SAS cancelled flight: refund, rerouting and compensation

After SAS cancels a covered flight, the passenger normally chooses money back for the unused journey, rerouting at the earliest opportunity, or travel at a later convenient date under comparable conditions. Fixed compensation of EUR 250, EUR 400 or EUR 600 is a separate possibility when notice was short and SAS cannot establish extraordinary circumstances. Do not treat a voucher, replacement flight or refund as an automatic settlement of every right.

What happened to your flight?

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:

Save the first cancellation message before making a selection. Its timestamp, the replacement schedule and the airline actually operating the cancelled sector determine much of the analysis.

Three travel choices after cancellation

Passenger choiceWhat it normally meansMain caution
ReimbursementRepayment for the unused ticket, and used parts if the journey has lost its purposeAccepting it usually ends SAS's duty to carry the passenger on that ticket
Earliest reroutingTransport to the booked destination as soon as reasonably possibleCompare all reasonable carriers and routes, not only the first app offer
Later reroutingTravel on a date chosen by the passenger, subject to seat availabilityObtain the new terms in writing before abandoning the immediate option

These Article 8 choices are alternatives. A traveller should not select reimbursement casually while still expecting free carriage on the original contract. Ask SAS to confirm the selected remedy and preserve screenshots if the app offers only credit or an unsuitable replacement.

The current EC261 rule calls for reimbursement within seven days. The process may change once the July 2026 reform becomes applicable, but future deadlines are not a reason to delay or dilute a present request.

When a return to the starting point is relevant

A partially used ticket deserves special attention. Suppose a passenger flies Edinburgh-Copenhagen, then SAS cancels the onward sector to Warsaw. If the trip can no longer serve its original purpose, reimbursement may cover the affected ticket and a return to Edinburgh at the earliest opportunity. The passenger should explain why continuing no longer has value rather than simply asking for every flown segment back.

If the traveller chooses to continue, SAS should reroute to the final destination under comparable transport conditions. A route through another city or on another airline can be reasonable. A drastic downgrade, an airport hundreds of kilometres away without transfer, or travel days later may not satisfy the earliest-opportunity duty when better options were genuinely available.

Cancellation compensation depends on notice

Time between notice and departureFixed payment position
At least 14 daysNormally no fixed cancellation compensation
From 7 to 13 daysCompensation can be avoided only if the offered rerouting departs no more than 2 hours early and arrives under 4 hours late
Less than 7 daysCompensation can be avoided only if rerouting departs no more than 1 hour early and arrives under 2 hours late

Calculate notice from when the information reached the passenger, not merely when an internal decision was entered. If an online travel agency held the message, preserve evidence of when the passenger actually received it and identify whether SAS informed the intermediary in time.

When the replacement falls outside the stated window, the distance bands are normally EUR 250, EUR 400 and EUR 600. Long journeys over 3,500 km can sometimes be reduced by half when rerouting arrives within four hours. The SAS compensation amount page provides the complete distance and reduction table.

Operating carrier still matters

An SK code does not prove that SAS cancelled an SAS-operated flight. A codeshare partner may have been scheduled to perform the sector, and the fixed-compensation request normally follows that operating airline. Conversely, a ticket sold by a partner may still lead to SAS when the documents say SAS operated the cancelled service.

Keep the original e-ticket, because a post-cancellation replacement can overwrite the carrier information in an app. List the operator of both the cancelled flight and the replacement. Ticket repayment may also involve the seller or payment recipient, particularly where an agent controls the funds, but that does not transfer statutory operating-carrier liability to the agent.

The SAS SkyTeam codeshare guide helps separate marketing, ticketing and operational roles.

Extraordinary circumstances affect only part of the case

SAS can resist fixed compensation by proving that the cancellation resulted from extraordinary circumstances that reasonable measures could not avoid. Air traffic restrictions, airport closure, dangerous weather and security incidents can qualify. The evidence must relate to the cancelled flight and its chronology.

Routine mechanical defects, ordinary resource allocation and many internal staffing problems remain within airline operations. A lawful strike by SAS's own employees over working conditions is not automatically extraordinary under the Court of Justice judgment in Airhelp v SAS. An external air traffic controller strike requires a different assessment.

Even where SAS proves an external cause, the passenger normally retains the Article 8 travel choice and Article 9 care while waiting. Do not allow a refusal of EUR 250-600 to be treated as a refusal of all reimbursement, rerouting, meals or accommodation.

Care while waiting for rerouting

SAS should provide reasonable meals and refreshments in relation to waiting time. An overnight rerouting can require a hotel and transport between the airport and accommodation. Communication facilities also form part of the current regulation.

If assistance is not arranged, choose proportionate options and obtain itemised receipts. Explain the dates, number of travellers and relationship of each expense to the cancellation. Alcohol, luxury accommodation and unrelated shopping are harder to recover. A card statement helps prove payment but rarely describes the item purchased.

Care lasts while the passenger waits for the chosen earliest rerouting, even if that burden is substantial. A passenger who voluntarily chooses later travel for personal convenience has a different care position after the earliest reasonable option has passed.

Buying replacement travel yourself

Self-rerouting carries evidential risk, but it can be justified when SAS fails to offer transport at the earliest opportunity. Before buying, contact SAS through available channels, record the options it offered, save screenshots of realistic alternatives and choose a proportionate itinerary. Tell SAS promptly what has been booked.

Do not buy an unnecessarily expensive premium ticket if reasonable economy transport was available. A train may be appropriate for a regional journey, while another airline can be necessary on a long route. The replacement transport guide explains how to show necessity and mitigation.

Submit a separated, documented request

Build a chronology containing the original itinerary, cancellation notice, replacement offers, chosen remedy and actual arrival. Name each passenger. State fixed compensation separately from ticket reimbursement and care expenses, then attach evidence to each amount.

Use the SAS claim category that matches the request. A disruption-expense form is not necessarily the same as the EU261 compensation channel, and baggage has another process. Save the submitted text, attachment list, confirmation page and reference number.

This page reflects the position checked on 26 August 2026. The adopted EU reform is not yet applicable; in particular, its future nine-month filing rule and 30-day response period are not current deadlines.

FAQ

Must I accept the replacement flight shown by SAS?

No. After a covered cancellation, the law normally offers reimbursement, earliest rerouting or later rerouting. Assess the consequences before choosing.

Does accepting rerouting cancel the compensation claim?

Not automatically. Fixed compensation still depends on notice, replacement timing, distance and whether SAS proves extraordinary circumstances.

Can SAS insist on a travel voucher instead of money?

A voucher should be voluntary. When reimbursement is chosen, request repayment in money through the appropriate channel and retain the selection record.

Are hotel costs recoverable after a weather cancellation?

Reasonable care can remain due even when weather defeats the fixed-payment claim. Keep itemised receipts and connect each expense to the wait.

Who handles a cancelled codeshare flight?

The fixed-compensation claim normally goes to the airline scheduled to operate the cancelled sector, while the seller may remain involved in repayment mechanics.
