Tunisair codeshare and Etihad: the operating-carrier test

A Tunisair marketing code does not make Tunisair the operating carrier. Under the Tunisair-Etihad agreement announced in January 2026, Tunis-Abu Dhabi services can be sold under either code but are operated by Etihad. Direct disruption claims must start with the actual operator and applicable route rules.

This guide addresses Tunisair codeshare and Etihad for Tunisair travel. The law and airline information were checked on 28 August 2026. Verify the route and operator for the travel date.

First test the direction of the flight

Tunisair is a Tunisian carrier. It is not an EU or UK airline. EC261 can cover its European departures. A direct Tunisia-to-Europe flight is normally outside EC261.

UK261 uses a similar direction test. A UK departure can be protected. A direct Tunisair return from Tunisia normally is not.

Nationality and payment currency do not alter the test. Examine each direction separately. A protected outbound does not protect the return automatically.

After scope, examine the event, arrival delay, distance and cause. A covered flight still needs all other conditions.

Read beyond the flight number

The official announcement states that Etihad operates the Tunis-Abu Dhabi services covered by the agreement. One ticket, through check-in and baggage convenience do not transfer operational responsibility to Tunisair. Preserve the booking page that names Etihad.

For EC261, an Etihad-operated direct flight from Tunisia to the EU would still involve a non-EU carrier, while an EU departure remains covered in principle. The code printed before the number does not alter Article 3.

A connection can involve two operators and two causes. If a Tunisair sector from Europe is late and causes a missed Etihad connection on one ticket, examine the protected journey and the carrier responsible for the initiating disruption. If Etihad independently disrupts the replacement, analyse that event separately.

Baggage claims have their own carrier rules. Through-tagging is useful evidence, but passengers should record where the bag was last seen and use the arrival-airport PIR process. Do not assume the marketing airline physically handled the baggage.

Worked example

A booking displays a TU code from Tunis to Abu Dhabi and states "operated by Etihad Airways". The passenger directs an operational-delay complaint to Etihad. If an earlier EU-origin Tunisair sector caused the missed connection on the same reservation, that initiating event needs its own EC261 analysis.

What can be requested in a covered Tunisair codeshare and Etihad case?

Fixed payment, ticket choices and care costs are separate. List each requested amount.

Tunisair codeshare and Etihad: refund or reroutingCancellation or five-hour waitTicket, offer and choice.

EC261 normally uses great-circle distance. A protected through booking uses its final destination. Timely rerouting can sometimes reduce a fixed payment.

Extraordinary events may remove only the fixed payment. They do not erase every duty. Tunisair must prove the event, causal link and reasonable measures.

Evidence checklist

For this Tunisair codeshare and Etihad request, preserve the following material:

  • Booking page with operated-by wording.
  • Ticketing and marketing carrier codes.
  • Actual boarding pass operator.
  • Separate chronology for each disrupted sector.
  • One-ticket proof for the connection.
  • Replacement operator details.
  • Baggage tag and PIR where relevant.

How to submit and preserve the claim

Tunisair provides separate forms for flight, ticket, ground, onboard and baggage issues. Choose the form matching Tunisair codeshare and Etihad. The airline says each form is personal. Prepare one request per traveller.

State the date, airports, PNR, ticket number and operator. Give times with the time zone. List each remedy on a separate numbered line.

Attach readable copies, not original documents. Keep the ticket, passes, notices and receipts. Save the submitted text and confirmation page.

Tunisair says it aims to answer within two months. That is not a universal time limit. Ask a vague refusal for the precise cause and measures taken.

Escalation depends on the regime and departure state. An EU body may examine compliance. It may not recover money in every case. Tunisia also has a Ministry complaint portal. Court rules need a separate review.

Common mistakes to avoid

A Tunisair code does not prove who operated the flight. Check the operated-by line. Test the EU outbound and Tunisia return separately. Accept a voucher only by informed choice.

Keep baggage, refund, care and fixed payment amounts separate. Each has its own basis. Calculate the request rather than sending one unexplained total.

The EU reform approved in July 2026 is not yet applied on the checked date. Its future nine-month claim rule is not a current deadline. Nor is its 30-day reply rule. Existing law and national limitation rules still govern.

FAQ

Who operates the Tunisair-Etihad Tunis-Abu Dhabi service?

Tunisair official information says the covered services are operated by Etihad and can be booked under either airline code.

Does a TU code make Tunisair liable?

No. The operating carrier usually faces the direct statutory disruption claim. The ticketing role can still matter for refunds.

Can one ticket include two responsible airlines?

Yes. Assign each operational event to the carrier involved and analyse whether the whole protected journey affects final-arrival compensation.

Who receives a baggage claim on a codeshare?

Montreal rules may permit claims against carriers involved in the carriage. Create the PIR immediately and preserve every tag and operator.

Does through check-in prove one protected booking?

It is useful evidence but not conclusive by itself. Keep the e-ticket, coupon numbers and single reservation reference.
