JetBlue departures from the UK: when UK261 applies
UK261 protects JetBlue-operated flights that depart the United Kingdom, even though JetBlue is a US airline. A qualifying long arrival delay, short-notice cancellation or involuntary denied boarding can pay GBP 220, GBP 350 or GBP 520 per passenger. A separate JetBlue flight from the United States to London normally falls outside UK261 because it does not depart the UK and JetBlue is not a UK carrier.

Coverage examples
| Ticketed journey | UK261 status |
|---|---|
| London to New York on JetBlue | Covered departure |
| London to Boston to another US city on one booking | Can remain covered to final destination |
| New York to London on JetBlue | Normally not covered |
| Paris to London to New York on one continuous booking | Examine EU261 and operating carriers for the complete journey |
| London to New York, then separate US ticket | UK protection normally ends at New York |
Airport marketing can change seasonally, so keep the actual airport and itinerary rather than relying on an old route list. Heathrow and Gatwick are both within UK261 territorial coverage when the flight departs there.
Delay amounts and timing
UK261 currently uses three standard bands: GBP 220 for short flights, GBP 350 for medium flights and GBP 520 for journeys over 3,500 km. JetBlue's transatlantic London departures normally fit the long-distance band.
Fixed delay compensation usually requires arrival at the final ticketed destination at least three hours late. For a one-booking London-Boston-Los Angeles itinerary, Los Angeles is the relevant arrival point. A delay at Boston does not need to reach three hours if the missed connection creates a qualifying final delay.
The long-distance amount can fall to GBP 260 when rerouting delivers the passenger within four hours of the original arrival time. Measure actual arrival by door opening rather than touchdown where timing is disputed.
Cancellation rules
A cancelled UK departure creates a choice between reimbursement and rerouting, plus assistance during the wait. Fixed GBP compensation is assessed separately.
JetBlue can normally avoid the fixed cancellation amount when it gives at least 14 days' notice. With 7-13 days' notice, a sufficiently close replacement schedule can remove payment; with less than seven days, the replacement window is tighter. The carrier must prove notice.
Extraordinary circumstances may also remove fixed compensation, but not the basic refund, rerouting or care rights. Ask for specifics if the explanation says only operational disruption.
Care and replacement travel
Waiting time and distance determine when meals and communication become due. If rerouting requires an overnight stay, JetBlue should arrange reasonable accommodation and transport. Weather does not usually cancel this duty.
If assistance is unavailable, retain itemised receipts and keep spending proportionate. Tell JetBlue before buying a replacement flight where possible. Under UK261, rerouting at the earliest opportunity can require a reasonable alternative, not simply waiting for the next seat on the same airline.
Do not choose a refund until deciding whether you still want JetBlue to carry you. Refund and rerouting are alternatives for the unused transport, while fixed compensation can coexist with either where its test is satisfied.
Extraordinary circumstances under UK rules
External events such as dangerous weather, air traffic control restrictions, airport closure and certain security events can support a defence. Routine technical defects and ordinary crew or aircraft planning generally do not become extraordinary merely because they were unexpected.
JetBlue must show causation and reasonable measures. A storm in another city earlier in the aircraft rotation may be relevant, but the airline should explain why the effect persisted and what alternatives were available. The weather and ATC guide helps test such a response.
UK261 versus JetBlue's own policy
JetBlue publishes a Customer Bill of Rights for controllable delays and cancellations. It uses different time bands and, under the current terms, qualifying benefits beginning in early 2026 are issued as TrueBlue points if the account was attached before departure.
JetBlue's Customer Service Plan says UK-origin passengers may make a UK261 claim in lieu of plan compensation. This wording means passengers should not assume an automatic points award plus GBP 520. Save the offer and read whether accepting it resolves another request.
UK261 is statutory and uses pounds. JetBlue's benefit is contractual and depends on controllability and account conditions. A UK claim should state the statutory event, final arrival, distance and amount rather than requesting a generic courtesy credit.
Example journeys
London-New York delayed: door opening is three hours forty minutes late after a routine technical defect. The starting amount is GBP 520 for each eligible passenger, subject to evidence and no valid external defence.
London-Boston-Seattle cancelled: all sectors are one booking and JetBlue reroutes the passenger to arrive the next day. Final destination is Seattle for timing and distance. Refund is available instead if the passenger abandons the trip.
New York-London delayed five hours: the destination alone does not activate UK261 for JetBlue. US refund rules and the carrier's controllable-delay program should be checked.
Gatwick departure moved to Heathrow: a change of airport can produce transport costs and may form part of a cancellation or rerouting analysis. Preserve the original airport and notice timing.
Claim file
Keep the full booking, ticket number, boarding passes, operating carrier, scheduled and actual final arrival, cancellation notice, reason, rerouting choices and receipts. A group should list each passenger and requested amount individually.
If JetBlue rejects a covered London departure because it is a US airline, point to departure coverage under the UK regime. If another airline operated the affected flight, redirect the statutory claim to that operator and keep JetBlue involved where it controls the ticket refund.
Rules were checked on 14 August 2026. Any later UK legislative change must be assessed for the travel date.
FAQ
Can JetBlue owe GBP 520 from London?
Yes. A qualifying long-distance UK departure can pay GBP 520 per eligible passenger, subject to the statutory conditions and possible reduction.
Is New York to Heathrow covered by UK261?
Normally not when JetBlue operates the flight, because departure is outside the UK and JetBlue is not a UK carrier.
Does Gatwick have the same passenger protection as Heathrow?
Yes. UK261 territorial coverage applies to departures from either UK airport.
Can I claim for a late US connection?
Potentially when it belongs to the same booking that began in the UK and final arrival meets the delay threshold.
Are meals payable during an extraordinary-weather delay?
The UK duty of care generally remains even when extraordinary circumstances remove fixed compensation.
