SAS EuroBonus award ticket and upgrade during disruption

An SAS EuroBonus award ticket available through the public loyalty programme can qualify for EC261 compensation; paying with points does not automatically exclude EUR 250, EUR 400 or EUR 600. After cancellation, returned points, taxes and award availability are separate from fixed compensation. A confirmed SAS Upgrade paid with money or points follows the upgrade terms, while an actual lower-cabin journey can also raise Article 10 downgrade reimbursement.

Do not let return of points be described as payment of an unrelated EC261 amount unless the passenger knowingly agrees to a settlement.

Award tickets and EC261

Article 3(3) excludes passengers travelling free or at a reduced fare not available directly or indirectly to the public. It expressly preserves tickets issued under frequent-flyer and commercial programmes. An ordinary EuroBonus award can therefore receive protection when route, operator, event and cause qualify.

For a delay, measure arrival at the final destination on one protected ticket. For cancellation, examine notice and rerouting. The standard amounts remain EUR 250, EUR 400 and EUR 600 per eligible passenger; the number of points spent does not set the figure.

Employee, industry or other non-public concession travel needs separate examination. Do not assume every booking containing zero cash fare is an ordinary public award.

Cancellation of an award journey

After a covered cancellation, the passenger normally chooses reimbursement or rerouting. Reimbursement of an award ticket should account for the points used and eligible taxes, fees and surcharges. Rerouting can be difficult when award inventory is scarce, but statutory earliest-rerouting duties should not be reduced automatically to whatever reward seats appear online.

Ask SAS to rebook under comparable conditions rather than insisting that the passenger find new award availability. If repayment is chosen, record the points balance before and after, expiry treatment and every cash component.

Partner awards can involve another operating carrier while SAS issued the EuroBonus ticket. Fixed compensation follows the actual operator; SAS can still control point restoration and ticket servicing.

Confirmed SAS Upgrade

SAS Upgrade terms distinguish passenger cancellation from situations where SAS cancels or rebooks the trip. When SAS causes the itinerary change and a confirmed upgrade cannot be used, the terms provide for refund to the original form of payment in the applicable circumstances.

Preserve the bid or purchase confirmation, acceptance timestamp, amount or points, original cabin and replacement cabin. A pending bid that was never accepted is different from a confirmed upgrade.

If the replacement flight provides the upgraded cabin, no upgrade refund is ordinarily due merely because the aircraft or seat changed. A lost paid seat characteristic can still create an ancillary claim.

Downgrade after an upgrade

Suppose a confirmed Business upgrade is removed and the passenger travels in Premium or Economy. Two questions arise: return of the upgrade payment under the SAS terms and statutory reimbursement for travel in a lower confirmed cabin.

Mennens calculates Article 10 reimbursement from the affected segment, but a points or bid upgrade may not show a conventional cabin fare. Ask SAS to disclose its segment price, points return and statutory base. Do not promise that 75 percent will be applied to the full original ticket or to a speculative retail Business fare.

The SAS downgrade page explains segment percentages and taxes.

SkyTeam and partner operation

SAS joined SkyTeam in September 2024, increasing opportunities to earn or redeem across partners. Alliance benefits do not merge legal operators. A Delta-operated flight with an SK code and an SAS-issued award still directs fixed compensation to Delta where territorial scope covers it.

On an inbound flight from outside Europe, operator identity can determine EC261 coverage. A SAS-operated return can be protected; a non-European partner-operated direct return may not. Points currency does not change that territorial rule.

Keep partner flight numbers, operated-by wording and ticket stock. If mileage credit is missing, treat it as a loyalty-account issue rather than fixed flight compensation.

Taxes, fees and expiry

Award tickets often combine points with taxes and surcharges. Request an itemised refund and compare every passenger. Ask how SAS treats points that would have expired during the disrupted journey and preserve the terms effective on the booking date.

An agency or payment provider may hold a cash component. Identify who charged it. Do not accept a net return without explanation of non-refundable components.

Fixed compensation should normally be requested in money. Article 7 permits vouchers or other services only with passenger agreement; points should not be imposed as the sole form.

Claim evidence

Save the award confirmation, points statement, e-ticket, taxes receipt, operating carrier, original and replacement schedules, upgrade acceptance and boarding passes. Show final arrival or cancellation notice and state each remedy separately.

Use the SAS claim category for statutory compensation, then the award or upgrade servicing channel for points and ticket restoration. Link the references in a short chronology while preventing duplicate claims.

This EuroBonus analysis was reviewed on 26 August 2026 against current SAS award and upgrade information. Programme terms and partner availability can change, so retain the booking-date version.

FAQ

Can an EuroBonus award ticket receive EUR 600?

Yes, a public loyalty-programme ticket can qualify when the long-distance route and all other EC261 conditions are met.

Is returning my points the same as compensation?

No. Points restore the award ticket value, while fixed compensation addresses the qualifying disruption.

What happens to a confirmed upgrade after SAS rebooks me?

Apply the SAS Upgrade terms to return money or points when the confirmed upgrade cannot be delivered, and document the cabin actually flown.

Is a pending upgrade bid a confirmed cabin?

No. Preserve the acceptance record; an unaccepted bid is different from confirmed upgraded carriage.

Who pays compensation on a partner award?

The actual operating carrier normally handles fixed compensation, while SAS can remain responsible for the EuroBonus ticket and points.
