Qatar Airways weather, ATC and airspace disruption compensation
Severe weather, air traffic control restrictions, airport closure and sudden airspace or security measures can be extraordinary circumstances that remove Qatar Airways’ fixed EU261 or UK261 compensation. The airline must still prove the event affected the specific flight and that reasonable measures could not avoid the result. On a protected departure, care, refund and rerouting remain even when EUR 600 or GBP 520 is not payable.

External-event table
| Event | Starting analysis |
|---|---|
| Thunderstorm closes departure runway | Can be extraordinary |
| ATC flow restriction limits departures | Can be extraordinary |
| Sudden airspace closure blocks planned route | Can be extraordinary |
| Ordinary seasonal wind within operating limits | Flight-specific proof still required |
| Earlier external event, later crew shortage | Separate external and operational delay periods |
| “Weather somewhere in network” | Too general without causal link |
Compensation is not decided by whether the passenger personally saw bad weather.
Route coverage still comes first
Qatar Airways-operated departures from covered EU/EEA/Swiss territory can fall under EU261. Its departures from the UK can fall under UK261. A Qatar-operated journey beginning in Doha, India, Africa, Asia or Australia normally does not gain fixed European compensation on arrival.
On one Europe-origin booking through Doha, an airspace event affecting the onward segment can still require final-destination assessment. Keep the original first airport and all replacement documents.
If a partner operated the affected flight, the fixed claim normally follows that operator. A QR code does not transfer British Airways or Finnair operational responsibility to Qatar Airways.
Qatar Airways must prove three links
A reasoned extraordinary-circumstances defence should show:
- Event: what weather, ATC, airport or airspace measure occurred.
- Causation: how it affected the exact aircraft, route or airport at the relevant time.
- Reasonable measures: why rerouting, substitution or schedule recovery could not avoid the final delay.
An airport notice, ATC restriction or official travel alert can support the first link. Aircraft rotation and passenger re-accommodation records support the later links. “Due to operational reasons caused by weather” does not by itself establish all three.
Weather at origin, Doha and destination
Weather can affect different parts of the journey. A fog closure at the European origin is direct. A sandstorm or thunderstorm in Doha can prevent the aircraft arriving or the connection departing. A cyclone near the final destination can make rerouting impossible.
Ask for the relevant airport and time window. If conditions improved at noon but the replacement did not leave until the next day, Qatar Airways should explain aircraft and crew recovery. The extraordinary event does not automatically cover every later minute.
Operational limits and safety decisions are valid, but the underlying data and recovery still matter for compensation.
Air traffic control restrictions
ATC may impose slots, flow control, route closures or airport-capacity limits. These are generally outside Qatar Airways’ control. The airline should identify the restriction or slot and show that it applied to the flight.
Compare other departures carefully. Another airline leaving does not prove Qatar Airways could safely operate; slots, routes, aircraft and destinations differ. However, widespread operation after a restriction ends can justify asking why Qatar Airways’ recovery took much longer.
Use official airport, ATC or Eurocontrol information where available rather than social-media speculation.
Airspace and security events
Qatar Airways’ network crosses regions where airspace availability can change quickly. Closure, state restrictions or sudden security risk can require rerouting, technical stops, cancellation or temporary schedule reduction.
Do not hard-code an expired suspension as current. Save the travel alert that applied on the travel date, including its timestamp and eligible waiver. A voluntary date change under a commercial waiver is different from statutory compensation for an already disrupted protected flight.
An airspace event can be extraordinary, but Qatar Airways should still consider reasonable alternatives through other routes or partner carriers when feasible.
Care survives the defence
On a protected EU or UK journey, Qatar Airways must provide reasonable meals, communication, hotel accommodation and hotel transport during the wait. Care is not compensation for fault; it responds to passenger need.
This remains true during severe weather and airspace closure. If Qatar Airways cannot provide vouchers or rooms, buy reasonable necessities and keep itemised receipts. Immigration restrictions may affect hotel format, but the airline should seek a workable solution.
Cancellation also preserves reimbursement or rerouting. The Doha care guide explains the statutory layer.
Fixed compensation after mixed causes
Separate the timeline. A Paris departure may be held two hours by ATC, then another six hours because Qatar Airways has no crew for the replacement. The airline should not allocate the entire final delay to ATC without showing causation.
Conversely, a long airspace closure that leaves no lawful route may genuinely explain the complete cancellation despite strong recovery efforts. Evidence, not assumption, decides.
For a protected journey above 3,500 km, the fixed band can reach EUR 600 or GBP 520. Final arrival between three and four hours can permit a 50% reduction. The external defence can reduce the fixed result to zero, but not care or cancellation choices.
Rerouting during large disruption
Ask Qatar Airways for the earliest safe comparable route, including partners and practical alternative airports. Another routing may require visas or transit permissions, so an apparently available seat is not always usable.
If the airline offers travel several days later while a lawful reasonable alternative exists sooner, record the option and request it. Self-buying should follow a documented attempt to obtain help wherever possible.
The oneworld rerouting page explains partner evidence.
Evidence checklist
Keep:
- Qatar Airways travel alert applicable to the date;
- official airport or ATC notice;
- original and replacement itinerary;
- stated cause and affected time;
- final door-opening time;
- alternatives requested and declined;
- hotel, meal and transport receipts;
- operated-by wording.
Ask Qatar Airways which reasonable measures it took after the restriction ended. A concise cause timeline is more useful than dozens of unrelated weather screenshots.
Examples
Amsterdam-Doha cancelled by airport closure: fixed EU261 compensation may be excluded, while refund/rerouting and care remain.
London-Doha-Sydney delayed twelve hours after airspace restriction: UK261 applies from London. Qatar Airways must show how much delay came from the restriction and how it tried to reroute.
Doha-Paris delayed by sandstorm: the Qatar-operated inbound direction normally lacks EU261 fixed compensation; contract and Montreal damage can still be examined.
FAQ
Does bad weather always remove Qatar Airways compensation?
No. Qatar Airways must prove severe relevant weather caused the flight disruption and reasonable measures could not avoid it.
Is an ATC slot an extraordinary circumstance?
It commonly can be, but the specific slot, time and causal effect should be identified.
Does airspace closure cancel hotel rights?
No. Care remains on a protected journey even when fixed compensation is excluded.
Can I rely on Qatar Airways’ current travel alert for an old flight?
Use the alert that applied on the travel date. Current pages can change and may not prove historical conditions.
What if only part of the delay came from weather?
Request a timeline separating the external period from later operational recovery.
