Kenya Airways Amsterdam-Nairobi compensation

A Kenya Airways-operated flight departing Amsterdam-Schiphol for Nairobi can qualify for EU261 compensation of up to EUR 600 per passenger. The return KQ operation from Nairobi is normally outside EU261, but a KLM-operated Nairobi-Amsterdam flight can be covered because KLM is an EU carrier. Operator identity is especially important on this route.

What happened to your flight?

Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.

Check the complete ticket. If the journey begins elsewhere in Europe on a KLM feeder and continues on one reservation, preserve every sector and calculate final arrival at Nairobi or the onward African destination.

Use the Kenya Airways EU departure guide for the wider territorial and rerouting rules behind the Amsterdam claim.

A KL or KQ flight number alone is inconclusive. Save the original operated-by disclosure.

Long-distance delay amount

Amsterdam-Nairobi exceeds 3,500 km. A qualifying arrival delay over four hours can produce EUR 600. Arrival between three and four hours can allow a reduction to EUR 300.

Measure at the final destination on the same reservation. If the passenger reaches Nairobi two hours late but misses a protected connection and arrives in Kilimanjaro eight hours late, use the final arrival. If the onward ticket was purchased independently, the first journey normally ends at Nairobi.

Schiphol and Nairobi use different seasonal offsets. Convert scheduled and actual arrival into a single time zone and support the door-opening moment.

Cancellation and KLM alternatives

On a protected cancellation, the passenger chooses reimbursement or rerouting. Because KLM and Kenya Airways cooperate and both operate relevant network services, ask for the available option that reaches the final destination earliest rather than waiting automatically for the next KQ seat.

Kenya Airways' Conditions permit another carrier where necessary. Record the KLM, Air France and other suitable options visible at the time. A route through Paris may be reasonable if it arrives earlier and transit requirements work.

Fixed compensation remains a separate notice-and-cause test. A KLM reroute does not by itself settle the EUR amount owed by Kenya Airways for its cancelled EU departure.

Services routed through Paris

Kenya Airways has published a triangular pattern involving Nairobi, Paris and Amsterdam on certain services. The actual journey may therefore include a commercial stop even when the route search is described broadly as Amsterdam-Nairobi.

Read the ticket and day-specific schedule. Record whether the passenger was booked through without leaving the aircraft, travelled on a separate CDG-AMS sector or changed services. Avoid quoting a fixed frequency or flight number because schedules can change.

For compensation, use the passenger's ticketed initial departure, final destination and actual arrival. An intermediate Paris stop does not remove the protected Amsterdam departure.

KLM or Kenya Airways: who receives the claim?

EU261 usually places responsibility on the operating carrier. Examples:

  • KQ operates Amsterdam-Nairobi and cancels: claim from Kenya Airways;
  • KLM feeder from Berlin is cancelled: claim from KLM for that operational event;
  • KLM operates Nairobi-Amsterdam: assess KLM under the EU-carrier arrival rule;
  • KQ sells a KL-operated European sector: the KQ marketing code does not make KQ the operator.

Ticket reimbursement can still involve the issuer or travel agent. Separate the statutory operator claim from return of unused fare.

The codeshare guide provides a full document checklist.

Missed onward connection at Nairobi

Passengers often continue from Nairobi to Entebbe, Kigali, Zanzibar, Mombasa or other destinations. On one booking, Kenya Airways should reroute the passenger and the final delay can determine EU261 compensation.

Preserve the original minimum connection, arrival stand time, transfer progress, rebooking and final door opening. Do not accept a decision based only on the delay into Nairobi when the ticket ended elsewhere.

If KQ suggests the passenger caused the misconnection, record whether the first flight arrived within a realistic transfer margin and whether security or bus transfer was controlled by the airport or airline.

Care at Schiphol

The long-distance care threshold is normally four hours at departure. KQ should provide reasonable meals, communication and, for an overnight wait, hotel accommodation with transfers.

Airport congestion or extreme weather can be extraordinary for fixed compensation, but reasonable care remains. If rooms around Schiphol are scarce, document attempts and choose a proportionate available option rather than waiting without shelter solely for a voucher.

After five hours, the passenger may abandon a covered journey and request reimbursement. Tell the airline and confirm all future coupons before leaving.

Evidence and filing

Save the complete reservation, original operator entries, airport updates, KQ messages, KLM alternatives, replacement passes and final arrival evidence. Keep itemised EUR receipts and note when help was requested.

Use Kenya Airways' dedicated EU/UK disruption portal for a KQ-operated EU261 event. State AMS as the initial airport and identify any through destination. The current KQ Conditions refer to a substantive response in 21-30 working days.

Worked Amsterdam operator example

Two travellers buy the same city pair on different dates. On the outbound Amsterdam-Nairobi journey, Kenya Airways operates and a controllable cancellation creates a potential EUR 600 claim. On the return, their boarding passes show KLM as operator; a four-hour Nairobi-Amsterdam delay can be tested under the EU-carrier arrival rule against KLM.

If the return had instead been operated by Kenya Airways, EU261 would normally not apply. The comparison shows why the original operator disclosure is stronger evidence than the airport pair, marketing code or logo displayed by the booking website.

FAQ

Can Amsterdam to Nairobi pay EUR 600?

Yes, a qualifying Kenya Airways departure in the long-distance band can pay EUR 600 per passenger.

Is Kenya Airways from Nairobi to Amsterdam covered?

Normally not under EU261 because KQ is a non-EU operator departing a third country.

What if KLM operates the return?

EU261 may apply because KLM is an EU carrier operating an arrival into the Union.

Does a Paris stop remove Amsterdam coverage?

No. Use the ticketed Amsterdam departure and final destination; the intermediate routing does not erase the EU start.

Can KQ reroute me on KLM?

Ask for it when it is a suitable earlier option. Kenya Airways' contract contemplates another carrier where necessary.
