Titan Airways flight compensation: charter and wet-lease rights

Published: 2 November 2026Updated: 2 November 2026

A delayed or cancelled Titan Airways passenger flight may be protected by UK261, EU261 or both. The decisive first step is to distinguish the British Titan Airways operator from Titan Airways Malta and to establish who controlled the actual service. Titan does not sell tickets directly to the public, so the company named on a holiday confirmation is not necessarily the airline responsible for the statutory flight claim.

Check which rules cover your flight

Enter the complete route, date, operating airline and disruption. We will check whether EU261, UK261, Turkish SHY or another passenger-rights framework may be relevant.

What happened to your flight?

Choose the situation that applies. Eligibility and currency depend on the route, operating airline, disruption and applicable law.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:

Titan's passenger information is intended for travellers holding ZT flight numbers. The airline also flies for carriers such as British Airways, Jet2.com, TUI Airways and easyJet, and tells passengers booked under a different airline's flight number to use that customer's travel information. Those facts explain the paperwork, but the operating-carrier question must still be assessed from the whole flight record rather than the number alone.

Identify the AOC, not just the Titan name

Titan Airways has long operated from the United Kingdom. In 2026, the group also placed its first passenger aircraft on the Maltese AOC: an A320 registered in Malta for an Airbus employee shuttle between Hamburg-Finkenwerder and Toulouse, also offered for ad-hoc charter and wet lease in Europe. A British registration such as G-... or a Maltese 9H-... is useful evidence, although the boarding pass, crew documentation and operated-by notice provide a fuller answer.

The difference can change inbound coverage. A third-country flight into the UK operated by the British entity can fall under UK261; an EU operator can also satisfy the UK inbound-carrier test. For an arrival into the EU from outside, the Maltese operator can bring the journey within EU261, while the British operator generally cannot on that route alone.

Türkiye-origin Titan operations need one more screen because SHY-YOLCU can cover a foreign carrier departing a Turkish airport. Its reference amounts are EUR 100 domestically and EUR 250, EUR 400 or EUR 600 internationally, paid in TRY at the TCMB selling rate on the payment date. Analyse any EU261 or UK261 overlap without seeking two full payments.

Measure the disruption correctly

A delay claim under EU261 or UK261 normally turns on arrival at the protected final destination at least three hours late, not merely a late pushback. Where several sectors are on one accepted booking, a missed connection can make a modest first delay legally significant. A self-transfer bought on a separate ticket does not automatically become part of Titan's journey.

The airline can avoid fixed compensation if it demonstrates extraordinary circumstances and reasonable measures. External air traffic restrictions, exceptional weather or a security closure may qualify; ordinary operational planning or a routine technical problem should not be accepted as extraordinary merely because the response uses that label. Ask for the event that affected this aircraft and the steps taken.

For a cancellation, retain the date and method of notice plus every replacement proposed. Under EU261 and UK261, reimbursement or rerouting is a separate choice. Fixed compensation also depends on whether notice was given at least 14 days before departure, the alternative timings and the reason. A tour operator's decision to cancel an entire holiday is not automatically the same as Titan cancelling a flight.

If boarding was refused, record whether staff sought volunteers, whether the reservation was confirmed and whether check-in and document rules were met. Involuntary overbooking can generate compensation and travel choices. A refusal for missing documents, safety or late presentation needs another legal analysis.

Pounds, euros, tickets and expenses

UK261 bands are GBP 220 for journeys up to 1,500 km, GBP 350 for the middle distance category and GBP 520 for longer journeys. On a journey over 3,500 km, a three-to-four-hour arrival delay can reduce GBP 520 to GBP 260. EU261 uses EUR 250, EUR 400 and EUR 600; intra-EU travel longer than 1,500 km normally remains in the EUR 400 category.

A statutory amount compensates qualifying disruption. Reimbursement returns the unused fare. Rerouting supplies replacement transport. Care covers proportionate meals, accommodation and transfers while waiting. These remedies can coexist, but the same cost should not be recovered twice. Keep itemised receipts and show who paid.

Payment from an organiser, insurer or another regulation must be disclosed. EU261 and UK261 can overlap on certain UK-EU journeys, but they are not two independent maximum awards. Loss beyond the fixed scheme, including documented delay loss on international carriage, may raise the Montreal Convention; its 6,303 SDR limit is not an automatic sum for inconvenience.

Charter and wet-lease roles

Titan says it does not sell tickets directly to the public. Travel is booked through a partner tour operator or booking agent. That means at least three roles may appear: the organiser selling a package, the airline marketing the seat and the airline operating the aircraft. A charter contract between businesses does not remove passenger rights, but it does not make the organiser the operating carrier either.

On a wet lease, Titan may provide aircraft and crew for another airline under that airline's code. Responsibility under passenger-rights law depends on who performed and controlled the relevant operation, so preserve the booking confirmation, airport notification, boarding pass, safety card or aircraft registration and any replacement notice. Titan's instruction to use the customer airline's information for non-ZT bookings is sensible for immediate travel arrangements; it is not a reason to discard evidence of Titan's actual role.

Complaint route and evidence pack

Start with the entity indicated by the flight evidence. Give passenger names, booking and ticket references, every airport, scheduled and actual arrival, the disruption notice, actual operator and the exact remedies sought. If the ticket uses another airline's code, copy that airline where responsibility is uncertain and ask both parties to identify the operating carrier rather than allowing each to redirect the passenger without an answer.

For UK261, the airline must receive the written complaint first. After a final response or eight weeks, check whether the particular company participates in AviationADR or CEDR; participation is not established merely by recognising the Titan brand. PACT may be available otherwise, but its view is not a binding award. General court limitation is commonly six years in England and Wales and five in Scotland, subject to jurisdiction and case-specific advice.

For an EU261 issue involving Titan Malta, the enforcement or dispute route depends on the departure country and circumstances. Do not copy the UK eight-week procedure into an EU complaint. If SHY applies to a Türkiye departure, complain to the carrier first and use the current SHGM passenger-rights route if the airline gives no answer within ten days or its answer is inadequate.

Check which Titan journey you bought

Enter the airport pair, final destination and actual entity in the flight compensation calculator. The charter and holiday flight guide helps separate airline rights from package duties. Upload both the original and revised itinerary: a later operator change can be the fact that determines coverage.

FAQ

Is Titan Airways a UK airline or an EU airline?

The group includes the established UK operator and Titan Airways Malta. Determine which legal entity operated the particular passenger flight instead of assigning one nationality to the whole brand.

Why can I not buy a Titan ticket directly?

Titan states that public tickets are booked through partner tour operators or agents. It also flies on behalf of other airlines, so passenger documents can show another seller or flight number.

Can Titan Malta make a return flight to the EU eligible for EU261?

Yes, potentially. An EU carrier's flight from a third country into the EU can fall within EU261, subject to the remaining conditions and any earlier benefits.

Does a ZT flight number prove the British company operated?

It is important evidence, but check the legal entity and aircraft documents too. The Maltese operation means the brand alone no longer proves a UK AOC.

Who pays when Titan flew for another airline?

The answer depends on which entity meets the operating-carrier test and which remedy is claimed. Submit the operated-by evidence and require a reasoned response rather than relying only on the ticket seller's logo.
