Etihad Airways downgrade: Business Studio or First Apartment refund

Boarding to find your Business Studio seat has become an Economy one, or your First Apartment has become a Business Studio, triggers a specific, calculable right to a partial refund. The percentage owed is fixed by the regulation itself and does not depend on why the downgrade happened.

What happened to your flight?

Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:

The three fixed percentages

A downgrade on the affected sector entitles you to 30% of the ticket price for that sector on a journey up to 1,500 kilometres, 50% for a journey between 1,500 and 3,500 kilometres or any longer intra-EU flight, and 75% for a journey over 3,500 kilometres. These percentages apply regardless of the reason Etihad gives for the downgrade.

Why the cause doesn't matter here

Unlike fixed compensation for a delay or cancellation, where an extraordinary-circumstances defence can excuse the payment entirely, the downgrade refund has no equivalent exception. Whether you were downgraded because of an aircraft swap, overbooking in the higher cabin, or a mechanical issue with specific seats, the same fixed percentage applies without any cause-based reduction.

Calculated on the affected sector, not the whole journey

If your itinerary includes multiple legs and the downgrade affected only one of them, the percentage is calculated against the portion of the total fare attributable to that specific sector, not against the full ticket price for your entire trip. A downgrade on a short connecting leg within a longer journey is refunded based on that leg's own value, which is often a smaller figure than the headline ticket price might suggest.

From First Apartments to Business Studio, or Business Studio to Economy

The same percentages apply regardless of which specific cabin change occurred — a drop from First Apartments to Business Studio uses the same distance-based bands as a drop from Business Studio to standard Economy. What matters for the calculation is the distance of the affected sector, not how many cabin tiers you were moved down by.

What if you were downgraded on an award ticket?

The same downgrade rights apply to a ticket booked with Etihad Guest miles, though the practical calculation of a percentage refund can be more complex when the original fare was paid partly or entirely in miles rather than cash. Ask Etihad directly how the applicable value is calculated for an award booking specifically, since this is not always immediately obvious from a points-based fare.

Requesting the refund

Submit a written claim identifying your booking reference, the flight number, the class you originally booked, and the class you actually travelled in, supported by your boarding pass as evidence of the class you actually flew. Do not assume the refund will be processed automatically — request it explicitly, since airlines do not always initiate this proactively even when a downgrade clearly occurred.

Does a downgrade also affect a separate compensation claim?

Not automatically, but if the same disruption that caused your downgrade also produced a qualifying delay or cancellation elsewhere in your journey, that would be assessed as a separate, additional claim under the ordinary delay or cancellation rules, alongside the downgrade refund itself.

A worked example

A passenger books a Business Studio seat for a Frankfurt–Abu Dhabi flight, a journey of roughly 4,800 kilometres, but is downgraded to Economy at boarding because of a last-minute aircraft change. Since the journey exceeds 3,500 kilometres, the passenger is entitled to 75% of the Business Studio fare paid for that specific sector, regardless of why the aircraft change occurred.

FAQ

Does the reason for my downgrade affect the refund percentage?

No, the same fixed percentages apply regardless of the cause, unlike fixed compensation for delays and cancellations.

How is the refund calculated on a multi-leg journey?

Based on the fare attributable to the specific sector where the downgrade occurred, not your entire ticket price.

Do I get more back if I was downgraded from First Apartments rather than Business Studio?

The percentage itself depends on distance, not how many cabin tiers you dropped, though the underlying fare difference for a First Apartments downgrade is often larger in absolute terms.

Does an award ticket booked with miles qualify for the same refund?

Yes, though the practical calculation can be more complex for a points-based fare. Ask Etihad how they calculate the applicable value.

Is the downgrade refund processed automatically?

Not necessarily. Submit a written claim with your boarding pass as evidence, rather than assuming it will happen without a request.

What if you were upgraded instead of downgraded?

A free upgrade to a higher cabin than originally booked is not a downgrade and does not trigger any refund obligation in the other direction. This right only ever runs one way, in favour of a passenger who received less than they paid for, not the reverse.

Group bookings and downgrades

Where multiple passengers on the same booking are all downgraded together, each qualifying passenger is entitled to the applicable percentage individually, calculated against their own portion of the fare, rather than being combined into a single household figure.

How long do you have to claim a downgrade refund?

The regulation itself does not specify a distinct deadline for this particular claim, so it generally follows the same national limitation rules that apply to other EU261 claims, which vary by the country your journey departed from. As with any claim, submitting it as soon as reasonably possible after the disruption is the safest approach rather than waiting.

A final practical note

Screenshot or save your original seat and cabin selection at the time of booking, if you have access to it, alongside your boarding pass showing the actual cabin flown. Having both pieces of evidence together removes any ambiguity about what you originally booked versus what you actually received.

Downgrade on the return leg of a round trip

If only your return leg is downgraded while the outbound flight was flown as booked, the refund is calculated purely against the return leg's own portion of the total fare, not the round trip as a whole.

What if Etihad disputes that a downgrade actually happened?

Occasionally an airline argues that a seat change was a like-for-like adjustment rather than a genuine downgrade — for instance, moving you between two configurations it considers broadly equivalent. Your boarding pass, the cabin code printed on it, and your original booking confirmation together settle this dispute quickly in most cases, since both documents record the class of service in an unambiguous, standardised code that leaves little room for reinterpretation after the fact.
