JetBlue five-hour delay: take a refund or continue travelling?
After a JetBlue departure covered by EU261 or UK261 is delayed at least five hours, the passenger may abandon the trip and request reimbursement instead of travelling. If the journey still has value, the passenger can continue, retain care rights and later test fixed compensation using final arrival. A US-origin international trip uses a different DOT significant-change threshold, normally six hours rather than five.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:
Do not cancel voluntarily before preserving JetBlue's delay notice and deciding which remedy fits. The JetBlue cancellation guide explains the related choice when the service no longer operates.
The five-hour choice on an EU or UK departure
When delay reaches five hours, reimbursement can cover the unused ticket. It can also include already-flown sectors if the journey no longer serves the passenger's original travel purpose, together with a return flight to the first departure point at the earliest opportunity where relevant.
Consider Paris-New York-Los Angeles for a two-day business meeting. JetBlue's Paris departure is delayed overnight and the meeting will be over before arrival. Reimbursement may extend beyond the unused transatlantic sector if the passenger proves the completed portion no longer serves the plan. A holiday traveller who still wants the trip may instead accept rerouting and claim appropriate assistance.
| Passenger decision | Ticket consequence | Other possible rights |
|---|---|---|
| Abandon before departure | Reimbursement of unused transportation | Care while waiting; possible fixed compensation |
| Return to first departure point | Refund of the now-useless journey plus return transport | Possible fixed compensation |
| Continue on delayed flight | No refund for transportation used | Care and possible arrival-delay compensation |
| Accept voluntary credit | Governed by credit terms | Check whether statutory refund was waived knowingly |
The choice affects carriage, not automatically fixed compensation. A passenger may receive a refund and a statutory fixed amount after the same qualifying disruption because they address different matters.
Five hours is not the fixed-payment threshold
EU261 and UK261 fixed delay compensation normally begins at three hours late at final arrival, not five hours at departure. Five hours creates the reimbursement option. A passenger who waits six hours but arrives only two hours late after a replacement flight may have had a refund option before travel, yet not qualify for fixed arrival-delay compensation after taking the trip.
Conversely, a two-hour initial delay that causes a missed connection can lead to final arrival five hours late and a fixed claim even though the first airport wait never reached five hours.
Use the three-hour clock guide to keep those tests separate.
US international travel uses six hours
DOT refund rules define a significant international itinerary change to include departure or arrival at least six hours earlier or later. Other triggers include a different origin or destination airport, extra connection, downgrade or an itinerary change that creates a misconnection. A cancellation independently supports the refund choice.
When a significant change occurs and the passenger rejects alternative transportation, credit or another form of compensation, the airline must provide an automatic refund. The deadline is seven business days for credit-card purchases and twenty calendar days for other payments.
JetBlue's help page uses the same six-hour international threshold when describing significant schedule changes. It may offer rebooking within five days, another JetBlue flight or an eligible partner option. A passenger travelling from New York to London should therefore not cite the European five-hour rule; the journey direction points instead to US rules and JetBlue's policy.
Care while deciding
On a protected EU or UK departure, waiting passengers should receive meals and refreshments proportionate to the delay, communication and, when necessary, hotel accommodation with airport transport. Assistance remains relevant even if severe weather removes the fixed amount.
Ask JetBlue for vouchers before paying personally. If no practical help appears, choose reasonable essentials and keep itemised receipts. The claim should state why the purchase was necessary, particularly if the passenger lives near the departure airport or chose a hotel far away.
For a controllable US delay, JetBlue's recorded commitments include meal assistance after a qualifying wait and overnight accommodation and transport for eligible passengers. JetBlue's own delay-benefit bands also begin at three hours and rise with duration. Those contractual benefits do not turn five hours into a federal cash-compensation rule.
What happens to return and connecting flights?
Do not assume that requesting a refund for one sector leaves every other sector active. Ask JetBlue to confirm the status of the entire reservation. Airline systems can cancel remaining segments after a no-show or itinerary change.
If only the outbound trip has lost its purpose, explain whether the return also becomes useless. For a continuous journey, Article 8 reimbursement under EU261 can cover parts already made when they no longer serve the original plan. Evidence such as event dates, accommodation bookings and a short trip duration helps.
Separate tickets require separate handling. Abandoning the JetBlue ticket does not automatically refund an independently booked train, hotel or another airline. Those losses may depend on flexible terms, travel insurance or provable damages under another legal basis.
A careful decision sequence
- Save the original itinerary and every JetBlue delay update.
- Confirm whether all flights are on one ticket and which journey direction is protected.
- Ask for the current expected departure and offered replacement.
- Decide whether the journey still serves its documented purpose.
- If abandoning, request statutory reimbursement rather than clicking a generic voluntary cancellation.
- Obtain written confirmation that the appropriate remaining sectors are cancelled or preserved.
- Keep receipts and calculate any fixed claim separately after the event.
When requesting money, identify the unused fare, taxes and ancillary services that were not provided. Do not subtract a fixed compensation amount from the refund. If JetBlue offers points or credit, retain a screenshot of validity and restrictions before deciding.
Example: London to New York
A family of three has a JetBlue London-New York flight delayed seven hours because of an ordinary aircraft defect. They abandon a four-day trip before departure. UK261 can support reimbursement and potentially GBP 520 per eligible passenger if the cause does not qualify as extraordinary. Reasonable meals during the airport wait are a separate request.
If the same family travels New York-London, UK261 normally does not cover JetBlue's US departure. A seven-hour schedule shift can nevertheless satisfy the US international significant-change threshold, allowing a refund if alternatives are declined.
This guide reflects rules checked on 14 August 2026. Future EU reform deadlines are not applied as present law.
FAQ
Must I wait five hours before taking a refund after cancellation?
No. Cancellation creates its own refund or rerouting choice. Five hours is relevant to a flight that remains delayed.
Can I travel and also refund the same flight?
No. Transportation used is not unused fare, although fixed compensation and care costs may still be due.
Is the US international threshold five or six hours?
Current DOT significant-change rules use six hours for international departure or arrival changes and three hours for domestic journeys.
Can completed sectors be reimbursed?
Potentially under EU261 or UK261 when the journey no longer serves its original purpose, with a return to the first departure point where necessary.
Does bad weather remove the five-hour refund choice?
No. Extraordinary circumstances can affect fixed compensation, but do not normally remove the statutory reimbursement option on a covered journey.
