Ryanair re-routing and alternative flights: your rights

When Ryanair cancels or badly delays your flight, you have a right to be taken to your destination — and, if Ryanair will not do that in reasonable time, to arrange your own transport and reclaim the cost.

What happened to your flight?

Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:

Short answer: Under Article 8 of EU261 (EU/EEA and Ireland departures) or its UK261 equivalent (UK departures), Ryanair must offer you either a full refund or re-routing to your final destination "at the earliest opportunity" under comparable conditions. If it fails to re-route you in reasonable time, you may buy a competitor's flight, train or coach and invoice Ryanair for the reasonable cost — on top of any EUR 250/400/600 or GBP 220/350/520 compensation you are owed. This guide sits inside our Ryanair compensation series.

Re-routing comes first

When Ryanair cancels — or a delay is long enough that you can treat the journey as abandoned — this Article 8 choice kicks in. The duty rests on Ryanair, and it must be a genuine offer, not a seat three days later while the same route flies half-empty tomorrow. Because Ryanair rejects a large share of first claims, you often have to press this right in writing.

Which regime applies depends on where you took off: every departure from an EU/EEA airport (including all of Ireland) is EU261, and every UK departure — Ryanair's biggest base is London Stansted — is UK261. The re-routing duty is identical under both; only the currency of the separate compensation changes.

When you may buy your own transport

The right to self-arrange and reclaim the cost arises once Ryanair has, in practice, failed its Article 8 duty — in everyday terms:

  • Ryanair offers no re-routing, or one so delayed it is plainly not "at the earliest opportunity";
  • staff cannot be reached — jammed app, closed desk, dead call centre;
  • you are told to "book something and claim it back".

Once that threshold is crossed, buying a seat on another carrier, a train or a coach and invoicing Ryanair is well established. The obligation falls on the operating carrier — the airline that actually flies you (C-532/17, Wirth); for Ryanair Group that may be Ryanair DAC, Malta Air, Buzz or Lauda. Booking through a travel agent changes nothing about this right.

What counts as a "reasonable" cost

"Reasonable" is where these claims are won or lost, and Ryanair leans on the word hard. The safe approach is to mirror what you lost.

SituationUsually reasonableUsually challenged
Class of travelEconomy on the replacement flightA business upgrade when economy was available
Choice of transportDirect competitor flight, train or coach on the same routeA charter or long taxi when trains ran
TimingThe earliest realistic departureWaiting, running up avoidable extra hotel nights
ExtrasThe fare plus transfers to another airportMeals already covered by the Article 9 right to care

Keep the replacement proportionate to the original ticket: a EUR 40 Stansted–Dublin fare does not justify a last-minute business seat when an economy or ferry-and-rail option existed. Where nothing cheaper is available, a higher price can still be reasonable — the test is what a sensible traveller would do at the time, not the cheapest fare in hindsight.

Document everything as you go

Reimbursement claims are won on paper. As you rebook:

  • Screenshot Ryanair's offer — or its absence — from the app, email or board.
  • Log times and names — when you contacted Ryanair and the option offered.
  • Keep every receipt — fare, seat, bag and airport transfers.
  • Show you compared prices — a screenshot of alternatives defeats the "you overspent" line.

On a single Ryanair booking, compensation is measured by the delay at your final destination, not the intermediate leg that failed (C-11/11, Folkerts); two separately booked flights are each judged on their own. Our missed-connection guide and right to care: meals and hotels explain the neighbouring entitlements.

This is separate from your fixed compensation

A common mistake is to treat the replacement ticket as your "compensation". It is not. Reimbursement puts you back where you should have been; the fixed sum — EUR 250 / GBP 220 up to 1,500 km, EUR 400 / GBP 350 for 1,500–3,500 km and intra-EU flights over 1,500 km, EUR 600 / GBP 520 beyond 3,500 km — answers the late arrival itself. The two stack.

Self-arranging is a calculated risk: you front the money, so give Ryanair a documented chance to re-route first and keep every receipt. If you would rather abandon the trip, insist on a cash refund over a travel voucher. Extraordinary circumstances such as severe weather can block the fixed EUR 250–600 / GBP 220–520 payment, but the re-routing and care duties survive even then (C-12/11, McDonagh).

ClaimWinger can check whether Ryanair met its re-routing duty, whether your replacement cost was reasonable, and whether a parallel compensation claim applies — then pursue both on a no-win, no-fee basis. Start a delayed-flight claim or estimate the figure with our compensation calculator.

FAQ — Frequently asked questions

Can I just book another flight and send Ryanair the bill?

Only after Ryanair has failed to re-route you reasonably. Give it a documented chance first; if nothing timely is offered, buy a proportionate alternative and reclaim the cost under Article 8.

Does buying my own flight cancel my EUR 250–600 compensation?

No. Reimbursement of the replacement transport and the fixed compensation are independent. If you still reach your destination three or more hours late — or the flight was cancelled without lawful notice — you can claim both.

Will Ryanair pay for a business-class seat or a taxi?

Usually only if no economy seat and no reasonable train or coach existed. Keep the class and mode comparable to your original booking, and screenshot the absence of cheaper options.

My Ryanair flight left the UK — euros or pounds?

The re-routing right is the same, but the separate compensation follows the departure: a UK departure is UK261 in sterling (GBP 220/350/520), an EU or Irish departure is EU261 in euros. See Ryanair UK flights and UK261.

How long do I have to reclaim these costs?

Time limits vary widely by the jurisdiction where the claim is pursued. Keep your receipts and start early; our how-to-claim guide walks through the steps.

This guide reflects the legal position in 2026: EU261 and UK261 give a right to re-routing at the earliest opportunity or a full refund under Article 8, and set a three-hour arrival-delay threshold for the fixed EUR 250/400/600 and GBP 220/350/520 compensation. The proposed EU261 reform — higher delay thresholds, a nine-month claim window and a 30-day response deadline — is not yet in force. This is general information, not legal advice; verify the current position for your flight.
