Ryanair: cancelling your own booking and getting a refund
If you cancel a Ryanair flight yourself, the news is blunt: standard Ryanair fares are non-refundable. What you can reclaim is limited to certain government taxes on the flights you did not take, and even that is often eaten up by an administration fee. This is completely different from the situation where Ryanair cancels on you, when a full refund is a legal right.

This is not a free cancellation right; it is an error-correction window for genuine booking mistakes, not a change of heart. What you actually get back when you cancel
Your ticket price is really two things: the fare (with Ryanair's own fees) and government-imposed taxes. They are treated very differently.

Government tax refund, and the admin fee catch
You can ask Ryanair to refund the government taxes attached to a flight you did not fly. The catch is the processing charge: around EUR 20 per passenger per flight (roughly GBP 17 for a UK departure). Because the tax on many short European routes is small, the admin fee frequently equals or exceeds it, leaving you nothing. For UK departures the refundable element is Air Passenger Duty, which on the lowest band is modest and often outweighed by the fee. Request it anyway, within the stated deadline (typically a month of departure), if the tax on your route is meaningful, such as a longer or higher-band flight.
The fare itself
The fare and Ryanair's own charges stay with the airline. Ryanair's terms state plainly that the ticket price and other levies are non-refundable once the grace period has passed, and there is no goodwill refund for changing your plans, whether you cancel weeks ahead or hours before departure.
Name change instead of cancellation
If your plans changed but someone will still use the flight, a name change is usually far better value than writing off the fare. Ryanair allows a full name change (transferring the seat to a different person) online up to shortly before departure, for a fee typically around EUR 115, and higher through customer service. Minor typo corrections and swapping first and last names are cheaper or free within tight limits. For a costly booking that would otherwise be lost, passing the seat to a friend or family member can recover far more than a tax refund ever would.
No-show: what happens if you simply do not fly
If you neither cancel nor turn up, you are a "no-show." You forfeit the fare exactly as on a cancellation, and any onward or return segment on the same booking can be affected. Cancelling in advance carries no penalty, but it does not unlock a fare refund either; the only practical reason to cancel rather than no-show is to trigger the government-tax refund request. Do not assume a no-show gives you any protection or credit. It does not.
How this differs from a Ryanair-initiated cancellation
The rules flip when Ryanair cancels. Then you have a legal right to a full refund of everything you paid, or re-routing, and you may also be owed fixed compensation. The regime depends on where you depart:
- EU, EEA and Ireland departures (including Dublin): EU261 applies, with compensation of EUR 250, EUR 400 or EUR 600 by distance when the disruption is Ryanair's responsibility.
- UK departures (Ryanair's largest base is London Stansted): UK261 applies, with GBP 220, GBP 350 or GBP 520 by distance.
