Etihad Airways: cash refund, voucher or rerouting — choosing correctly

When Etihad presents you with a resolution after a cancellation, it can be tempting to accept whatever is offered first. Three genuinely different options usually sit behind that offer, and picking the wrong one for your situation can leave real value on the table.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:

Cash refund: your strongest, unconditional right

A full cash refund of the unused portion of your ticket is the default right the regulation gives you after a qualifying cancellation. It must be paid within seven days of your request, in cash, by bank transfer, by cheque, or — only if you specifically agree to it — as a travel voucher instead. Etihad cannot substitute a voucher for cash without your explicit, informed consent.

Voucher: only ever with your agreement

A voucher can be a reasonable choice if you are confident you will fly with Etihad again soon and the voucher's terms are genuinely favourable, but it is never something Etihad can impose on you as a default. If a voucher is applied to your account without you actively choosing it, you retain the right to ask for it to be converted back to a cash refund instead.

Rerouting: a genuinely separate third option

Rerouting to your destination — either as soon as possible or on a later date more convenient for you — is a distinct choice from both a cash refund and a voucher. It is not automatically better or worse than the other two; it depends entirely on whether reaching your destination is still the actual goal of your trip, or whether the circumstances that led to the cancellation have made the whole journey pointless.

Why the choice genuinely matters

A rushed rerouting onto a poor connection, accepted simply because it was the first thing offered, can leave you considerably worse off than taking the time to request a cash refund and making your own alternative arrangements instead. Conversely, refusing a perfectly workable rerouting purely out of frustration, when reaching your destination is still what you actually need, is not necessarily the better choice either. Assess your own situation before deciding, rather than accepting the first option presented by default.

What if you already accepted a voucher you didn't really want?

Contact Etihad, explain that you would prefer a cash refund, and reference your right to choose refund over voucher unless you gave clear, informed consent to the voucher specifically. Many cases of an automatically applied voucher can still be converted back to cash if you act reasonably promptly and make the request clearly.

Does this choice affect a separate fixed compensation claim?

No. The choice between refund, voucher and rerouting concerns only the value of your original ticket. Any separate fixed compensation you may be owed for the cancellation itself, based on notice given and cause, is assessed independently and is unaffected by which of these three options you select.

A worked example

Etihad cancels a flight and automatically credits the ticket value as a travel voucher without asking the passenger's preference first. The passenger, who does not plan to fly with Etihad again soon, contacts customer service and requests the amount be paid out in cash instead, citing the statutory right to choose. Etihad processes the conversion, and the passenger separately still pursues fixed compensation for the underlying cancellation, since that claim is unaffected by which of the three options for the ticket value was ultimately chosen.

FAQ

Can Etihad give me a voucher instead of a cash refund without asking?

No, not without your explicit agreement. You retain the right to request cash instead.

Is rerouting always the best option after a cancellation?

Not necessarily. It depends on whether reaching your destination is still your actual goal, versus preferring a refund if the trip's purpose has been undermined.

How long does a cash refund take once requested?

Generally within seven days of your request, under the applicable regulation.

Can I convert an already-accepted voucher back into cash?

Often yes, particularly if you did not actively and knowingly choose the voucher in the first place. Contact Etihad promptly to request the conversion.

Does choosing a refund instead of rerouting affect my separate compensation claim?

No, these are assessed independently of each other.

What if part of your journey was already used?

If you already completed part of your itinerary before a later leg was cancelled, the refund applies to the unused portion of the ticket, and you can additionally request return transport to your original point of departure if you choose not to continue the remainder of the trip at all.

Does the ticket type you booked affect these options?

No. Whether you booked a discounted promotional fare or a fully flexible ticket, the same choice between refund, voucher and rerouting applies once a qualifying cancellation occurs, based on the price you actually paid for your ticket.

What if you booked through a travel agent or a third-party platform?

The choice between refund, voucher and rerouting is still your right, even if a third party handled the original booking. In practice, a refund on a third-party booking sometimes needs to be processed through that platform rather than directly by Etihad, which can take somewhat longer, but the underlying entitlement remains unchanged.

A final consideration: don't let convenience decide alone

An offer that arrives first, or that requires the least effort to accept, is not necessarily the one that best serves your interests. Take a moment to genuinely compare the three options against your actual circumstances before confirming a choice you may not be able to easily reverse afterward.

What if you need to decide quickly, at the airport, under pressure?

Airport staff sometimes present the choice verbally and expect a fast answer while a queue is forming behind you. If you are not sure which option suits your situation, it is reasonable to ask for a written note of what was offered and to confirm your decision by email shortly afterward, rather than being rushed into a final choice you have not had time to properly consider.

A note on partial rerouting offers

Occasionally Etihad offers a rerouting that only covers part of your original itinerary, leaving a gap you would need to fill yourself. Treat this as materially different from a genuine full rerouting, and weigh a cash refund against it carefully, since a partial offer does not carry the same value as reaching your final destination as originally booked.
