JetBlue missed connections at New York JFK and Boston Logan
A missed JetBlue connection at JFK or Boston can support EUR 600 or GBP 520 when the itinerary is one booking that began in the EU or UK and final arrival is at least three hours late. A journey beginning in the United States normally relies instead on JetBlue rebooking, refund, care and contractual commitments. The connection airport itself does not choose the law.

JFK and Boston involve immigration, baggage and security procedures that can consume transfer time. Preserve the original through ticket and a detailed airport chronology. The broader JetBlue connection guide covers the one-ticket test.
Direction and booking examples
| Itinerary | Main claim route after a missed connection |
|---|---|
| Paris-JFK-Orlando, one ticket | EU261 can use Orlando final arrival |
| London-Boston-Los Angeles, one ticket | UK261 can use Los Angeles final arrival |
| Dublin-JFK, then separate Fort Lauderdale ticket | EU claim normally ends at JFK |
| Miami-JFK-London, one JetBlue ticket | US-origin; normally no UK261 fixed payment |
| Boston-JFK-European destination | Identify first departure and operator for each ticket |
Do not assume that US preclearance in Dublin changes EU261 departure coverage. Dublin remains an EU departure even though immigration formalities differ.
Record the transfer chronology
Write down:
- actual aircraft door-opening time;
- time released from immigration or preclearance flow;
- baggage collection and recheck, where required;
- security entry and completion;
- terminal or gate movement;
- time assistance was requested;
- replacement booking time;
- final door-opening time at destination.
Airport congestion may become part of the cause analysis. A passenger should proceed promptly and request help when the inbound delay leaves little time. Receipts and phone timestamps can support the account.
Avoid publishing or relying on one universal minimum connection time. It varies with terminals, domestic or international flow, ticketing rules and schedule. The original airline-issued through itinerary is strong evidence that the connection was offered as valid when sold.
Final destination, not JFK or Boston
For a one-booking European or UK origin journey, JFK or Boston is an intermediate point. If Paris-JFK arrives ninety minutes late and the passenger reaches Tampa six hours late, Tampa supplies the statutory delay.
The long-distance amount can start at EUR 600. London-Boston-Seattle can start at GBP 520. A rerouting reduction may halve the amount if final arrival falls within the relevant four-hour window.
Case C-561/20 supports EU261 coverage of a later US domestic sector within a single booking. Keep the Europe-US connection analysis ready if JetBlue says domestic operations can never be covered.
Rebooking options
Ask JetBlue to protect the remaining itinerary as soon as a misconnection becomes likely. After a protected EU or UK disruption, rerouting should be at the earliest opportunity. A suitable partner service can matter where the next JetBlue option is much later.
JetBlue's current US policy also commits to partner rebooking after a controllable cancellation and after qualifying delay thresholds, subject to availability. Its international threshold is six hours for that policy. This does not narrow stronger statutory rerouting rights on a European or UK departure.
Before buying a replacement, show JetBlue the practical option, ask it to rebook and preserve refusal or inaction. Select comparable travel conditions and a proportionate fare.
Hotel, meals and ground transport
A protected overnight connection disruption can require hotel accommodation and transport, plus reasonable meals. The duty of care generally survives extraordinary circumstances.
JetBlue records comparable commitments for eligible controllable US events. A passenger whose trip begins in the US should ask for the available voucher, hotel and transfer assistance. Carrier policy may treat travellers at their home airport differently.
Keep itemised receipts. A ride to a distant preferred hotel or a luxury room can be disputed where a reasonable nearby option existed.
When immigration or security is blamed
The answer depends on causation. If JetBlue delivered the passenger with enough time under the sold itinerary and an exceptional immigration closure caused the miss, fixed compensation may be difficult. If the inbound flight was already late and left an impossible transfer, the airline delay remains central.
Ask whether JetBlue held the connection, provided expedited assistance or offered rerouting before departure. For passengers with booked mobility support, document whether assistance arrived and whether that failure consumed the connection window.
An invalid passport, missing visa or failure to meet entry requirements is normally the passenger's responsibility and can defeat denied-boarding or onward-carriage claims.
US-origin missed connections
Miami-JFK-London beginning in the US does not gain UK261 just because London is final destination and JetBlue operates it. US federal law has no general fixed delay payment. The passenger can still seek rerouting, a refund if the itinerary is cancelled or significantly changed and alternatives are declined, JetBlue controllable-event benefits and proven losses.
For an involuntary bump, US denied-boarding rules may provide cash according to fare and replacement arrival. Label the event correctly.
Claim evidence
Attach the original ticket, all coupons, inbound and replacement boarding passes, baggage tags, airport timeline, messages, final arrival evidence and receipts. State whether the connection was protected and identify the operating carrier that caused the delay.
Checked baggage and family needs should also appear in the chronology. Save the tag and collection time if baggage recheck used the remaining connection window. Keep a replacement boarding pass for every traveller because fixed compensation is calculated individually. If JetBlue separates a child or a passenger needing booked assistance from the original party during rerouting, document the proposal and request a workable same-itinerary option.

FAQ
Does immigration delay automatically remove compensation?
No. The effect depends on the inbound delay, sold connection time, airport event and passenger conduct.
Must JetBlue hold my connection?
Not always. It must handle the protected booking and reroute appropriately when the connection is missed.
Can JFK-to-Orlando be covered by EU261?
Yes, when it is a later sector of one booking that began in the EU and creates a qualifying final delay.
Are separately booked JetBlue flights protected together?
Usually not. Each ticket normally has its own destination and risk allocation.
Can I buy another airline's flight?
Potentially after asking JetBlue for earliest reasonable rerouting and documenting the need, comparable conditions and price.
