Etihad Airways diverted flight: your rights when you land somewhere else
Landing at an airport other than the one you booked is not a problem you have to solve yourself. The regulation places a specific obligation directly on the airline to get you to where you were actually supposed to go, at no additional cost to you.

When a flight counts as diverted
A flight is diverted when, for an operational reason — weather, a technical issue, an emergency — it lands at an airport different from the one on your original booking. This is distinct from a simple delay or cancellation, since the aircraft did complete a landing, just not at your intended destination.
Etihad's obligation to get you the rest of the way
Where the airport you actually land at serves the same city, urban area or region as your original destination, Etihad must arrange your onward transport to the originally booked airport, or to another nearby point you agree to, at its own expense. This is not a favour or a discretionary gesture — it is a specific, direct obligation under the regulation.
Does a diversion automatically trigger fixed compensation too?
Not automatically. Whether fixed compensation is also owed depends on the cause of the diversion and your total delay in actually reaching your real destination, following the same rules that apply to an ordinary delay. A diversion caused by a genuinely extraordinary event may not trigger fixed compensation, but the obligation to get you the rest of the way at no cost to you applies regardless of the cause.
What if the diversion airport is far from your original destination?
The obligation to arrange onward transport still applies even if the alternate airport is a considerable distance from your original destination, though the practical logistics naturally become more complex, and your eventual total delay is likely to be correspondingly larger. The further the diversion airport sits from your intended destination, the more likely your total delay is to clear the three-hour threshold for fixed compensation as well.
What if Etihad does not arrange this promptly?
If Etihad does not arrange reasonable onward transport within a reasonable time, you may in some circumstances be able to arrange your own transport and later seek reimbursement of the reasonable, documented cost. Keep every receipt and a clear record of exactly what you asked for and when, since this will matter if you need to recover those costs afterward.
Care during a diversion
Regardless of how the diversion is ultimately resolved, you are entitled to reasonable meals, refreshments and, if an overnight stay becomes necessary, hotel accommodation while you wait at the diversion airport for onward transport. This obligation does not depend on the cause of the diversion.
A worked example
An Etihad flight bound for Milan Malpensa diverts to Milan Linate because of severe weather. Etihad must arrange transport from Linate to Malpensa, or to another point you agree is acceptable, at its own cost. If the total delay to your actual arrival at your intended final destination clears three hours, you may also have a separate fixed compensation claim, depending on whether the weather event meets the bar for a genuine extraordinary circumstance.
FAQ
Do I have to pay for transport from a diversion airport to my original destination?
No. Etihad must arrange and pay for this itself, provided the diversion airport serves the same city or region as your original destination.
Does a diversion automatically mean I get fixed compensation too?
Not automatically. That depends on your total delay and the cause of the diversion, following the ordinary delay rules separately from the transport obligation.
What if Etihad doesn't arrange onward transport quickly enough?
You may be able to arrange your own transport and seek reimbursement of reasonable, documented costs afterward.
Am I owed meals or a hotel while waiting at the diversion airport?
Yes, this right applies regardless of the cause of the diversion or how the compensation question is ultimately resolved.
Does it matter how far the diversion airport is from my original destination?
The transport obligation still applies regardless of distance, though a greater distance typically means a longer total delay, which is relevant to a separate fixed compensation claim.
What if you decide not to continue to your original destination?
If a diversion leaves you somewhere you would rather not continue from, you can generally decline the onward transport Etihad offers and make your own arrangements instead, though this may affect your ability to later seek reimbursement for the transport obligation specifically, since you chose not to use what was offered. Weigh this decision carefully against simply accepting the arranged onward transport to your original destination.
Diversions affecting connecting itineraries
If your diverted flight was meant to connect to a further onward journey, the diversion's knock-on effect on that connection is assessed the same way as any other missed-connection scenario, based on your total delay to your actual final destination on a single continuous booking.
Baggage after a diversion
If your checked baggage does not travel with you from the diversion airport to your actual final destination, that is treated as a separate baggage issue under the Montreal Convention rather than as part of the diversion transport obligation itself. Report it at your final arrival airport in the usual way if it does not arrive alongside you.
A quick reference for what a diversion does and doesn't guarantee
A diversion guarantees free onward transport to your original destination and care during the wait. It does not automatically guarantee fixed compensation, which depends separately on your total delay and the cause. Keep these two obligations distinct when assessing what you are actually owed.
Documenting the diversion itself
Note the actual airport you landed at, the time you landed, and any announcement made about the reason for the diversion. This information is useful both for a potential fixed compensation claim and for confirming that Etihad's onward transport obligation was properly triggered in the first place.
A final consideration for onward international travel
If your original destination and the diversion airport sit in different countries, ask specifically about visa or immigration requirements for the transfer, since these can add complexity beyond the basic transport arrangement itself.
Should you accept the very first onward option offered?
Not necessarily. If a faster or more convenient onward option genuinely exists, it is worth asking directly rather than accepting the first proposal without question, much as with any other rerouting situation.
