JetBlue flight compensation: EU261, UK261 and US passenger rights

JetBlue compensation depends first on where the protected journey began, not on the airline logo or the airport where the problem occurred. A JetBlue-operated trip departing the EU can fall under EU261 and may pay EUR 250, EUR 400 or EUR 600. A journey leaving the United Kingdom can attract GBP 220, GBP 350 or GBP 520 under UK261. A standalone JetBlue flight from the United States to Europe normally does not receive those fixed European amounts, although US refund rules and JetBlue's own Customer Bill of Rights may still help.

What happened to your flight?

Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:

Use the flight compensation calculator after identifying the complete booking. The strongest JetBlue claims usually start in Europe or the UK, continue on one ticket and reach the final destination at least three hours late, unless a qualifying cancellation or involuntary denied boarding applies.

The same aircraft may therefore produce different rights in opposite directions. JetBlue is a US carrier, not an EU or UK carrier. EU261 and UK261 cover its departures from their respective territories, but generally not its inbound flights that start elsewhere.

What events can produce money

Arrival delay

For an EU261 or UK261 delay claim, measure lateness at the final destination shown on the continuous reservation. Departure delay is relevant for care, but the fixed sum normally requires arrival at least three hours late. The legal arrival time is generally when at least one aircraft door opens and passengers are permitted to leave.

The airline may avoid fixed compensation if it proves an extraordinary circumstance and reasonable measures. Weather and air traffic restrictions can qualify; ordinary operational planning or many routine technical defects generally do not. Read the focused JetBlue delay guide.

Cancellation

A cancellation can create a choice between reimbursement and rerouting, assistance during the wait and a separate fixed payment. Under EU261 and UK261, notice at least 14 days in advance usually removes the fixed cancellation amount, while shorter notice requires examination of the replacement schedule and cause. A US cancellation still carries a refund right when the passenger rejects the offered alternative, even where no European fixed sum applies.

Denied boarding

Involuntary denied boarding has its own rules. European and UK systems use their distance bands. US oversales rules use arrival-delay percentages and statutory caps. Do not accept a volunteer offer until its restrictions, expiry and effect on other rights are clear.

Downgrade, care and baggage

A cabin downgrade, reasonable hotel or meal expense and baggage loss are not substitutes for delay compensation. They are separate heads of claim. One disruption can support more than one remedy when each test is satisfied, but the same expense cannot be recovered twice.

How much could JetBlue owe?

FrameworkMain fixed bandsTypical trigger

UK261GBP 220 / GBP 350 / GBP 520Covered delay, cancellation or denied boarding

JetBlue Customer Bill of RightsEvent-specific points or contractual benefitsControllable event satisfying JetBlue's conditions

Distance, route scope, arrival timing and the replacement offered all matter. A long transatlantic route can reach EUR 600 or GBP 520, but an airline may reduce the long-distance amount by half when rerouting arrives within the statutory reduction window. Calculate entitlement per eligible passenger rather than per reservation.

JetBlue's Customer Bill of Rights is a contractual program, not another name for EU261. Its current delay and cancellation benefits depend on controllability and specific time bands. Beginning in early 2026, JetBlue says qualifying Bill of Rights compensation is issued as TrueBlue points and requires the TrueBlue account to be attached to the reservation before departure. Never convert those points into a promised cash amount without the terms of the actual award.

One booking can extend the protected journey

Suppose a passenger books Dublin-New York-Orlando in one transaction and JetBlue operates the journey. If a disruption after New York causes arrival in Orlando four hours late, EU261 can remain relevant because the journey began in the EU and the final destination is Orlando. The Court of Justice confirmed in case C-561/20 that a connecting journey booked as a whole may remain protected even where the later flight is wholly outside the EU.

Separate tickets can change the answer. If Dublin-New York and New York-Orlando were independent reservations, the final destination of the first contract may be New York. The second ticket then needs its own analysis. A self-transfer label, separate booking references and the need to collect luggage are important warning signs.

Operating carrier identity also matters. A ticket marketed by JetBlue may include a partner-operated flight. EU261 and UK261 claims are generally directed to the airline that actually operated, intended to operate or denied boarding for the affected service. Keep the original itinerary because a later app display may hide the operated-by line.

Build a claim that can be decided

Keep a compact evidence file containing:

  • the booking confirmation, e-ticket receipt and all ticketed sectors;
  • boarding passes and the name of the operating carrier;
  • scheduled and actual arrival at the final destination;
  • cancellation notice or denied-boarding document;
  • JetBlue messages, rebooking offers and stated reason;
  • itemised receipts for meals, hotel, local transport or replacement travel;
  • proof that a TrueBlue account was attached before departure if claiming that benefit;
  • authority from other adults if one person submits for a group.

Send separate, clearly labelled requests where necessary. A statutory fixed-payment claim, a DOT refund, a baggage file and a Customer Bill of Rights benefit do not always use the same channel. State the journey direction, one-booking status, operating carrier, event, timing, requested remedy and attachments. Avoid merely saying that the flight was late.

If the response cites weather or air traffic control without specifics, ask what event affected this aircraft, at what time and what reasonable measures were attempted. If JetBlue rejects a US-origin flight for EU261 purposes, that may be correct; examine US refund rights and the carrier's own commitments rather than repeating an inapplicable European demand.

Current rules and the EU reform

This guide states the position checked on 14 August 2026. The EU reform adopted in July 2026 is not treated here as already applicable. Its future submission deadlines and response periods should not be mixed with current claim-limitation rules, which can depend on the forum. Apply the law in force on the relevant date.

FAQ

Does every JetBlue transatlantic flight qualify for EU261?

No. A JetBlue-operated departure from the EU can qualify, while a separate US-to-EU journey normally cannot because JetBlue is not an EU carrier.

Can a JetBlue flight from London pay GBP 520?

Yes, a covered long-distance UK departure may pay GBP 520 after a qualifying disruption, subject to rerouting reductions and available defences.

Is a refund the same as compensation?

No. A refund returns money for unused transportation; fixed compensation addresses qualifying inconvenience. Care expenses and baggage loss are separate again.

Who pays when another airline operates the flight?

For EU261 and UK261, the claim generally follows the operating carrier. The marketing airline may still handle ticket refunds or agency functions.

Can children receive the same fixed amount?

An eligible child travelling on a paid ticket is normally assessed per passenger. A lap infant travelling free may need a closer ticket and fare analysis.
