Wizz Air at London Luton (LTN): compensation and your rights

Short answer: If your Wizz Air flight departed from London Luton and you arrived at your final destination 3 or more hours late, or it was cancelled at short notice, or you were bumped against your will, you can usually claim fixed compensation of GBP 220, GBP 350 or GBP 520 under UK261 (the UK's retained version of Regulation (EC) 261/2004). Luton is a UK departure, so the pounds figures apply, the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) is the regulator, and you claim in sterling. Your return leg from an EU airport is a different story — that one falls under EU261 in euros.

Why Luton means UK261

London Luton is Wizz Air's largest UK base, and the airline runs most of its Luton schedule through Wizz Air UK, which holds a UK Air Operator's Certificate. When a flight takes off from a UK airport, the rules that protect you are UK261 — the body of EU air passenger law that the UK kept after Brexit. In practice the structure is identical to EU261; the differences are the currency (pounds, not euros), the enforcement body (the CAA rather than a national body in the EU), and the fact that claims are handled in the UK.

The one rule that decides everything is simple: the departure airport sets the regime. Fly out of Luton and you are on UK261. Fly back into Luton from Budapest, Bucharest, Warsaw or Sofia and that return sector is on EU261, because it departed an EU/EEA airport. A single return trip can therefore be governed by two different systems, in two currencies, escalated to two different regulators. It is worth keeping the two legs mentally separate from the moment something goes wrong.

How much you can claim from Luton

UK261 compensation is a fixed amount set by the distance of the flight, not by the price of your ticket:

  • GBP 220 — flights of 1,500 km or less.
  • GBP 350 — flights between 1,500 km and 3,500 km, and all longer flights that stay within the EU.
  • GBP 520 — flights over 3,500 km outside the EU.

Most of Wizz Air's Luton network sits comfortably in the middle band. Typical routes and where they land:

  • Luton to Warsaw, Gdansk, Katowice, Wroclaw (Poland) — roughly 1,400–1,600 km, so usually GBP 350.
  • Luton to Budapest (Hungary) — around 1,500 km, generally GBP 350.
  • Luton to Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca (Romania) — around 1,900–2,000 km, GBP 350.
  • Luton to Sofia, Varna (Bulgaria) — around 2,000–2,300 km, GBP 350.

Shorter city pairs can fall into the GBP 220 band, but the great majority of Luton's Central and Eastern European flying is medium-haul and pays GBP 350 per passenger when the delay qualifies. You can check the band for your exact route with our flight compensation calculator.

When compensation is actually due

Three situations trigger the fixed payment:

  1. A long delay — you reach your final destination 3 or more hours after the scheduled arrival time. What matters is arrival lateness, not departure lateness (Sturgeon, C-402/07). If you booked a connection through the same reservation, the delay is measured at the very end of the journey (Folkerts, C-11/11).
  2. A cancellation at short notice, where the airline did not re-route you close to your original times.
  3. Denied boarding because the flight was overbooked and you did not volunteer to give up your seat.

Compensation is separate from your other rights, and mixing them up costs passengers money. Keep four things distinct:

  • Compensation — the fixed GBP 220/350/520.
  • Refund or re-routing — if your flight is cancelled you choose either your money back or a new flight. A cash refund must be paid within 7 days; you only take a WIZZ credit or voucher instead if you actively agree to it. See refund vs WIZZ credit.
  • The right to care — meals, refreshments, and a hotel plus transfers when an overnight is needed. Care kicks in at 2, 3 or 4 hours depending on distance, and it is owed even when the airline is not liable to pay compensation (McDonagh, C-12/11).
  • Reimbursement of out-of-pocket costs — if Wizz Air fails to provide care and you reasonably buy your own meal or hotel, you can reclaim it. Keep every receipt and keep the amounts sensible.

Extraordinary circumstances

Compensation can be refused when the disruption was caused by extraordinary circumstances the airline could not have avoided — genuinely severe weather, air traffic control restrictions, or a security alert. But the bar is high and the airline has to prove it. Routine technical faults do not count (Wallentin-Hermann, C-549/07; van der Lans, C-257/14), and a strike by the airline's own crew does not count either (Airhelp v SAS, C-28/20). Crucially, even a valid extraordinary-circumstances defence removes only the compensation — your right to care and to a refund or re-routing stays fully in place.

Who you claim against, and how

The operating carrier is liable (Wirth, C-532/17). Wizz Air flies through several licensed entities — Wizz Air Hungary, Wizz Air Malta, Wizz Air UK, and Wizz Air Abu Dhabi. For most Luton departures the operating carrier is Wizz Air UK, and the regulator you escalate to is the UK Civil Aviation Authority. For your EU-departing return leg, you would instead escalate to the national enforcement body of the departure country (for example in Hungary or Romania).

A practical route to a claim:

  1. Gather your booking reference, boarding passes, and any delay or cancellation notices.
  2. Note the scheduled and actual arrival times at your final destination.
  3. Submit the claim to Wizz Air in writing, stating the flight, the delay length, and the amount due in pounds.
  4. If Wizz Air rejects it or goes quiet, escalate to the CAA (for the Luton leg) or to an alternative dispute resolution body, or bring a small claim.

You do not need a claims agency to do this, and you keep more of the money if you claim yourself. For the full walk-through see our guide on Wizz Air delayed flight compensation and the overview of which regime applies, UK261 or EU261.

Baggage is a separate matter

If your bag is delayed, damaged or lost, that is not an EU261/UK261 issue at all — it runs under the Montreal Convention 1999, and the numbers are completely different. Airline liability is capped at about 1,519 SDR per passenger (the figure in force since 28 December 2024, very roughly EUR 1,850 / GBP 1,600 and moving with exchange rates). This is compensation for proven loss up to that ceiling, not an automatic payout, and it is never the 220/350/520 flight figure. File a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) at the Luton baggage desk before you leave the airport, then write to Wizz Air within 7 days for damage and 21 days for a delayed bag (counted from when you get it back). A bag missing around 21 days is generally treated as lost. There is a 2-year long-stop to start court proceedings. More detail is in Wizz Air delayed or lost baggage.

A note on WIZZ add-ons

WIZZ Flex, WIZZ Discount Club membership, and Priority / large cabin bag are commercial products. Whether they are refundable follows Wizz Air's own terms and has nothing to do with your statutory EU261, UK261 or Montreal rights. A refund of a membership fee is not the same thing as compensation or a refund for a disrupted flight — do not let one be swapped for the other.

FAQ

My Luton flight was 3 hours 20 minutes late to Warsaw. What do I get?

If no extraordinary circumstance applies, you are due GBP 350 under UK261, plus reimbursement of any reasonable food or refreshments you had to buy while waiting.

The outbound was from Luton but my delay happened on the way home from Bucharest. Which rules apply?

The return leg departed an EU airport, so it is EU261 in euros, escalated to the Romanian enforcement body — not UK261.

Wizz Air offered me a WIZZ credit instead of cash. Do I have to take it?

No. For a cancelled flight you are entitled to a cash refund within 7 days. You only receive a voucher or credit if you choose it. See refund vs WIZZ credit.

How long do I have to bring a claim?

Time limits depend on jurisdiction, not on the airline. In England and Wales the period is generally about 6 years; Scotland is shorter at 5 years, and EU periods vary. Baggage claims under Montreal have a firm 2-year limit.

Does it matter that Wizz Air UK, not Wizz Air Hungary, operated my flight?

For your Luton departure it confirms the claim sits with Wizz Air UK under UK261 and the CAA. It does not change the amount you are owed.
