JetBlue claims after booking through an OTA or travel agent
Booking JetBlue through an OTA or travel agent does not remove passenger rights, but it can split responsibility. The operating carrier generally handles EU261 or UK261 fixed compensation; the ticket issuer or merchant may process unused-fare refund; JetBlue handles its own controllable-event benefit only when the booking meets its account and contact conditions. Preserve the original ticket before either party changes it.

Identify four roles
| Role | Where to find it | Typical task |
|---|---|---|
| Operating carrier | “Operated by” on ticket or boarding pass | Statutory fixed compensation |
| Marketing carrier | Flight code shown in itinerary | Sales and schedule communication |
| Ticket issuer | E-ticket number and receipt | Coupon reissue and often refund |
| Payment merchant | Card statement | Returning collected money |
An OTA brand may be the merchant while JetBlue operates. Another airline can issue an interline ticket containing JetBlue. Do not use one company's logo as proof of every role.
EU261 and UK261 claims remain with the operator
A Paris or Amsterdam departure operated by JetBlue can qualify for EU261 despite agency sale. A London departure can qualify for UK261. The statutory delay, cancellation or denied-boarding demand normally goes directly to JetBlue as operating carrier.
The agent cannot erase EUR 600 or GBP 520 by saying it only sold the flight. Equally, JetBlue can correctly reject fixed compensation where another airline operated the affected codeshare.
State the operating carrier, protected direction, final arrival and amount. Attach the agency itinerary because it proves one-booking connections.
Refund processing
After cancellation or significant change, DOT rules require refund when the passenger declines alternatives. Where an agent collected payment or issued the ticket, it may need to execute the refund. JetBlue may authorize the coupon while the agent transmits money.
Ask both parties in writing:
- who issued the ticket;
- who holds the payment;
- whether JetBlue authorized refund;
- whether the agent has processed it;
- what amount and payment method will be used.
Do not accept each party's generic referral. Send the receipt and request a specific answer. A service fee charged solely by the agent can have different refund terms from the airline fare.
Schedule changes and rebooking
The ticket issuer often must reissue an OTA booking after JetBlue approves a new itinerary. Contact both promptly if an offered connection is impossible. Preserve the original schedule, because an agency portal may overwrite it.
Do not let an agent voluntarily cancel while JetBlue is offering rerouting unless refund is the chosen remedy. Confirm remaining return sectors and partner flights.
If JetBlue fails to provide earliest reasonable rerouting on a protected EU or UK journey, replacement costs can be recoverable with evidence. The replacement-flight guide gives the sequence.
JetBlue Customer Bill of Rights and agency bookings
JetBlue says eligible direct-booking passengers may receive an automatic compensation email within seven days. For passengers booked through another party, it may lack a TrueBlue number or current contact details. The plan tells such passengers to contact JetBlue after at least seven days if no award appears.
Current qualifying benefits are issued as TrueBlue points, and the account must have been attached before departure. Ask the agent to add the number before travel and verify it in JetBlue's record. A loyalty number stored only in the OTA profile may not have transmitted.
This contractual benefit is separate from a statutory EU or UK claim, which JetBlue describes as an alternative for those origin territories.
OTA verification and contact data
Some agency bookings use relay email addresses or incomplete phone numbers. Update contact details with JetBlue so disruption notices arrive. Keep the agency confirmation as evidence of purchase and one-ticket structure.
Do not pay an unsolicited person to “unlock” a booking. Use official JetBlue and seller channels. If verification is required, confirm domain and never share a one-time code outside the official process.
Notice timing can affect cancellation compensation. A message delivered only to the agent may raise factual questions about when the passenger was informed. Save the transmission trail.
Baggage and ancillary services
Report baggage to the operating carrier at the airport, not merely to the OTA. Short four-hour, seven-day and 21-day deadlines cannot wait for an agency ticket dispute.
Seats, bags and upgrades sold by the OTA may appear as separate merchant charges. Identify whether JetBlue delivered each service and request refund from the party that collected the specific fee.
Evidence file
Keep the agency invoice, e-ticket receipt, card statement, original itinerary, JetBlue record locator, operated-by text, notices, all chats, refund authorization and actual refund. Record case numbers for both parties.
A useful chronology shows when JetBlue changed the flight, when the agent was contacted, what each party authorized and whether the passenger travelled. Avoid opening multiple inconsistent cancellation requests.
A card chargeback should be a last, accurately described payment remedy rather than a substitute for the airline claim. Contact the merchant first and give it the refund authorization. If a bank dispute is necessary, claim only the unpaid transaction and disclose any credit or partial refund. A chargeback does not decide EU261 compensation and can complicate an active ticket if started before travel is resolved.
Examples
OTA sells Paris-New York operated by JetBlue: JetBlue handles EUR 600 claim; OTA may transmit fare refund if trip was abandoned.
Agent sells a partner-operated flight under B6 code: statutory compensation follows that operator, while the agent manages ticket money.
New York-London cancellation: no UK261 fixed amount for JetBlue's US departure, but the merchant must return unused fare when alternatives are declined.

FAQ
Does an OTA booking remove EU261 rights?
No. A qualifying claim still follows the operating carrier regardless of sales channel.
Who should refund my ticket?
The ticket issuer or merchant that collected payment often processes refund after carrier authorization.
Can JetBlue tell me to contact the agent?
That can be correct for fare processing, but not necessarily for operating-carrier statutory compensation.
Why did I not receive automatic JetBlue points?
Agency bookings may lack transmitted contact or TrueBlue data; verify the account was attached before departure.
Who handles baggage after an OTA booking?
Report promptly to the operating carrier at the airport and follow its baggage claim process.
