Virgin Atlantic diverted flight and arrival at another airport
A Virgin Atlantic diversion does not end the journey when the aircraft lands at an airport other than the booked destination. On a UK261-protected flight, Virgin should arrange onward transport to the original airport or another destination agreed with the passenger. Fixed compensation depends on arrival after that transfer and the diversion cause, while care and reimbursement can remain separately.

What happened to your flight?

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:
Keep the original itinerary, diversion announcement, landing point, transfer offer and time of arrival at the booked destination. Touchdown at the alternative airport can produce an incorrectly short delay.
Diversion decision table
| Situation | Main right to examine |
|---|---|
| Nearby airport serving the same region | Onward transfer and final-arrival timing |
| Remote airport with no Virgin transport | Reasonable self-arranged transfer costs |
| Passenger chooses a different city | Written agreement on destination and costs |
| Diversion followed by overnight wait | Meals, hotel and transport care |
| Aircraft continues later to booked airport | Care during wait and final door-opening time |
| Diversion makes connection impossible | Rerouting to last destination on one booking |
Do not accept a statement that the flight “operated” as proof no claim exists. The contractual destination and actual arrival remain central.
Onward transport duty
When a flight is rerouted to another airport serving the same town or region, passenger-rights rules place the transfer cost on the operating carrier. Virgin should transport the passenger to the booked airport or another nearby destination agreed with them.
Ask staff for a bus, train or taxi arrangement. If none is supplied, choose a reasonable option and keep itemised receipts. A private long-distance taxi may be challenged if a prompt train was available, but it may be justified late at night, for a family or where accessibility requires it.
Get agreement before travelling to a different city for personal convenience. Without it, Virgin may limit repayment to the transfer it should have provided to the original destination.
Calculate final arrival
For fixed delay compensation, arrival should reflect when the passenger reaches the booked airport or agreed destination after carrier-provided transfer. A long-distance flight landing at an alternative airport three hours late and delivering passengers to the booked airport five hours late can reach the GBP 520 timing band, subject to coverage and cause.
If Virgin offers immediate transport but the passenger instead spends hours elsewhere, the additional time may not count. Keep the transfer schedule and reason for any alternative choice.
On one booking with a connection, the last ticketed destination controls. A diversion that causes a missed onward flight requires rerouting and final-arrival measurement after the replacement. Separate tickets normally divide responsibility.
Is diversion a cancellation?
Landing at another airport does not automatically mean the flight was cancelled. Courts have distinguished nearby-airport diversion from cancellation when the carrier provides onward transfer. The event can still produce delay compensation.
A diversion to a distant airport, termination of carriage or replacement by another service may need deeper classification. Preserve flight number, whether passengers remained on board, and what Virgin said about continuation.
The passenger’s travel choice matters. If Virgin cannot complete the journey and offers no reasonable rerouting, reimbursement or self-rerouting costs can arise. Do not use the original transport and simultaneously demand its full refund.
Cause of the diversion
Weather, medical emergency, airport closure, security event, air traffic restriction, technical defect or operational planning can cause diversion. Their compensation treatment differs.
A genuine medical emergency or external airport closure can be extraordinary. Virgin should identify the event and show reasonable measures. An ordinary technical fault or internal fuel or crew planning issue may remain within airline activity. A captain’s safety decision should not be challenged casually, but the underlying cause and later mitigation can still be examined.
Even an extraordinary diversion leaves care and transfer duties. Ask what transport and accommodation Virgin arranged. The weather and ATC guide explains external-cause evidence.
Care after landing elsewhere
Passengers can be stranded after airports close for the night. Virgin should provide reasonable meals, communication, hotel and airport-hotel transport when required. The duty can last until a protected rerouting is completed.
If staff direct passengers to arrange their own accommodation, keep that message and itemised receipts. Record local scarcity, opening hours and family or disability needs. Avoid unnecessary luxury spending.
Checked baggage may remain on the aircraft or be unloaded later. Obtain clear instructions and report a bag not delivered at the final destination. A baggage problem has separate Montreal deadlines.
Route coverage
UK departures are covered, as are many Virgin-operated arrivals into the UK or EU. A diversion does not change the original route’s territorial assessment. The operator remains the airline intended to perform the booked service.
A Virgin-operated New York-London flight diverted within the UK can still qualify under UK261. A Delta-operated flight under a VS number may not have the same inbound fixed coverage. Preserve the operated-by line.
EU261 can cover a Virgin departure from the EU. A third-country-to-EU Virgin operation may instead rely on UK261 because Virgin is a UK carrier arriving in the EU.
Claim file
Include original destination, alternative airport, landing and door-opening times, onward transport, arrival at the booked airport, cause and operator. Attach transfer, meal and hotel receipts in separate groups. If a connection was missed, include the full one-ticket itinerary and eventual arrival.
Request transfer costs even if fixed compensation is disputed. State the relevant GBP amount only after final arrival and cause analysis. The Virgin delay guide covers timing, and the care-cost page covers receipts.

FAQ
Does landing at another airport count as arrival?
Not necessarily for compensation timing. Onward transfer to the booked airport or agreed destination should be considered.
Must Virgin pay for a taxi after diversion?
Virgin owes reasonable onward transport. A taxi can qualify when no suitable carrier transport or practical public option exists.
Is every diverted flight treated as cancelled?
No. A nearby-airport diversion with onward transport can remain an operated but delayed flight; distant termination may need closer analysis.
Can weather remove transfer costs?
No. Extraordinary weather may defeat fixed compensation, but Virgin’s duty to complete transport and provide reasonable care can remain.
What if I accept another destination?
Get the agreement in writing, including transport and cost terms. Otherwise repayment may be limited to reaching the original booked airport.
