JetBlue hotel, meals and transport expense claims

JetBlue passengers can claim reasonable meals, hotel and airport transport when the airline should provide care but does not. EU261 and UK261 duties apply on protected departures even during extraordinary weather. On US itineraries, JetBlue's commitments focus on controllable cancellations and delays and can exclude lodging at the passenger's home airport. Itemised receipts and a record of asking for help are essential.

Check your case in the form

Enter your route, date and type of disruption. We will check whether your case qualifies for a claim under EU 261/2004 or UK261.

What happened to your flight?

Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:

Care reimbursement is separate from EUR or GBP fixed compensation and from ticket refund. The JetBlue delayed-flight guide explains when those other claims arise.

What reasonable care includes

ExpenseWhen it can be reasonableCommon dispute
Meals and non-alcoholic drinksWaiting through normal meal timesLuxury dining or alcohol
Hotel roomNecessary overnight delay or reroutingPremium room when ordinary lodging existed
Airport-hotel transportHotel not walkable or carrier-selectedUnrelated city travel
CommunicationNecessary calls or messagesUnconnected roaming use
Transfer to substitute airportRequired by rerouting or diversionPassenger preference unrelated to disruption

There is no need to go hungry because a voucher desk is closed. Spend proportionately and retain merchant detail.

EU261 and UK261 care

JetBlue must provide care on departures from the EU or UK once the applicable waiting threshold is met. Distance determines the initial threshold; an overnight wait creates hotel and transport duties. The obligation generally continues even where severe weather, ATC restrictions or another extraordinary event removes fixed compensation.

Care lasts while the passenger waits for rerouting at the earliest opportunity. A passenger who chooses reimbursement and abandons the trip normally ends ongoing airline care after that choice. Obtain confirmation of the selected remedy.

Read the JetBlue cancellation guide before choosing refund, because that decision affects continuing carriage but not necessarily care already accrued.

If JetBlue offers a reasonable hotel or meal voucher and the passenger rejects it for personal preference, reimbursement of a more expensive choice can be reduced or refused.

JetBlue's US commitments

The DOT dashboard records JetBlue commitments for controllable cancellations and delays: meals after a qualifying wait, hotel for an overnight disruption and ground transport to and from accommodation. These are carrier commitments rather than a universal federal care statute.

JetBlue's Customer Service Plan currently refers to a USD 12 meal voucher after a controllable cancellation where alternative transportation requires waiting at least three hours. For eligible overnight cases where JetBlue cannot provide hotel directly, it asks passengers to submit valid receipts within ten days.

Weather and ATC events may not satisfy controllability. Ask what practical assistance is offered and check travel insurance. A refund remains available after cancellation if alternatives are declined, regardless of cause.

Home airport and nearby residence

US carrier commitments often exclude hotel where the passenger is at the city of residence. That does not automatically decide an EU261 or UK261 departure, whose statutory care analysis is different.

If returning home is practical, reasonable transport can be less expensive than hotel. Record distance, time, accessibility and whether JetBlue directed the passenger to leave. A family with young children or a passenger needing an accessible room may reasonably require a different solution.

Do not assume a passport address proves current residence. Provide the actual circumstances where relevant.

Ask before paying

At the airport:

  1. request meal, hotel and transport assistance from JetBlue;
  2. photograph the closed desk or save chat if no help is available;
  3. ask whether JetBlue has a contracted hotel;
  4. note the name or case reference;
  5. purchase only necessary, proportionate services;
  6. obtain itemised receipts, not only card slips.

An online hotel confirmation proves booking, while the final folio proves payment and included extras. Keep both. If two passengers share one room, explain the allocation rather than claiming two rooms.

Expenses usually challenged

Alcohol, minibar, entertainment, clothing unrelated to the disruption, luxury upgrades and extra nights after travel becomes available are commonly disputed. A meal receipt for several people should identify the covered passengers.

Transport to a distant preferred hotel can be unreasonable if JetBlue offered comparable nearby lodging. Conversely, accessibility, safety or lack of rooms may justify a higher cost. Document why the choice was necessary at that time.

Lost wages and missed events are not Article 9 care. They may require Montreal Convention proof, insurance or another legal basis.

Claim calculation

Create a table with date, passenger, item, reason, currency and amount. Convert currency only if the claim channel requires it, and show the exchange source. Attach receipts in matching order.

Example: JetBlue cancels Amsterdam-Boston overnight for weather. A couple receives no voucher and pays EUR 146 for an ordinary room, EUR 36 for dinner and EUR 28 for airport transport. Fixed EUR 600 may fail if weather is proved, but EUR 210 reasonable care remains claimable.

Example: New York-London is cancelled for routine maintenance. JetBlue does not provide a hotel to a traveller away from home. Its controllable-event commitment can support reasonable lodging; no UK261 fixed amount arises from the US departure.

Relationship with replacement travel

Do not mix hotel and meal receipts with the fare for a self-purchased replacement flight. Replacement carriage is an Article 8 rerouting or contract/refund issue, while care is Article 9 on a European departure. Separate headings make both easier to decide.

If travel insurance pays a receipt, disclose it and claim only the unrecovered part. Double reimbursement is not allowed.

Submission timing and evidence

JetBlue's plan requests valid overnight expense receipts within ten days for the described US reimbursement route. European statutory rights should still be submitted promptly, even where a longer national limitation period exists. Baggage deadlines are different.

This page reflects policies checked on 14 August 2026. Preserve the terms displayed for the flight date because carrier commitments can change.

FAQ

Does JetBlue owe meals during bad weather?

On a protected EU or UK departure, statutory care generally remains due. US policy can depend on controllability.

Can I book any hotel I want?

Choose a reasonable available option. Luxury or distant lodging can be reduced where a practical ordinary room existed.

Is a bank statement enough?

Usually not by itself. Keep the itemised merchant receipt showing what was purchased.

Can care costs be added to EUR 600?

Yes, when fixed compensation and reasonable unreimbursed care are independently due.

How soon should US overnight receipts be sent?

JetBlue's current plan asks for valid receipts within ten days where eligible direct hotel assistance was unavailable.
