travel, receipts, warranty records and card statements can support value.
The claim is not automatically the cost of buying everything new. Depreciation, proven ownership and ordinary valuation can apply. Irreplaceable sentimental value usually lacks a direct market measure. High-value items placed in checked baggage may also face exclusions or declared-value questions.
Do not confuse the passenger-baggage limit with the cargo rate per kilogram. ICAO's revised Article 22 limits, effective 28 December 2024, set baggage at 1,519 SDR per passenger. It is a ceiling covering destruction, loss, damage and delay together, unless a higher special declaration was made and accepted. Actual proven loss can be lower.
Air Arabia's public baggage FAQ also displays a USD 20 per kilogram figure. For international carriage governed by the Montreal Convention, obtain a reasoned answer addressing the applicable treaty and current 1,519 SDR revision rather than accepting a generic weight calculation without legal analysis.
Two-year action period
Under Montreal, the right to damages is extinguished if court action is not brought within two years, calculated under the Convention from arrival, scheduled arrival or when carriage stopped. A PIR, complaint or negotiation does not necessarily pause that strict period.
Do not confuse it with the 21-day written delay notice or the future nine-month EU passenger-rights filing rule. The adopted EU reform is not applicable on 26 August 2026 and concerns a different regime. Seek jurisdiction-specific advice well before the Montreal deadline if the loss remains unresolved.
Baggage claim versus flight claim
EC261 pays fixed amounts for qualifying delay, cancellation or denied boarding on covered flights. It does not set compensation for a late suitcase. Montreal requires proven baggage damage and applies to qualifying international carriage regardless of the EC261 direction analysis.
For example, a direct 3O flight from Morocco to the EU normally falls outside EC261 because the operator is non-EU. Its international baggage issue may still fall under Montreal. Conversely, a delayed EU departure can support both an EC261 flight claim and a separate baggage expense claim.
Use the Air Arabia Maroc flight-compensation guide for the journey disruption and keep the amounts separate.
Submit a complete file
Include the booking, boarding credential, tag, PIR, delivery record, item inventory, receipts, photographs and correspondence. Identify every passenger and bag; the treaty ceiling is per passenger, not per suitcase. Explain shared family purchases accurately.
Ask for an itemised decision showing accepted expenses, valuation, currency and legal limit. Preserve the original documents and send copies. Rules were checked on 26 August 2026; treaty applicability and local procedure should be confirmed for the actual itinerary.
FAQ
Is a PIR enough to receive baggage compensation?
No. It creates the airport incident record, but the passenger should also send a written monetary claim with receipts or an inventory within the applicable deadline.
When does the 21-day delayed-baggage deadline start?
It starts when the baggage is placed at the passenger's disposal. Send the written claim earlier rather than waiting until the final day.
Does Air Arabia automatically pay 1,519 SDR for a lost bag?
No. The amount is a current treaty ceiling per passenger. The claimant must prove actual loss, and the recoverable value can be lower.
Can I buy clothes while waiting for my suitcase?
Yes, reasonable necessary purchases can be claimed with itemised receipts. The trip location, purpose, duration and usefulness of the items affect assessment.
Can I claim both flight compensation and baggage expenses?
Potentially. EC261 or UK261 flight rights and Montreal baggage damages are separate and can coexist when each set of conditions is met.
