Brussels Airlines cancelled flight: refund, rerouting and compensation
Short answer: when Brussels Airlines cancels a flight, it must offer a choice between reimbursement and rerouting. It may also owe EUR 250, EUR 400 or EUR 600 per passenger when notice was too late and no extraordinary circumstance excuses the cancellation. The transport choice, care expenses and fixed payment are separate; accepting a replacement does not automatically surrender compensation.

What happened to your flight?
Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.
Choose the situation that applies to your flight:
Do not press the refund button merely because it appears first in the app. A cash refund can be right when the journey has lost its purpose, but a passenger who still needs to reach the destination may obtain more value from rerouting at the earliest opportunity.
Your immediate Article 8 choice
| Option | What it means | When it often fits |
|---|---|---|
| Reimbursement | Refund of unused travel, and used sectors that no longer serve the original plan | Trip is abandoned |
| Earliest rerouting | Alternative transport under comparable conditions as soon as reasonably possible | Destination is still needed now |
| Later rerouting | Travel on another suitable date, subject to seat availability | Passenger prefers to postpone |
Where the journey has already begun and has become pointless, reimbursement can include a return flight to the initial point of departure. Explain the lost purpose with concrete facts, such as a missed one-off event or an itinerary whose remaining sectors no longer have value.
Brussels Airlines says it normally rebooks passengers automatically after short-notice cancellation and allows alternatives through its Chat Assistant. Screenshot the proposed itinerary before changing it. An automatic route with an overnight wait or a materially lower cabin is not necessarily the only reasonable option.
Fixed compensation is a second test
The airline can avoid the fixed sum by proving one of the statutory notice-and-rerouting combinations or unavoidable extraordinary circumstances.
| When notice reached the passenger | Compensation can be avoided if the alternative stays within |
|---|---|
| At least 14 days before departure | No fixed payment based on short notice |
| Between 7 and 14 days | Departure no more than 2 hours early and arrival less than 4 hours late |
| Less than 7 days | Departure no more than 1 hour early and arrival less than 2 hours late |
The date when the airline sent a message is not always the date when the passenger was informed. If an agent or online travel site held outdated contact details, preserve evidence showing when the notice actually became accessible. The operating airline carries the burden of proving timely information, although an intermediary may create a separate contractual dispute.
How much may be due?
EU261 uses EUR 250 for journeys up to 1,500 km, EUR 400 for intra-EU journeys over 1,500 km and other journeys from 1,500 to 3,500 km, and EUR 600 for other journeys over 3,500 km. A rerouted arrival inside statutory limits can permit a 50 percent reduction.
Example: Brussels Airlines cancels a BRU–African long-haul service two days before travel and offers a route arriving six hours late. If the airline cannot prove extraordinary circumstances, the standard band can be EUR 600 per eligible passenger. A family of four assesses four claims, not one payment per booking.
For a short European route, the likely band may be EUR 250. Use the amount page rather than guessing from ticket price.
What counts as cancellation?
Removing the booked flight number from operation is the clearest case. A flight brought forward by more than one hour is also treated as cancellation under Court of Justice case law. A landing at a different airport can amount to cancellation unless that airport serves the same town or region and onward transport is provided, with the facts then potentially producing a delay claim.
A major timetable change communicated well in advance may still create reimbursement or contract rights even when the fixed short-notice payment is unavailable. The schedule-change guide separates those outcomes.
Extraordinary cause does not remove transport and care
Brussels Airlines may resist the fixed amount if a severe storm closes Brussels Airport, authorities impose a security restriction, or air-traffic control cancels capacity. It must prove the particular event and reasonable measures. Generic “operational reasons,” normal technical maintenance, crew planning and commercial network decisions do not establish the defence by themselves.
Even a proven extraordinary event leaves Article 8 transport rights and Article 9 care intact. During a necessary wait, reasonable meals, hotel accommodation and airport–hotel transfer remain the airline's responsibility. Keep itemised receipts when no adequate assistance is supplied.
Earliest rerouting and self-booking
EU261 does not limit rerouting to Brussels Airlines' own next service. Comparable transport on another carrier may be relevant when it materially reduces the wait and seats are genuinely available. Ask the airline in writing or through a recorded service channel, propose a specific reasonable option and preserve its response.
Self-booking without giving the carrier a realistic opportunity to help carries risk. It is strongest when the airline offers no timely route, refuses a concrete comparable option, or is unreachable while the alternative is disappearing. Avoid premium extravagance unless the original cabin and availability justify it. The alternative-transport guide provides an evidence sequence.
Cash, voucher and card refund
Current EU261 requires reimbursement within seven days when that option is chosen. A voucher needs the passenger's free and informed agreement; it should not replace cash by default. Record the amount, expiry, transferability and effect on other claims before accepting credit.
The adopted 2026 reform provides future procedural changes, but it was not applicable on 12 August 2026. Do not substitute future deadlines for the current refund rule.
If the booking was made through an agent, identify the merchant of record and distinguish ticket-money processing from Brussels Airlines' responsibility for compensation and rerouting. The operator cannot direct every passenger-rights issue to the seller simply because the seller collected payment.
Evidence and claim wording
Retain the cancellation notice, original itinerary, replacement choices shown in the app, boarding passes for any rerouting and actual final arrival. Save communications with the airline or agent, itemised care receipts and proof of payment for replacement transport.
In the request, state each remedy separately: chosen Article 8 option, fixed compensation amount, and care or alternative-transport expenses. Identify the airline that actually operated or was to operate the cancelled flight. Include every passenger and bank details, then preserve the form confirmation.
If Brussels Airlines refuses, ask it to specify the notice evidence, alternative timings, exact cause and reasonable measures. Its current Conditions of Carriage specify a one-year period for EU261 actions under Belgian law, so unresolved correspondence must not be allowed to consume the deadline.
FAQ
Must I accept the automatic Brussels Airlines replacement?
No. You may request earliest rerouting under comparable conditions or reimbursement, and in suitable cases travel later. Compare the proposed arrival and cabin before confirming.
Can I take rerouting and still seek EUR 250-600?
Yes. The transport remedy and fixed payment are separate. Alternative timings can reduce or remove compensation only within the statutory rules.
Does a cancellation caused by weather still require a hotel?
Yes, when an overnight wait is necessary. Extraordinary circumstances can affect the fixed sum but do not erase reasonable care.
Is a flight moved two hours earlier a cancellation?
Court of Justice case law treats a flight brought forward by more than one hour as cancelled for EU261 purposes. Notice and replacement timing still matter.
Can Brussels Airlines force me to accept a voucher?
No. Credit requires free agreement. When reimbursement is due and chosen, cash remains the baseline remedy under the current Regulation.
